BYU beats Wisc and the refs

1 Demin was a monster out there, just throwing that out there. Those 3s, I’ve got chills.

2 Jim will appreciate this: The reffing was so one sided in the 1st half, they had to call a few in the 2nd just to make it look like they were fair but boy I got tired of those blatantly one sided calls. They were from the big 10 and the big east, CRIMINAL! (per coach Linehan).
A Tec on Mag for pointing to the scoreboard (KY was caught on the hot mic asking if you could call a T on such a call). 2nd, Player falls in front of Hall, gets bailed out with a whistle. How many times did Tonje grab or kick out or just fall to get an extra FT? I appreciate that Demin had had enough of Blackwell, and shoved him back. Keba has got to keep it under control, these actors from Wisc were out to win emmys.

3 BYU wins the rebounding battle

4 And the FT battle. So Wisc goes to the line 23-29, roughly double of BYU’s 15-16, BYU beat Wisc at their own game shooting a scorching 94% at the Line.

5 The reason why Knell was out there in the last 3 minutes was because Baker was ejected
Dawson Baker ejection, explained: BYU guard gets tossed from second round game against Wisconsin
He will be available for the next game.

6 Keba was a force inside and on D…Those blocks have to be demoralizing.

7 Richie Saunders is playing his way to a ALL NCAA 1st team award. Love those Tots!

8 Blackwell and Tonje had all the tricks to draw fouls, I don’t respect them. Tonje is probably the most complete offensive player we will see in the big dance

9 But my MVP has to go to Mag on D and Saunders on O…these guys are why we are moving on.

10 Now we wait for Bama or SMC. I am calling for an upset. My bracket has Bama but I have a feeling…

11 Bonus: Big 12 was the big winner today.
NCAA Tournament Round of 32 winners, losers: Big 12 owns the day

Winner: Big 12

The conference went a perfect 3-0 on Saturday, with Houston and Texas advancing to the Sweet 16 along with East Region No. 6 BYU, which defeated No. 3 Wisconsin, 91-89.

That’s already an improvement over last season when only two of the conference’s eight NCAA Tournament teams reached the second weekend. In recent seasons, the Big 12 has had a valid claim to being men’s college basketball’s best conference, and it’s playing like it this year.

Great Recap. For me the big thing is free throws. If we shot our average and they shot theirs, we lose. If Kebe misses free throws, game is in overtime and we were losing momentum.

very true. BYU’s melt down with 3 mins to go is a concern but these coaches are not like the past. When BYU has reoccurring problems, they address it and get results. They will be working on high pressure scenarios. the next 3 games will be exactly that.

There are so many what ifs that occur throughout the entire game that it is difficult to say if this then that and so on. I promised the Hopper I wouldn’t text about the officiating but it got to be so unbearable that I just couldn’t stay silent. I would just text NSA (not saying anything) every time a bad call was made in Wisconsin’s favor. You can ask the Hopper how many times he got a NSA text. There were several bad calls and I don’t think any of them favored BYU. The swallowed whistle on the face/arms hack on Foose right in front of the official was bad and blatantly biased. No way he didn’t see that. The trying to escape a double team defender on the right bumping Baker into the defender on the left resulting in a flagrant 2 and ejection was terrible. The technical on Mag for pointing at the jumbotron? Is that the first ever technical for pointing at a replay? and the tripping, falling down drive when nobody touches you by the academy award nominee for Wisconsin was a bailout blown call as well. Those 4, and yes there were others, proved that the officials had it out for BYU. I know the guard for Wisconsin is a good player but the whistle didn’t need to be blown every time he shot the ball. Tonje shot the same number of free throws as the entire BYU team, 16! Talk about trying to gift a game to the team that didn’t deserve it… BYU outplayed Wisconsin in every facet of the game, in every statistical category except turnovers, and earned the win. Officials had NO business trying to give that game to Wisconsin but they did their best.

There was also the late game no call where the Wisconsin guy grabbed Saunders jersey and pulled him off balance when he was going up for a shot that could have put BYU up by 4 with less than 25 seconds left to play.

I watch a podcast called locked on Big 12 on YouTube and the guy doing the podcast said the officials were former WCC refs and he agreed that the officials did their best to steal the game for Wisconsin.

The blogger is a Baylor fan but pulls for all the conference teams. His name is Drake.

Good thing we won.

The surest way to know an official"knows" he blew a call, is when he tees up a guy for something simple, like pointing at the trimbo tron.

I think Wisconsin player took a course from Viade Divac school of flopping.

have seen that type of flopping since Divac played for Sacramento.

You would think we lost the way you guys are complaining. I’m a fan because I focus on winning the game. Great job BYU!

You’re a fan because you focus on winning the game? Exactly what did you do to focus on winning? The true fan focuses on every aspect of the game. Officiating is a big aspect of every game. If the officials are fair and objective the best team wins. When they aren’t fair and objective the best team can still win but sometimes they don’t and that is a shame for both teams and the game of basketball. In a fair and objectively officiated game the best team ALWAYS wins. That’s just common sense and logic. BYU was fortunate to overcome the Badgers and the officials. It’s not that hard to focus on cheering for BYU AND calling out the officials when they make some blatantly bad calls that have nothing to do with judgement, fairness and objectivity.

In a fair officiated game the best team wins. What does that even mean; best team? Best on paper? Best that specific game? Sometimes teams have an off night. They miss more shots than usual. They are a little slower with reaction time. They abnormally hesitate on passing or shooting. Players aren’t machines and neither are referees. It’s what makes the game great. A perfect game played by imperfect human beings. Improved by many fans and ruined by others. The question is, how do you want to watch the games?

BYU won because they adjusted enough in each area listed above including imperfect referees who are also subject to off nights including emotional reactions in the heat of the battle. Perhaps in the kingdom’s of glory basketball is played and our perfect bodies will see perfect refereeing and play. Might be a bit boring.

If you have to ask this question, then I really have to question your knowledge of basketball and being a fan.

Every true fan understands what it means when talking about “the best team,” as Jim mentioned. Moreover, being a real fan isn’t just about celebrating victories. It’s about analyzing every part of the game, including those moments that could have helped the team improve—yes, that includes officiating.

So, my real question is this: why do you feel the need to dictate how others should be fans?

Based on experience, it’s true that an official might have an off night—but all three at once? Highly unlikely. When even the commentators start discussing the officiating, you know there’s an issue. Many of BYU’s fouls in the second half were frustration fouls, including Baker’s infamous “groin shot.” The constant chirping between Wisconsin and BYU players was another clear indicator that the game was being poorly officiated.

I have to question your ability to understand rhetorical questions. And no, there is no answer to what is meant by “best team” in any of Jim’s remarks. Please explain your definition of best team. And then explain why Jim’s or your definition of a true fan is and why your definition must be the only definition. Narcissism is written all over your post. As an example, Jim’s and your definition includes a must hatred towards officiating or you aren’t a fan. During a couple of hours yesterday I received close to 100 texts of criticism against officials and it wasn’t even BYU playing. And when I refused to get trapped into officiating errors, I’m labeled not a fan of BYU or a fan in general by your standards. I do not have to be a fan by your standard or anyone else’s. I will watch BYU play without having a childish hissy fit over officiating and enjoy it without placing blame of winning or losing on officiating. There are many ways to win regardless of the officiating when teams are able to adjust. Best teams adjust to their competition and the officiating and win.

Now, to non-narcissistic comment on bias officiating. You know that going into a game at the college level and pros how you want to call the game when it comes to what you see as a foul. Whether officials get together and discuss this amongst themselves is up for discussion. I’m sure they do and at halftime. It’s my opinion as a fan that IT DOESN’T MATTER! As a coach, I could guess on how refs will do their jobs by knowing them and I would adjust before tipoff. Then, in the first few minutes evaluate to make any new adjustments with style of play and personnel on the floor. No excuses. There are many other factors that show up when stating best team that game. But adjusting to officiating should be easy to do. And then just win. As a fan, enjoy the game. Complain about fouls and at the same time, don’t let your entire perspective of the game be on the referees where all you see is officiating. You will enjoy the game much more. But don’t tell someone how they should watch games and be fans. That’s narcissistic.

That game felt like a home cooked game for Wisc. Coach Linehan told me that the refs were Big 10 and Big East. Someone wrote that they were WCC refs. IDK but they were either incompetent, WCC or Biased, Big 10. Whatever…just want a fairly called contest, not a Dan Hurley night
Dan Hurley Goes Off After Tourney Exit: ‘They F**ked Us!’

vs. Wisc. BYU was by far the better team. Better stats all around but was hammered by fantom calls, super surprised that they did not call a foul on Mag at the end just because the refs were so one sided.

And people wonder why they can’t get more and good referees. Who honestly would want to be one? I’m waiting for the first Tesla Bots to be used for referees and then players.

I received 100 texts in a span of about 2 hours about how bad the officiating is with all games that were in progress. With many of the texts saying “I’m right.” And “You have to agree with me.” You should text back and forth Thursday with Jim. Narcissist.

Since Baker was ejected from the Wisconsin game, does he have to sit out the first half, like they do in Football?

Not sure what the penalty is for ejections in NCAA basketball.

True, the is a shortage of referees on all levels, the number one reason? Is the behavior of the fans/parents/players where several have been assaulted before/during and after games. But that does not mean we cannot question the calls of the officials. One of the reasons there is a disparity in how calls are made is because in the NCAA each conference sets the standards for calling games. I really wish the NCAA would pool all their officials under them. Let the NCAA set the standards.

Major League Baseball is indeed exploring changes to the strike zone with the introduction of the Automated Ball-Strike System (ABS).

This system uses advanced technology to track pitches and determine whether they are balls or strikes. However, instead of fully replacing human umpires, MLB is testing a “challenge” system. In this setup, the home-plate umpire still makes the initial call, but players can challenge those calls using the ABS technology.

Sounds fun… NOT!

How long will games be with that kind of system? 10 hour baseball games

I agree with you that the referees in each conference call games differently when it comes to physical play and what is allowed. The NBA is allowing some challenges on fouls. Slows the game down but in some cases at the end of games, can prevent some calls made improperly for whatever reason. Mainly do to improper angles they have on the floor assuming a foul occurred.

Imperfect fans, parents, players, coaches demanding perfect referees is a condition we see in many aspects of society. Doctors used to have a “practice.” Now, they get sued over things they never would have 50 years ago. Teachers once were respected by parents. Not so much today. Many teachers today tell their students not to go into teaching because of the politics and threats of lawsuits and stuff.

Referees are people and have to make split second decisions. At the same time they are expected to move the game along at a decent speed. Especially with all the pressure from TV outlets. Advertisers what the viewers to see their products. And, even though refs shouldn’t be affected by the fans, they are just human and can be affected. We as fans need to realize this. Coaches should because they are always on the hot seat to win or be unemployed. I think there can be rules established that will weed out the really bad fans, coaches and players. Why do coaches get to yell at referees? Coaches make bad decisions all the time. Get rid of bad game time coaches. Same with some of the fans that get too vocal at the referees. Back in the days at BYU, students did not boo. Fans did not boo. President Oaks would get on the mic and stop it. Elder Tim Perry was at every game at the half court line first row and he would gesture to stop. Every school could do this.

Now, there are bias officials as well. Certainly we can eliminate them.

Really? you don’t know what that means? It means the team that played the best. If you think that game was officiated fairly, objectively and to the best of their ability by the officials then you haven’t watched many games. If Tanje would have somehow hit a three pointer to win the game at the end Wisconsin fans would have been so happy they would have taken the officials out to dinner afterward. That’s how bad it was.

Did someone else text you? If they did then it is possible that you received 100 texts but only 25 of them were mine and they were all about the BYU game as I was watching the replay doing my best to find a bad call that went against Wisconsin. I tried and even watched replays of possible bad calls and didn’t see any. I saw at least 5 or 6 egregiously bad calls against BYU. That is not objective and honest officiating. Why can’t you just admit it?

Because what I see watching on TV will have nothing to do with the outcome. I can’t do a thing. Neither can you. So, while you harp on the refs 100 times in 2 hours, I watch for how BYU adjusts to everything happening in the game. This includes defense, offense of BYU, and the other team and the referees. See, the “ best team” isn’t just who shoots the best, free throws shooting, turnovers, etc. “Best team” includes the mental responses to adversities during the game. So, while you’re burning up your ulcer over referees, I’m cheering for the team and enjoying the game.

I never watch BYU games live because in my old age I get too upset. If they win I watch the replay. If they lose I just forget about it and move on. I watched this game in its entirety once and didn’t think much about officiating because BYU won and I was ecstatic. I watched most of it a second time and saw at least 4 bad calls, or no calls, favoring Wisconsin None favoring BYU. Fouss got poked in the eye and no call, the T on Mag was absurd, the ejection of Baker was highly questionable and changed the momentum. We are up 11 and have the ball and suddenly a 90% FT shooter is at the line If that call isn’t made BYU wins without all the drama. There was also a no call where Saunders has his Jersey pulled as he is shooting and he is thrown off balance and misses with BYU having a chance to go up by 4 with under 30 seconds left to play. Yep the officiating was one sided. Take away those 4 calls, or no calls,
and BYU wins by double digits. I think there were a few other plays as well but I don’t remember the specifics. I think another one was where Blackwell tripped and Hall gets called for a foul. A bad call but not an unusual call to miss.

Interesting and accurate post by Aro. Funny, those are the exact same calls I was talking about. I honestly watched the replay on CBS Sports last night with an eye as if I were a Wisconsin fan hoping for some justification for all the blatantly bad calls on BYU with some equally or even slightly bad calls on Wisconsin and I saw NONE, ZERO!

That is why I brought it up in the first place. Like I’ve said a million times I just want fair, objective, even officiating. If its good officiating that’s great, if it’s bad officiating I’m okay with that too… as long as it is good and bad for both teams!

That is how I watch the games. I watch with interest in the skill level of the players, in the mechanics of how they shoot, what kind of moves they have, quickness, anticipation, etc. I watch the coaches to see what kinds of plays they run, what their strategies are, how they adjust, etc. and I watch the officials to see if they are fair, balanced and objective in their calls. It’s never going to be perfect but they have a responsibility to be equally fair and objective toward both teams. That is not too much to ask or expect.

If the Hopper wants to sit with the primary president and her sunbeam classes and wave his pom poms while wearing his BYU t-shirt that is fine with me… I guess. I just feel like someone with as much knowledge and experience as he claims to have should see things like the rest of us do and not like a mother of 5 who goes to the game for family night.
