Scouting Bellarmine U

Friday night we will get our 1st look a Marcus Adams Jr. I’ll have to see him in action before I give him a nick name.

So far I have:
Spenc Johnson= Cool Hand Luke
Richie Saunders= The ever-ready bunny
Robinson= Smooth Butter

I meant to post this here, but started it on the GA State thread. So to repeat:

Richie Saunders: I really hope people understand and appreciate his athleticism. The days of slow white guys at BYU are over. Richie combines hyper athleticism with outstanding effort. Truly a coach’s dream to have a kid like that. He’s long, super fast, hyper quick, and bounces like a pogo stick on overdrive.

Richie, SJ, Jaxson, Noah, Hall, and Stewart. For me, these guys are my Defensive Super Six and are the keys to beating good teams (provided we can shoot at least 30% from deep in our bad games). Remember we played TERRIBLE against Utah and still almost won. This is a good team. But BYU has NEVER EVER EVER had this kind of length, strength, speed, and overall athleticism on the perimeter. Because of the Super Six, we can switch on almost every ball screen, because each of them can guard any perimeter guy, and effective switching is the KEY to defending the 3 in half court defense, and defending the 3 is the KEY to winning in today’s D1 ball. Each of the Super Six has his own strengths, but as a unit they can and will defend the perimeter like no BYU team in history.

Dawson: you saw what I saw. He’s a scorer off the dribble. He will win some games for us. What we have seen in the practice games is that this team is just a few things short of having potential to make a deep run in the dance:

  1. Fouss
  2. Someone who can score facing the basket off the dribble (Dawson)
  3. One true all around individual talent to match the opponents’ best guy (Marcus)

LET’S GOOOOOOOOOOO!

Take Robinson out of the equation and BYU loses by 20. he is as close to a Star as we have. So glad he is a team player, buys into Pope’s vision.

I have watched my fair share of Big 12 ball. OK last night-these guys have one play, a pic off the high elbow, drive to the hoop. makes a guy like Adams crucial because Foos, Atiki and Khalifa will not be able to guard elite guards driving.

The fire power of BYU can be giant killers at the Marriot. No one, not Houston, maybe Kansas because they have the best big man in all of college Bball. Road games, a whole diff. matter

It’s so hard to project our W/L until we see more league play–from the whole league. Take Texas for example: UT is 8-2 with one “decent” win over a 6-5 LSU team and 7 practice games. But both losses are vs ranked teams. That resume looks a lot like BYU’s. Cincy is 9-2 but hasn’t play a ranked team and lost to 5-5 Xavier. Is Iowa State any good? They lost to a meh VaTech and lost by only 4 to ranked Texas A&M, but ALL 9 of their wins are against truly the most pathetic schedule I’ve ever seen. So are they almost as good as ranked A&M, or was that a good game for them? We simply don’t know because ALL their other games were against a dreadful schedule that makes BYU’s practice game opponents look like March Madness teams.

4 of our first 5 league games are very winnable (Cincy, @ Baylor, @UCF, ISU, and @TTU). I think we can make some realistic predictions when it comes time to play Houston and UT at home. Are we 4-1 with 2 road wins and looking like a legit top third of the league team, are we 1-4 and overwhelmed, or are we 2-3/3-2 and looking like a middle of the pack team?

All I did was copy and paste your comment and copy and paste what I wrote previously. Thanks for coming through for me fish!
I love the banter back and forth!
You know you would rather live here. We just need to get the right politicians back here in California and it would return to the good old days.

If you are suggesting that Dickinson transfer from Michigan is the best big man in all of college basketball I am going to lose my mind. I have watched him play so many times it makes me nauseous. Why? because he is not even close to being the best, let alone that good. Dude is like a robot, stiff as a board, no agility, rudimentary skill set, can’t dribble, can’t shoot outside of 10 feet. I could go on and on. I absolutely despise his game and his skill level. He won’t do squat, even if he gets drafted. Holmgren would eat him alive.

I’ve thrown my line in the water, waiting for a big fish to latch on to this post.

You have me laughing hard…I think i said close to the same the first time around…you get me.

You got that right 6 months out of the year. Merry Christman bro.

I’m biting. The one game I watched, Kansas lost to Marquette. They kept saying he is the best…just passed it on without much research on my own.

This BYU team has so much bench talent, one would be tempted to play all of them but that would be a big mistake. Stick with the core, as Baker, Foos and Adams at the sacrifice of some of the guys we’ve mentioned but in no way do we try to play everyone.

Well, you may be forgetting one thing. It’s also about match ups. Pope will have done his due diligence in scouting each team. And, to be able to rest players and keeping them fresh could be to our advantage.

I think Zac Eddy of Purdue is the best big man.

knew I was forgetting someone. Eddy would have to be the frontrunner for POY.
