BYU and the CFP, week by week

Every week we discuss what BYU did to earn the CFP invite…for week one, BYU came out and showed that Bear had upped his game. from his HS coach: ‘The Sacrifice It Took’ — Bear Bachmeier’s QB Coach Reveals Brutal Training Behind His BYU Rise

It is not so much talent but he ability to master new material in short periods of time. He gets something new thrown at him and he prefects it. 80% completion rate and 2 of the 4 dropped balls were catchable, the point is, Bear was deadly accurate.

2 Receivers: I think there was 1 dropped pass the entire game. We will know more when a real defense comes to town on Sat.

3 starting point critical: BYU started last season unranked the 1st 5 games, even though the previous year BYU was 10-2. BYU is the most underrated P4 team in America. and again this year, BYU is better, 2nd year QB is killing it to the point there is Heisman talk and yet the disrespect continues. If BYU were a Big 10 or Sec team, after finishing #11, BYU would be ranked inside the top 10 so the # 14 ranking is again a slight…but the change is…BYU is talked about openly as a CFP playoff team before the season started so we are MILES AHEAD of last season’s start.

By the numbers, BYU football is still the most underrated program in the nation

what have I been saying for years now?

The under ranking of BYU hasn’t really hurt us yet. Even if we were ranked top 10 last yr to start the season our - one big loss to TTU and we would have dropped out of the top 10. The second loss would have put us about where we were slotted to end the season in about the same Bowl game we ended up in. The problem with the under ranking is IF TTU had actually been better than they turned out to be - BYU would have been stuck on the outside looking into the CFP. As it turned out - no harm no foul. This year the rankings will help BYU get a better shot at the CFP unless they crumble on the field.

I don’t believe that for a second. BY every standard and rule, BYU should of been in. They were ranked top 15 to end the season 2024 and start unranked because of a Fr. QB with virtually the same team was by design. Big 10 and SEC are not that much better and to be sure, TTU did not do anyone in the Big 12 favors by laying an egg in the big lights. Both BYU and TTU need to lay waste to those type games in 2026 and baring injury, I think one of the two will break through this season.

The big 12 has laid some stinkers on the big stage lately (TCU in the NCF finals and embarrassed and well as TTU last year). hoping this will be the breakout year for both.

a better ranking in the beginning of the year dose help. at the beginning of the year you have a better chance of moving up as team ahead of you lose. the problem comes if you aren’t ranked and you have to fight your way up, because at the end of the season the Poll is almost solidified making it harder to brake into the top 10. if we do lose 1 game, we aren’t going to fall as much and we have time to redeem our selves to make it back into the top 10.

@thawk I do think your right, #11 at the end of year was probably correct. we had a lot of close wins, and those two loses to TTU and TTU laying an egg didn’t help. I think there is some argument to be made to move us up one to two spots, but based on what we showed 11 feels right. if we would have made it into the CFP and wone a game then I would change my mind, but I can only evaluate us on the games we have played.

But, the big news is what I thought should happen with Michigan, they dropped 12 places out of the top 25 to #28! Western Michigan was brought up to #33.

I am a little confused with the AP poll…

BYU blows out as expected Utah Tech and gets moved down one spot. While Utah beat Idaho and moves up one spot?

Ole Miss almost gets beat by Louisville and they remain the same (#9)
SMU (#19) almost loses to Florida State, and they move up 2 spots (#17)?

It is going to be a weird year this year; can we blame it El Nino?

That does seem weird except for Michigan. But, it’s the first game for most teams and the voters are getting their first real look at teams to rank them. There were questions from our game. I mentioned a few like Martin didn’t have big holes to run through. Same with others. The backs had to make the gains they did with their abilities. A couple of key injuries makes a difference as well for some teams that haven’t been real deep in the past like BYU. The Ole Miss thing is a question mark for sure.

I don’t really care about pills at this point. Just keep winning. I think BYU has to be 11-1 and the loss needs to be close. Then they need to get in the Big 12 championship game and at the very least keep it close.

We weren’t going move up at the end of the year because of the way TTU got demolished in the CFP

games of significance:

Texas beats OSU, crazy comeback, I think Texas vaults to #1 and OSU falls to #4.

Heavy favorite, Oklahoma goes into the big house and meets Deliverance, the movie! They were favored and like many Oklahoma teams of past, they put up a ton of points and allow a ton but today MU stopped them cold. So could an unrated #27 MU leap #14 BYU and where will #11 Ok fall to?

#6 Oregon goes into OSU and gets beat down for the second week (yes, they beat BSU but they earned that win about as much as Michigan’s win over WMU. I am going to guess they fall hard and BYU moves up a spot.

This is all a good case to have not voting until the 4th or 5th week when teams work out their early challenges. BYU should vault to # 5. How about that!

That is a good point. What’s going on here…did you switch bodies with McKay?

Finally, BYU is #11 on the AP (the very same rank as we ended last year) as I have been pointing to, the Big 12 gets bagged on by the SEC-Big 10 run CFP. With the most talent returning of any D1 team, BYU should of started inside the top 10 to begin the year, instead we had to endure a #14 and outside looking in the CFP, as usual.

Brutal drop for both Ok and Oregon. yikes. OK fell from #11 to #24…that’s 13 spots over 1 game. The Oregon loss was even worse, #6 Oregon fell to #21, 15 spots. just brutal. Meanwhile; BYU had the highest movement up the charts of anyone, up 4 spots to #11, did not see that coming.

you have a point…as a counter weight, everyone is talking about Bear and BYU being a CFP playoff team, so the ranking of #11 is a tasty surprise.

How can we have moved up four spots, and how is everyone talking about BYU as a playoff team? We took a knee with a minute left instead of trying to impress the committee.

I mean, from what you guys were saying, that just can’t happen, right? We can’t be classy and respectful to opponents in victory and expect that, right?

The CFP looks at the top 6-8 spots for consideration; BYU is currently #11. Teams move up because they beat good teams or demolish lesser teams like BYU did to Utah Tech (no, they did not need to run the score, it was the natural effect of one team being totally overwhelmed).

Arizona wasn’t overwhelmed. Let’s not get too out in front. It’s just the 2nd game.

Who said anything about Arizona being overwhelmed? I didn’t!

Isaid BYU went up in the polls because they beat agood team.
