Oh here comes the conspiracies now. For so long you have resisted. Just can’t help it
“Conspiracy” is only something that happens when it serves a specific purpose. If there is no reason for it, it doesn’t happen. Just another aspect of “conspiracy” intended to help you understand exactly what it is. It won’t help but I need to tell you anyway.
I suspected that your conspiracy hadn’t developed anything substantive…
But the other question was meaningful…
So, what’s the reason you go there often?
I have answered both of those questions multiple times… meaningful or not.
Emery offered a tip for those who are battling this illness. “Stay at home and get away from people,"
And guard L.J. Rose sat out of Tuesday practice as he dealt with soreness and swelling in his knee.
“He’s had it for quite a few weeks,” Rose said. “We’re trying to pinpoint it and trying to figure out what’s wrong with it.”
I’m no coach in any sports but why Dave Rose allow Nick around if he was that sick along with his sore leg or knee. And for LJ Rose having an issue with his health for quite some time or too long. It is poor decision on Dave Rose. I knew Nick should of stayed home and he was not productive at all!
Mostly not
I don’t know many athletes that don’t play when sick. I’ve seen Jordan, Kobe go for 50 points sick. And a lot others. Is it the best thing? Well, since it is usually too late to isolate because the bugs have already been spread before the worst signs come, might as well play. Spread it to the other team
That one game against the Jazz in NBA final at SLC. Michael Jordan either had food poison or just a flu bug and he became mortal and won that game. Nick is no Kobe either! I wonder if the Zags got the bug too, hmmm, I wonder.
The point wasn’t how good Emery is to Kobe. The point is almost all athletes make every effort to compete when they are sick. That’s just a fact. The other point is they often have their best games sick.
When Kobe goes for 50 and says he is “sick”, that is a relative term. How sick is he really when he seems just fine out there. Nobody really knows except Kobe and he is probably fabricating somewhat. He really isn’t that sick…
There were times he was very sick and still played and went for 50. Happens a lot
Explain to me again how BYU has the same record year in and out when it comes to ROAD GAMES IN THE WCC and how Coach Rose is the only guy for the job? Rose’s style gets him some of these shooting phenoms but it also keeps his from recruiting some athletes who would round out his defense…never forget that.
How is it that you can beat a team by 30 at home and yet lose on the Road? I am not asking for Rose’s head, I am only stating that for our road record to change, you would have to get a different coach…or Rose would have to let a competent defensive coach run the show and get out of his way on defense.
So not only are you an assistant coach for BYU that attends every practice, now you are the assistant team doctor for the Lakers that knows exactly how sick every player is. Incredible…
Jim,
Google 1280 the Zone and look for Steve Cleveland interview with David James and Patrick Kinnahan this morning… you may need to wait until tomorrow before it is posted (Can not find it right now)…
I think you would enjoy the time listening to it because Steve talks about the one weakness that BYU seems to have “No consistent defensive presences”…
I listened to it this morning on the way to work and thought of all you have said over the course of the year… Just thought you would like it.
As I wathched the BYU game last night after watching the UNC/Duke game I realized that the Y does not play team ball. As I thought about it, they have not played team ball for the last several seasons since before Jimmer time. Jimmer was the one trick pony, followed by Haws, and then Collinsworth. We now have Mika. All of these are good players but one person does not make a team. In years past we have not had the talent we currently have and have had to rely on our “stars.” I am from NC and have watched alot of great teams in the ACC through the years. Great teams are just that “teams.” As good as Mika is he forces too many shots–throw it out and reset. We have players who can score–I think Childs is under used–we need offensive schemes such that when teams collapse on Mika, he has open outlets to pass to. We need schemes that get everyone involved.
As for defense? Non-existent!
I stand by my earlier comment regarding lack of improvement over the course of a season. This season is like several of the past–no improvement from game one to the end of the season. We learned nothing from the UVU game–I thought it was groundhog day.
We have talented players and as reluctant as I am I can only contribute this to poor coaching. No defense, lazy play, lack of motivataion, poor offensive scheme…you cannot blame it on youth. It has to be poor offensive/defensive shemes and team culture that accepts mediocrity.
After the late (11PM EST) start here on the east coast and two hours of frustration, I feel better getting this off of my chest.
My two cents…
I will do that, thanks for the heads up Floyd.
So I listened to the interview and I believe he is spot on. Cleveland is a smart dude. I am going to switch to another thread and re-post the post I made there before I listened to his interview. I included defense on my problems list. Anyhow he mentioned a lot of other contributing factors and I posted some of those. Anyhow, here it is.
I have some thoughts on where things go from here. I am hopeful. I know that my generally critical tone may not make it seem like I am but it doesn’t change the fact that I am. After decades of being a BYU fan I have become trapped into the belief that success for BYU will translate into publicity for the church and gospel. That has caused me to become more invested than I probably should be. My own experiences at BYU have also formed my perspective. I loved going to school there but I often despised the hypocritical atmosphere that was so pervasive. Unfortunately my perception is that it still exists. It is very difficult to gain entrance there and I believe it contributes to arrogance, special treatment, etc. When someone says they go to BYU, they often feel the need to clarify whether it is Provo or Idaho… anyhow, I am rambling because it is Sat. morning.
My point is that there are reasons why this team and these players are not improving (in spite of what grasshopper claims) and it involves multiple factors.
In spite of the expectations and hype for the LP3, I think it has been disastrous overall for the team and BYU basketball in general. I believe it has resulted in a lack of competitive practices, caste system amongst players, lack of effort because of the lack of accountability, arrogance and inability to see reality. I think it is a combination of coaching (allowing this culture to exist) and players immaturity in perpetuating it. I know some of you will understand without a lot of explanation. I also believe it would be more easily explained in a verbal discussion. It might require a 20 minute discussion but I believe my perceptions are accurate and they are based on a lot of observation. All of the problems we see with defense, forced effort on offense, lack of teamwork, turnovers and lackadaisical play on both ends of the court, playing time allocation, etc. contribute to what I believe is happening.
I believe the primary solution will be found if and when the team understands all of this and matures. That doesn’t necessarily mean experience but it may help. It is more of a commitment on the part of the main players to be willing to do what it will take to make the entire team better. We will see if they can.
No, you are right on. I don’t know if it feels better but it is a good thing to vent and say what you are seeing and feeling. I agree with it exactly.
The weirdest part of it all is that it seems so glaringly obvious, yet the players and coaches don’t do a darn thing about it. They just don’t seem to improve at all. It is really bad this season because they have all of this supposed talent and the fact of the matter is they don’t play well together at all. It is horrible watching it.
It is so frustrating I can’t begin to describe it.
