The New Years bowl picture

no way! I would wait and play them in the playoffs and $$$. But I would play a ND or Utah, if it came up.
BYU is a 25% chance of making the playoffs currently. We will see more teams lose and be affected as was Clemson. Right now a red hot Ok is set to play the Big 12 leader O St. U. If they win, that would give all of the Big 12 leaders 2 losses. The Big 10 is on disarray and I don’t think the P 12 is doing any better with its Covid challenges.

Tis better to win out and wait to see if we need work to do

Here is a well written article on how this all works.
https://www.si.com/college/byu/news/where-byu-football-needs-to-be-ranked-to-make-a-new-years-six-bowl

In Hind sight, the P12 laid a monstrous egg when, as Ton Larimer alluded to, they were going to shut down college football … until they saw that the other majors were going forward. Only then did they, kicking and screaming, decide to have a season albeit delayed by 2 months. Now as they look back, they really goofed by leaving 0 leeway to make up Covid games. They will, in the end, not make the playoffs on lack of enough games to qualify. 7 is not enough. Utah will get in 3 if they are lucky.

California or the leftwing Democrats are patterned now after the Stalin-Lennin thinking of pushing granny over the cliff and tyranny on everyone else except the elites. Newsom is contemplating curfews. It’s a nasty virus and has to be dealt with. But shutting completely down isn’t the answer. Politicians are just doing whatever because the scientists either have no clue what to do or they do know that it cannot be controlled and play along with the politicians so they don’t look so inadequate. They aren’t God and they know it now.

My take on this is BYU isn’t going to make the playoff unless by some miracle a good P5 team schedules them on 11/28 or 12/5 and BYU wins and a few other chips fall in place. They just need to win the rest of the games scheduled and a New Years 6 should happen and that would be a first and I would be happy. BYU played K St. in the 97 Cotton Bowl but my recollection is that was pre-BCS days and the Cotton Bowl was considered 2nd tier to the Rose, Sugar, Orange, and Fiesta Bowls.

To me the playoff chance is so remote that I don’t even give it a thought. New Years 6 is a great possibility and that is what I am hoping for.

I don’t think we have any chance at the playoff unless we get another real good opponent To play and beat them.

PAC12 is talking about playing non-league games. Utah certainly needs games

Well, that would sure be fun. But I don’t think UofU wants anything to do with that game this year. Too much risk of a loss with no upside in the rankings if they win.

I agree, and that includes most, if not all of the other ranked teams in P5 conferences. They ALL know BYU wants to play another ranked team, and the response has been underwhelming to say the least. They just have more to lose than gain by playing a tough BYU team. Guilt may get BYU a New Year 6 bid, but no CFP, in my humble opinion. If wishes were dollars we would all be rich…

All I can do is laugh at the PAC12 this year. Because of the Covid they were all for postponing the season until spring, then they had second thoughts when they saw others playing and themselves missing out. Though I would like to see BYU play Oregon in the Fiesta Bowl, because unless they are playing BYU, I am a Ducks fan, Utah can go “fish”-nothing related to you Chris:wink:maybe Bronco would like to revisit Provo-that would be interesting :slightly_smiling_face: as is-I like the Fiesta Bowl matchup BYU/Oregon

CanPass:
You raise a good point: Holmoe has proven to be willing to play anyone, anywhere, any time. I have posted many times that I disagree with his strategy. But credit given where credit is due, and we all know Holmoe has been bird-dogging these guys for 2 months trying to get a P5 team to play BYU–but they don’t want to play. I DO think we get into a NY6 game, because of the consistently dominant play, the great publicity around Wilson, and the analysts pounding home the message that this BYU team has a lot of NFL talent, notwithstanding the crappy schedule.

As an Oregonian and sometimes Duck fan, I would LOVE that matchup! I just hope the Ducks get all their games in to build up their resume. The PAC12 Presidents and Commish look like clowns the way they have handled this whole thing, and I don’t want the Ducks to pay the price. Look out for LDS OT Penei Sewell (who decided to skip this PAC12 gong show and is sitting out) to be a top 5 pick in this draft, and his little brother MLB Noah (#1), who I predict will play the minimum and also be a top 10 pick. He was the best player on the field in the Ducks’ win at Wazzou on Saturday, and he’s a true freshman. Just to twist the knife, their mom works for BYU, and we couldn’t get either one :-(. I’m not sure how to do a bawling my eyes out emoji but if I would if I could about Kalani missing on these kids.

Quack, Quack… Cougars eat ducks…

:duck::leopard:

:joy:I’ll cry for both of us. Long time Duck fan, but doesn’t trump being a BYU alum. I actually believe the two match up pretty well. BYU is probably more physical and Oregon a little speedier. Both are fundamentally solid with good coaches. It would be a good draw for fans, too

Indeed. Politics in ncaa sports is sickening. This is the main reason why I was happy when byu went independent.

These bcs bandits are smug, greedy, manipulative. It’s not even possible for byu to get a fair shake in today’s college football landscape. Even if byu were to somehow land a new years six bowl game, they certainly won’t be matched up against any of the big boys. Its like placing a bet in a crooked casino where the cards are stacked and results are manipulated.

The only way byu can break through the glass ceiling is for the playoffs to expand to 8 teams.

Why would they do that? It makes too much sense. It would also allow for a non P5 to play for a title, something the BCS was designed to exclude. Case closed.

Not to play the devil here, but what if BYU were paired with Cinn in a NY 6 game? That would be a mighty slap to both teams who are dying to play the champion of any of the P5 leagues.

BYU really needs to watch out for the NCAA. They just approved a change that allows the P12 and B10 to qualify for major bowls even if they have not met the mandatory 7 game wins due to covid. Could a 4 or 5 win team overtake a 10 win BYU team?

A week ago I was under the" BYU does not have to play anymore games after a SDSU win" column, now; BYU may have to put Utah in their plan if Utah stops USC and Utah is willing to play a late Dec. game…Imagine the ESPN demand if that happened?

Despite all the predictions of a BYU NY6 bowl game, I don’t think it will happen. If we had a good year last season and had momentum in the national NCAA press then it would be possible. But we didn’t and don’t. BYU is a wild card who has played no one. Maybe Wilson is a legit first rounder but maybe he isn’t. I bet he will struggle against a good team and so will our vaunted receivers. If BYU makes the NY6 they will be pitted against Cincy. The only thing that can change the tone is for BYU to get a P5 quality team ranked in the top 12 to play them. If they lose they are out of all the good bowls for sure but it they win they will be put against a genuine P5 power in a bowl game. But it is a all or nothing strategy. If they are that good of a team then they ought to want to prove it.

A Utah game does nothing for us interns of a NY6 appearance but a Utah and a Oregon would put us in the CFP conversation. Of course they will be away games. I still think BYU would be 8-4 this season if they had played the original schedule. The defense is simply not strong enough and our offensive line, despite predictions of 4 guys into the NFL has only 1 NFL ready guy. They might get another 1 invited to a camp but I doubt more than 1 lineman plays in the NFL. Certainly the offense is improved but the linebackers and DB’s are average and the line is only a bit above average. Tonga is the real deal. We have had 20-30 lb advantage on every team we played … including BSU in the trenches and against a good P5 that would be evened up. Technique would rule the day and that comes down to coaching. We are probably a top 20-22 team but not a #8. Next year we could be a top 10 team. Just watch as this season unfolds. BYU can win and they will drop when the CFP rankings come out.

Today:

Need UCF to beat Cin

Need Utah to beat USC

Need OK to beat OStU

Need OSU to stomp Indiana

Need Wisconsin to demolish NWU

Need UCLA to beat Oregon

Need Clemson or ND to lose somehow.

You might get 1/2 of those wishes, Fish!

great evaluation but I would say a Utah win over USC and if Utah would play BYU, Monster ratings and buzz, do it on a Friday nite, BYU by 10. Could get BYU a playoff push. NY 6 consideration depends on about 20 fluid stories (just look at the last second Clemson cancelation). I was 100% sure BYU was in a week ago until the NCAA news (those Bass-Turds),
