Bear Bachmeier Reshapes Future of the QB Position at BYU

Bear is probably going to be the starting QB this fall!

I hope so since Retzlaff is almost certainly gone. He has by far the most upside of the guys left in the room. I hope he is poring over the playbook and working with the receivers. Some people think that since he missed spring practice he won’t have enough time to get ready. I don’t really buy that because true freshmen often step right into a starting role without the benefit of spring practice. Bear at least has a redshirt year at Stanford working with a P4 school. If I am not mistaken. Correct me if I am wrong.

Sounds like he has more upside than Retzlaff but just lacks the game experience.

Just did some further reading on Backmeier. He is a true freshman. He was only at Stanford a few weeks. Think Jameious Winston and a few others. Backmeier could step right in. The opening game would be a good one for him to get lots of time. Portland St shouldn’t be a problem.

Certainly does not look good for BYU or Retzlaff but…After talking to some BYU coaches, they caution everyone to hold any judgement until the facts are presented.
There are three things that stand out to me:
1-The filing of a civil suit vs. regular filing (to me, this screams a gold digger)
2- Provo police refute this person’s accusations that the Provo Police recommended she drop the case,
3- The lawyer said that he Retzlaff is factually innocent, Means he plans on proving that there was no rape, no assault.

But yes, I would get the next guy ready,
I have full faith that Cole Hillstead can lead the team

Do you mean Hillstead rather than Hagan?

I certainly hope Retzlaff is factually innocent as his lawyer claims. I liked his demeanor last year both on and off the field. He seemed like a standup guy. He didn’t seem like the kind of person who would do what he is accused of.

You know that if by some miracle he plays this year every feminist on every campus BYU plays at will be there creating a circus even if he is innocent. We live in an era where we are told you have to believe the woman. I don’t buy that. That goes too far. That sets up every man to have his reputation destroyed. A guy who was well known, Garrison Keillor, who had a radio program on NPR called The Prairie Home Companion was accused of sexual assault for a minor incident that occurred years before he was accused and NPR fired him. Keilor’s story is that he was standing next to a woman he worked with and she had a sleeveless dress on that had spaghetti straps and he put his arm around her shoulder and his hand went under the spaghetti strap. He meant nothing by it and apologized and years after the fact he was fired. Of course most of us remember the Clarence Thomas farce where he was accused of sexual harassment and the Brent Kavanaugh hearing where he was accused of sexual assault many years after the fact.

During the me too movement Harvey Weinstein was accused by multiple young women and there was overwhelming evidence of his guilt. Epstein was another predator and there was overwhelming evidence, but you can’t assume that every man who is accused of sexual assault is guilty.

Sexual harassment, assault, rape are very serious things and since they are so serious you just can’t believe they happened without evidence.

The problem at BYU is you sign an agreement to abide by the honor code and if you have consensual sex you are running the risk of being accused like Retzlaff has been. Even it was consensual he is probably toast at BYU. If he had consensual sex and came clean back in late 2023 he probably would have been suspended for a semester and could have played in 2024.and this year. Maybe he didn’t do anything contrary to the honor code but have a girl in his room. We probably will never know for sure exactly what the facts are.

I am not making any assumptions either way on this. If he was falsely accused I feel for him. I am very saddened by the whole thing regardless of the facts. It is very bad for Retzlaff if he is innocent and very bad for the young woman if he is not. In fact it is a bad thing for both no matter what happened.

I see you edited your post. It seems like BYU did have a QB named Cole Hagan a few years ago but he never played.

As you said, this happened in 2023. He didn’t play for the first 8 games. Perhaps he had already gone through his probation. Who knows. Or maybe afterwards. And, if there is no way to prove he had sexual relations then it’s his word against hers. No suspending then. We will just have to let it play out. Next man up is necessary.
