Kansas, 1st loss of the season

You guys crack me up! Georgia, Ohio State, Alabama-their image is winning football-end of the story. Whatever it takes! BYU is a bit different-winning is important, but image is just as important. If there is corruption in BYU athletics, the athletics will probably cease to exist. Sitake is the head of the football program and deserves every penny he gets, he generates respect for the program. As far as the OC goes, I don’t know. Players seem to like playing for him, but I’m not thrilled with some of the play calls, but it’s easy to second guess once the play is unsuccessful

It is especially easy to second guess when your offense is ranked, over the entire tenure of ARod, up near 90th in the country.

It is actually not a second guess …. It is just a fact. And actually your attitude is exactly what 90% of the fan base has. It isn’t all about winning. ….

Yes it is! And it is about trying to win every year and every game. Legally …. But still trying to win. Why would you spend 75 million a year on FB and not try to win?? Makes no sense

It’s is about winning, and legally, but with class. If ARod isn’t performing up to expectations, he will probably get let go. After all, they fired Detmer, and there is very few bigger icons than Detmer is. If I’m one of the 90% that say winning isn’t everything, I’m happy with that, knowing I’m not wasting my time watching a “winning is everything “ program. There are a lot of people out there watching BYU athletics, because “winning isn’t everything “. They watch because of what BYU represents, which oft times isn’t the most popular worldly thing, but something we believe in. It actually means something to me when other coaches and the media say how good they are treated by the school and the fans when they visit Provo

Who said winning isn’t equated with class? Guess we need to allow Utah to win every year so that we show class? Fans didn’t tune into BYU this year or any year to see them lose with class. I have no idea how expectations being lowered or allowed to stay low by keeping Arod employed is shown as having class ??

You know if ARod isn’t doing his job as offensive coordinator he should be let go, but not by your opinion or my opinion, but by those on the athletic department, notably Holmoe. I don’t think winning is everything. It’s why I’ll watch Army, Navy, or Air Force, before I’ll watch SEC teams. They will never be as good, but everyone of those players are smart boys and they are the most disciplined of most college athletes and to me, are fun to watch. Every one has different perspectives-it’s what makes the world interesting

Well your observation is valid - just don’t whine about not winning or poor playing calling, poor coaching, poor time/game management or an offense that is not ranked anywhere near the top 50 over all. I love your liking of the academy schools but I will remind you that they too like to win! And they fire coaches who don’t do it often enough. Which coach was fired at Navy? So they might be considered classless too!

I think you have the wrong idea about what I’m saying. I like winning as much as the next guy. I like winning and losing with class. I like that about Sitake and I believe he is great for the program. Imo he is neither an offensive guru or even a defensive guru, but imo he is a great team leader. Sometimes when plays don’t work out, we need to blame someone. Did the OC call a stupid play or did the QB fail to execute it properly. The end zone interception-was it a stupid call or a poor throw? In my opinion-it was a poor throw, but it was covered pretty well, too. The last series of plays in the Kansas game, they seemed too concerned with running clock time than scoring. Did ARod call the plays or did Retzlaff audible. Personally, I would have run qb options with the ability to run or pass. I’m not defending ARod, but from what I’ve read, the players really like him, maybe it’s true or maybe it’s not. Most of us aren’t in a position to know. There is so much that goes into winning. If you have a lousy OL, you aren’t going to win anything. If you can’t have a semblance of a running game it’s going to be tough. Some fans love to complain even though the team is having a great season. They will say it’s all to the defense’s credit or the offense’s credit, but in real football, both have to carry the load to potentially win a Big12 championship

I strongly disagree with this, especially as it relates to me. I wanted Tuiaki gone years before he was canned, and I still want ARod gone (our offense isn’t good this year, either, despite the record). But, coming off of a terrible year last year, and projected to be at the bottom this year, yes, I would be happy with a 9-4 or 10-3 season. Delusional BYU fans crack me up — we’ve only gone undefeated once ever, yet whenever we start 3-0, people start crowing and expecting to go undefeated. We have to be grounded somewhat in reality.

Nebraska chased Bo Pellini away, and he won 9 games every year. That’s substandard by Nebraska’s historical standards, but they would kill to have 9 win seasons now. I could live with 9 win seasons at BYU, too — especially in this new mercenary NIL era.

Perfect answer! Best post of the day. The players love Sitaki for sure. And, they never have an issue with Arod either. Oh, some will not be happy with their play time. But, he seems to have players stay around a lot more than others. I agree. After a play is over, all the armchair QBs come out. The pass on 1st down that was intercepted in the endzone isn’t a bad call. It was simply a very poor pass. Retzlaff doesn’t throw those passes well at all. Usually they are overthrown in the past. So, Arod wasn’t worried about an interception. That’s something Retzlaff can work on on the offseason. It was a play that may have made the difference because we didn’t have an opportunity to kick a field goal as well as a possible touchdown. Here’s the thing. We could have run it and fumbled as well. Who knows.

I just get tired of so-called fans who spend all their time trashing players and coaches. You said it right. We have coaches who not only teach football, but life lessons as well with the Gospel at the forefront. 9-1 and they still complain.

Who says the coaches and player aren’t trying to win? Weird statement.

Here’s another thought. The same Twackers were complaining when we were in the MWC and during independence. Now, we play legitimate teams every week that have players who will be in the NFL. Last year to this year is a big difference as we are deeper at all positions and are more experienced as well. We now are recruiting 4 and 5 star players like we are with basketball. It seems to me with all of this, Arod has had to improve to be 9-1.

It seems the only time you post it is negative and you really get amped up after a loss. Your viewpoint is unbalanced toward negativity. It seems to me you fancy yourself as some oracle of wisdom with more knowledge than the coaching staff. Go root for Alabama, and then maybe not, they have lost 2 games this year, and one of them to a team not much better than Kansas, if any better at all at this point. Relax a bit and enjoy the ride.

wording it that way, I agree but in no way did Kansas beat BYU. BYU beat BYU.

amen

Its pretty hard to fire a 9-1 OC. As Burton and other point out.

Ist thing I look at is, how is our Oline health wise? If we are good and we seem to be able to block and get good rushing numbers, then, how about or passing, is Retzaiff getting enough time to pass down field? I have questions about the Oline passing game. I don’t think Retzaiff gets enough time. Lastly, Is this a bit of both coaching and QB mistakes? No other way to paint it. We beat Kansas, just lost the game on a very bad fade pass that would of changed the trajectory of the game. a bad bounce, can’t blame that on anyone…and a bad set of coaching calls at the end of the game.

Actually, the end to the game was the penalty that backed us up 5 yards followed by a pass rout 7 yards short. Pay forgot the count and didn’t hike the ball. I’d also say, the pooch punt was a fluke when it hit our defender in the helmet. But, Robinson had no one around him to get on the ball and secure it. How did that ball get away from him? Was he one of the players who didn’t give it his all in practice as Roberts and other players complained about their preparation for the game?

You call it right. I don’t really pass judgment on a team until the season is over and then look at the body of work. The way the season ends often colors my view. There are 3 games left. Let’s see what happens. There will be at least one more loss at some point regardless of how the last 2 regular season games go. BYU will not win the national championship this year. There should be at least 10 wins. I don’t put much stock in the opinion of an amateur coach who only seems to find fault. He has a right to his opinion and I respect that but I don’t have to buy into to those opinions. Nobody will be fired after this season is over unless there is a total collapse in the last 3 games.Ten wins would be a very good season. I think everybody but one person here would agree with that.

There are a lot of “what ifs” in sports. The end result is the final and we should really move on to the next challenge. Not focusing on just getting better, cost the Utah AD 40k and deservedly so. He impugned the integrity of the official and the conference. This is what I meant by winning and losing with class, something Sitake does pretty well and as a former athlete and a fan, appreciate.

If you are giving odds with ASU beating Alabama on a neutral field, I would like to humbly put my life savings and my wife and all 4 of my children on ‘Bama, thank you.

My prediction of the day is we average at least 8 wins per season as long as Jay Hill stays at BYU. Our MASSIVE haul of defensive recruits this last year and what Hill has already proven should put elite talent on that side of the ball for a few years.

Naw, I wouldn’t want you to do anything Sitaki would not agree with. ASU is playing well and Alabama has lost two games, one not so good. ASU is peaking. Is Alabama too?

I would put my life’s savings on that game…

I would be willing to bet on the ASU-BYU game. ASU is lead by a Fr. Kansas, by a fifth year Sr.
