BYU Football: Remembering the legendary Keith Rivera – Deseret News

First time I saw BYU play in person was that year at USAFA…horrible game 12-10.
My father worked Sports Info office at USAFA; he couldn’t believe how long the BYU return missionaries wore their hair.

Coach Martin was on the fade after an illustrious career and Edwards was just winding up for his HoF…I remember Gary Sheide being easily the most charismatic QB I saw that year despite his long hair.

It was the only game of any sport I ever saw my mother attend; proudly wearing her BYU gear she had owned since before my parents met. She was pleasantly surprised that BYU won a football game. In her days at the Y basketball was king and football was an afterthought.

I was a senior at BYU in 74. Saw all the home games in person. Rivera was a good one. So sorry to hear he is gone. You could hardly ever get BYU on tv at the time unless it was a regional telecast. There was no cable in those days.!

I loved Scheide and Jeff Blanc. Blanc was a hard nosed competitor. BYU had a great front 4 that year. I think Rivera, Paul Linford, and Wayne Baker were all conference.
