BYU 8-0 vs. UCF

1 Belief…BYU players and coaches quietly “Believed” all off season that they would be very good, possibly contenders. The rest of the world was snoozing on this team. You can go back in time and look at the makeup of every winning team and you will find legendary players that 'Believed" they would win…The will to win is a gift to some, the gift to “follow” also has to happen for a TEAM to become legendary. So …it is time to ID the Believers (stars)

2 Retzaiff: I never dared say this out loud until today, this boy is an NFL QB. Knew he had the chops before he came to BYU, #1 non P4 QB, signs…sucks for 5 games then with the help of John Beck, gets his feet and head right. I also think Sitake helped him understand, "Son, you got to get your AD D under control and eat it from time to time. Has all the skills. has elite running, not speed but pure field awareness. The Throws he is making has NFL all over it. Dare say it, Retzaiff is the Big 12’s best (KSU’s Johnnson is the stat #1) QB.

3 RB Martin, is a star, not sure he is the believer or the follower but he flipped the switch in the OSU and UCF game. I put him #2 because BYU beat UCF on 1st downs and game clock on our running game. Back to back 100ygames makes BYU lethal…

4 The entire D backfield. These guys are so quick, nothing gets by them. You can’t throw on them. allows our line to pin their ears back and get after QBs, RBs and any other vermin that crosses that line.

5 Kelly, Taggert, Gasker. are there any other LBers in America that can harass, rundown elite RBs. Kelly’s closing speed is crazzzzzy. He ran down their all american, Harvey, who has blazing speed. Wall as well has that closing speed.

6 Lassiter, our big play TD machine or Roberts 1st down when you need one, choose your poison.

7 Hill has been a game changer for BYU. His D schemes have shut down 7 of 8 teams to the point that BYU has over performed in every single game but OSU.

8 This was the big one, the one where UCF, the #2 rushing offense in the nation was going to ruin BYU run at contender. Instead, Hill gave them a dose of run defense to the point that UCF has canned their 3rd QB.

9 BYU had the ball 40:32 minutes of a 60 minute game! UCF was supposed to grind us down, instead, BYU controlled the game for 55 minutes, gave up 2 cheap TDs to a true Fr. with our 2nd unit. This control thing was historic from the standpoint that it has never happened before.

10 what a whacky year in the big 12…UTah was supposed to be the favorite…followed by Kansas, OSU and BYU down at the very bottom.

UTAh is a victim of their our head coach. Whitt has always hung his hat on D and ball retention. No QB, No bowl game. Now they are on their 3rd QB,good luck with BYU.

Kansas was a bottom dweller all season til these last 2 games. Love that they come to BYU or I would sweat a little. Kst should of lost to Kansas.

OSU- what happened?

ISU is the only pre season challenger to come through.

Is there a clear path to the Big 12 finals…kind of feels like the UCF game was that final sphincter game. While I want BYU to continue to be the underdog, BYU will be favored in every game going forward except the Big 12 final.

I think the online is being overlooked. They have been stellar the last few weeks and coach Woods seems to have the online playing at a high level right now. They did a good job pass blocking in the early games and the last few weeks with healthy RBs the run game has come on very strong giving BYU great balance.

On paper AZ St on the road looks to be a dangerous game. I am taking nothing for granted against Utah. Whittingham has pulled things together before in late season and although BYU should be a clear favorite we should be prepared for a very difficult game. I hope the players are laser focused because Utah will be. Too bad we will be favored because I think BYU felt disrespected against UCF and they came out focused and stayed that way until the game was out of reach and UCF scored a couple of meaningless TDs late in the game.

Looking at my prior post, I think they went and won with 2). Gotta say, I did some pretty good guess work on this prediction. So, my TOP was just a bit off as was the score, but I was off 1 yard on rushing defense. And Retzlaff played a complete game. Hill is THE Evil Genius fish. What will he dial up for the Pukes?

"BYU can win two ways

  1. Offense strikes quickly and often. Big chunk plays passing and 7+ avg rushing. Just swamp UCF’s boat with points. UCF can’t keep up. Defense on the field a lot, but limits UCF to 220 yds rushing or less.
  2. Offense slow grinds for long drives and scores 6 out of 8 drives. 37 minutes to 23 minutes of possession. Defense getting more rest and keeps UCF under 180 yds rushing.

Number one key to success is Retzlaff playing B+ to A in BOTH halves. Not one half, not 73 seconds, but entire game for the first time this season against a P4 opponent.

Prediction, either 1) or 2) is fine for me. I’ll go BYU 43 UCF 24.[quote=“aro, post:2, topic:10374, full:true”]

Since I’m in a deep, self-adulation mode, here is my Sept 12th post:

“Game Day Coming to Salt Lake City!! Cam Rising’s #6 8-0 Utah faces Gerry Bohanon’s #9 8-0 BYU in the Holy War of Holy Wars, November 9th. Book it!”
Got one team right at no losses, And Byu at #9. but Utah really turded the punch bowl for this what would have been an historic game. Yeah, yeah, I kinda blew the QBs playing in it too.
oh, what could have been!
BTW, my Ute friends are “I’m not ready to talk about it” Now thats what I call a fun listen!

You called it good job!
