Do you ever take in the fact he is a sophomore in the D1 leagues of a power conference? He will make great strides between now and next year. 11-2 with a QB with little D1 experience, I’ll take that. Apparently, many other players around the country understand and are transferring in as well.
Leavitt-true freshman. #3 rated QB in the big 12.
Becht-Soph. #5
Retzlaff #11
KSU suffered the same dilemma as BYU. Avery Johnson was a TO machine in big games, doomed their Big 12 chances as well. All the talent in the world, just poor in game decisions.
Johnson #7

Stop defending mediocracy.
The real question is whether Retzlaff has an upside at this point. Can he become more accurate with his passes? Can he develop the corner of the endzone pass? It’s been a while since we have had a QB play every game.
It took awhile before you got to this point but waa laa, you finally did! Why does it take so long to get there? You know what, don’t worry about it. I’m just glad you finally are sounding somewhat sane, haha.
Yes, of course he has upside–as does almost every D1 starter. He is a tough kid. He is a great example for BYU. He is an above average runner. His completion % went from an unplayable 50% last year to a subpar 58% this year. His TD:Int ratio increased from an unplayable 1:1 to 1.8:1. That signals improvement. But the data was clear: even with a big step forward, Jake was STILL a lower-tier B12 QB this year statistically–and it’s a shame, because BYU had one of its best defenses EVER, a very good running game, and fantastic wideouts.
Jake was not charged with winning very much with his arm–he had only 2 games (SIU and ASU in a desperate comeback) with over 300 yards passing, and NINE games where he had under 220 yards (I had to look twice to believe that one). He is what they call a game manager.
BYU’s 3 primary RBs ALL averaged OVER 5.0 YPC. That is AWESOME. That was the identity of the BYU offense. The QB’s main job was “don’t screw it up.”
I may sound like I’m bashing on him, but if a team is going to rely on a solid running game and use the QB primarily as a “game manager,” job #1 and #2 and #3 is DON’T TURN IT OVER. ESPECIALLY IN SCORING RANGE.
Well, as a legit Junior next year, we will see this from him. At the beginning of the year, I wanted to see Bohanan get a shot. When he did get into a couple of games, I wasn’t impressed with him. So, here we are. 11-2 winning the most watched bowl game with excellent talent returning and transferring in for next year. Relax! Who thought we could be here in only our second year coming from independence? Arizona came from a P4 conference, right?
