Here is a good article about Jack Kelly LB'er

Hahaha… the small private high school you taught at. I know you weren’t born yesterday, why are you acting like it?

You are going to compare the talent at Oaks Christian with Santa Paula?
Want to try again?

I left SB in 1998. They were just getting started. So yes, it was still in a small league.

Floyd, thanks for your insight. My son was recruited as a WR and played in college until a broken leg didn’t heal quite right. He was a great player from day 1 in 3rd grade and never went to a camp except at our school (he had a full time summer job in construction all through high school). The only reason Marcus got noticed by scouts early (his sophomore season playing for a 6A school on a really good team) was because some scouts came to see a few of his upperclassmen teammates but Marcus happened to have a great game that night and all of a sudden started getting 10 letters a week from schools all over the place. Those scouts were not watching bad teams or small schools that night-they were watching a good team from a big school. So my actual personal experience is entirely consistent with what you are saying.

Jerry Rice came from where again???
It’s obvious that if scouts are out to see certain players, they may see others they are interested in that looked good. But, that’s not the question.
The question is what about good players in small schools? If you are good, alumni’s from various colleges will make contact with their colleges. Also, for decades now, sports agents are a big thing with this. Those just getting started tend to look for potential players in small schools. I knew a couple of them here. That’s how they got started.

Classic and hilarious reply…

You just don’t get it a lot of the time. You don’t understand WHY there is a disparity do you? Hence you can’t figure out WHY a school like SP doesn’t get scholarship athletes. You started out good by talking about comparing talent but you stopped short of understanding why and that was obvious in your comment about St. Bonaventure…

I can’t have a discussion about it if you can’t understand simple, basic reasoning.

And your point is?

Nordhoff beat Oaks Christian regularly in the “just getting started years”. I remember the Strong kid running all over them in the rain one year. He was clearly the best player on the field in that game. Did players at Oaks Christian that year get scholarships? Absolutely. It was all about the money, the connections and the nepotism.

BYU asked him to play on their RUGBY team, after he arrived in Provo a couple years later, because he was strong and fast. He declined. Money, nepotism and connections…

Things haven’t changed much.

First, Jerry Rice only played 2 years in high school. the high school was pretty small and Jerry was not very good.

second, he didn’t get any offers from the major colleges.

third, he ended up going to Mississippi Valley which was like Portland or Weber state schools, mostly because it was close.

he developed his unproven talents and skills there to become the schools best receiver ever and which got him to be the 16th pick in the draft.

so thanks for proving my orignal thought about Kelly not being recruited because of the school he went too.

Wait a minute…Rice went to a not so good school and was able to greatly improve his talent. Obviously someone there got a call to take a look at Rice in high school. And, the coach saw something in Rice that said this kid has a huge upside to his skills. This proves my point that even a small school can and will produce players that have potential.

I remember Lorenzo Booker running all over great teams too. SB was a small school then. How did he end up at Florida State being recruited by Notre Dame, USC and Washington and a lot of other schools? I know he had an agent. It was Bill’s son working to sign him. He proved to his that he could get his name recognition out there. And, Darin was just getting started as a sports agent. Booker ended up in the NFL. And, that’s when ST. Bonny got on the map. Sad that Darin died the night before he was to sign Lorenzo. Lorenzo’s freshman year was my last year at Bonny.
So, who did he know? There were people at Bonny that knew people in colleges. Alumni as I’ve been saying all along. Also, sports agents who are local as well.

You cherry picked Jerry Rice. He is an anomaly from a long time ago. It’s more rare today than it has ever been.

Nonsense. Where did you hear all this from? I knew the family very well. This was not a thing.

Stop making up stories. Your information is weak, your notion is weak, it’s all TRUMPed up stuff.

I heard it from Darin before he died. He was trying to get me to be an investor for Lorenzo. Right After Darin died, Bill told me that the signing papers were on his table at Bill’s home the morning he died. Find Booker and ask him. He lives in Camarillo. (805)512-1294

read his life story, it showds how he got to the cille.

back in Jerry’s college day, you got caught with an agent you were out of sports.

you sure you know anything about college sports?

You ask him. I maintain it’s a bunch of nonsense.

Why are you posting phone numbers on here?

Because it’s on Google…
Nice try but I was there the day he died. I saw the papers on the table. So, you have everything to be a good journalist. You can talk with John Mack, his high school coach. I’ll give you his number too.

Oh man grasshopper let the take down begin

So which is it? Did Bill tell you or did you see them? and it can’t be well Bill told me and then I saw them, because first you said “Right after Darin died, Bill told me” and then in the next breath you say, I was there the day he died. so not only are you lying about seeing the papers but also being there the day he died. Be honest you don’t even know these people.

FYI your name from now on is Whopper

Jerry Rice!!! Jerry Rice!!! is your example!!! come one man he was in high school almost 50 years ago. when he was in high school we were still debating betamax vs VHS. How is what happen to him even relevant to today? And I really do want an answer to that.

everyone stop getting pulled into his obfuscation of the topic.

well all know the schools with the most money are going to have the most recruits. there are exceptions like a kid from Mississippi almost 50years ago. But we aren’t talking about the exceptions we are talking about the majority. So unless you can point out where there is a school with no money and has a more recruits then a school with a lot of money in the same region I don’t want to hear.

This is concerning friends of Jim and I. Not you. There is no change in my statements. Just clarification Jim. The papers were still on the table when we got there. When we got there, Bill told us what happened concerning only the signing of Booker. Other circumstances are not for these itchy eyes and ears.
Now I know what the Prophet felt like when he clarified the Sacred Grove vision. Congratulations Fernk, you aren’t any different than the naysayers.

when did a forum topic become a private conversation? once it is posted here everyone can respond to it. If you want it to be private send a direct message.

your cope and obfuscation doesn’t work on me. Answer the questions I posed above

how is your example of Jerry Rice relevant today?

Can you point out where there is a school with no money and has more recruits then a school with a lot of money in the same region?

Talk about obfuscation. What does Jerry Rice have to do with Lorenzo Booker?

Obfuscation:
the action of making something obscure, unclear, or unintelligible

I would have no idea you’re the one who brought them up.

back to the topic. answer my questions
