Is it true? Did I really just hear this?

You know it’s bad when a basketball thread turns into a women’s volleyball thread.

I mean I’m as happy as the next BYU fan regarding the success of the women’s volleyball team, and the coaches for both teams are from just up the coast from where I live so it makes it even cooler. I drive right in front of their high school every day I go to work.

But this just shows how bad the basketball team is.

Actually, if anyone would look at the women’s sport forums like basketball I think we would be posting there.
Anyway, keep the faith as we can turn everything around. Just make our free throws.

We have an edge when come to high altitude. Florida is from sea level and they will struggle when comes to 3rd sets or till 5th final sets.

JimH: This just shows how stupid this thread is. People don’t know how to name their posts and get them into this site. BYU gets screwed by being put on ESPN3, a streaming thread, where some of us can’t get it. That just shows the lack of respect for the No. 1 (4) team by putting them on the 3.

follow the money, that is all that matters anymore.

People are homeless and starving in this country but our society is obsessed with secularism, materialism, image conscious selfishness and how much the latest sports team is paying players, making money, greed, corruption… etc. It surrounds us yet nobody cares or does anything about it. It’s shameful.

We could go the way of Venezuela and follow the Marxist way of equal outcomes and see real poverty. Why do you think the Lord didn’t establish the United Order and continues the Church under Tithing and fast offerings under the law of consecration? The attempt to do so in this time ends up as communism with extreme poverty. Capitalism allows for liberty and freedom to thrive. Yes, it can also have its challenges as people try to control it as today’s progressives try to.
Just a few short years ago Notre Dame was losing a lot of games. So was Georgia. Just enjoy the ride as we still can occasionally beat the big boys.

Not enjoyable… is that what we have to look forward to? Is that what we hope for? What about beating the little boys? Maybe BYU could aspire to beating a team like Northern Illinois at home?

6-6 is the definition of average and mediocre. The biggest problem is the consistent way in which BYU loses games they could easily win. Look at how many losses this past year were easily winnable games in football. Now look at the basketball team and you see the same thing. It is a pattern that has been developing over a number of seasons now. There is no rational reason or excuse for it.

Parity in sports where the little teams are getting better talent is a good thing for socialists, isn’t it? Spread the wealth around so not as much corruption. That’s what I see happening.
As far as teams blowing leads, Georgia did a fine job with Alabama. It just happens and sometimes more to others. We have a challenge with coaching that we come out flat a lot after halftimes. Or, we don’t make adjustments to the other team’s adjustment. But, we still have some excellent talent coming back in football.

Generally Weber State is a good team and has knocked off some better teams… So I am not sure where the “Lowly” comes from. They have some really good players that has gone on to play in the NBA (Damian Lillard comes to mine).

I know sure why some of the players left the BYU program, and to be quite frank, no one on this board knows either. But for whatever reason, they left, Rose is a great coach in some aspects, but to be honest, he still lives in the run and gun era when he played at Houston with Clyde Drexler and Akeem.

I think Rose has met his apex, I think we need to find someone who can develop players to meet the NBA level.
Question: who was the last BYU player who stuck in the NBA? Not who was drafted, but actually played in the NBA for more than 4-5 years?

I don’t think having Utah players on the team hurts BYU, but I think that the way they are utilize does.

Jim,
The real truth to the issues in Basketball and Football is really the same thing… BYU has stopped wanting to have competitive teams, but rather they want to the teams to be missionary tools…

that is why we don’t recruit “certain” players, A) they can not meet the academic standards B) they are not “missionary” type players.

Could you see Danny Ainge playing BYU now? His antics on the floor would not be tolerated in today’s BYU culture.

I agree with your analysis. Good job!

What antics did Ainge have on the floor? Elder Tom Perry never missed a game when Ainge was playing and I was there to see it. I never saw Ainge do anything like Emery has done. What are you talking about?

As far as missionary work, our teams have always been missionary minded. I don’t think that has changed. We simply have to allow our young coaches to develop instead of wanting their heads on a platter so quickly. Rose, he may be on his way out. The extension may just be a gift to secure 3 years of salary.

Ainge had a temper, with a mouth to go along with it… Today, if that mouth was going, the current BOT would have issues with it.

Back in the 80’s BYU Sports was just that “Sports” not considered a missionary tool.

Floyd, to be clear. Rose is not a great coach.

also to be clear, we do know why players transferred. They got stuck behind LP3 players and Rose plays his favorites. Rose also does not look to the future and he sure does not develop young stars. So if you were stuck on the bench behind a Rose darling, with no chance to get floor time, would you transter? If you had 10Xs the talent that Worthington has and you had to watch him stink up the floor while you sat, would you transfer? Dastrup, Chatman, Beo and a host of others got the clear message and they left.

How are we doing in the middle this year? Rose plays favorites, not the best talent and that is why he will not last to the end of his contract and on a 3 game losing streak soon to be 5.

Careful what you say. Ainge was in my ward at BYU. And I played many a pick up game with him and the Boys.

More than Hearkening back to the Houston days, Rose hasn’t lost his JC college mentality: not worrying about developing players, run and gun offense, little to no defense.

Both comments are nonsense. I was at his games. And, it was a missionary tool back then as well. Where do you get these ideas from?

It’s a bunch of nonsense what he’s saying. Ainge was well liked while in college and except for the one incident with Roundtree, he was liked and respected in the NBA.

I remember in an NBA game where he got into a call with the officials and Brett Muskberger said he was probably explaining his position with 4 letter words. Bill Russel simply said “Danny Ainge? Well, no. He would not be using those words.” That was a great moment and a tribute to Ainge.

Actually Scott, this was pretty much detailed by those who knew him well. When he played, he was hot tempered (think Tree Rollins) and he could trash talk with the best of them (ask Larry Bird).

Off the court, from what I understand, he was a very low key type guy (according to Fred Roberts).

I actually know a couple of the players who played with Danny, Fred is one of them.

To Chris comment, I am not making any disparaging remarks about Danny, He was very competitive, he was also easily angered when he felt he was being disrespected.

Don’t care if you believe me or not, It is what I was told by people who were friends with and played with Danny.

today, I wish we had a couple of Danny’s on the team…

Do you know how many times announcers say what is “probably” happening and it turns out to be another thing? LOTS… unless Brett was right there in the conservation, he had no clue what was being said.

Danny Ainge was respected in the NBA because he had talent and he was very competitive. He was also a trash talker, and got quite a few T’s along the way.

The difference between you and me, I actually know people who knew and played with Danny…
