BYU for the win

See my previous comments…They are true and correct

Very well written. The offense did what good offenses do when given good field position. Obviously, not a subpar game.

I’m, gooooood as Jack Black would say. You gave Retzaiff his due. Carry on.

Not saying Retzaiff is the next Hall or Wilson but we all saw the throws in the second. 1st half, Arod was calling STUPID plays on 1st and 2nd downs, we would be sitting on a 3rd and 8, going nowhere fast. BYU was 1 dimensional, zero running game so KSU blitzed on every down, had all the ear marks of a blowout.

I did say that turnovers would determine the game. BYU got 3 TDs and a field goal out of TOs. Take those away and BYU has a loooooooooooooooong night. The BYU lead caused KSU to have to throw (big mistake), KSU QB Johnson was not ready for prime time, blowout.

hopper bragging that AROD is a good OC makes all of us laugh here on cougarfan. He’s not
Got himself fired at Utah, came down here and fell into Wilson and Hall, Arod as never developed HS talent. We have had rent-a-QBs every since and now he’s great??? Hill and the D are great, saving Arod’s butt. As Aro put it:

As I have said leading up to this KSU game. BYU has a great Dfense, Good receivers, a QB that is gettting better by the game but we still have AROD and a Oline that could not get a push leaving our RBs to get hit at line of scrimmage. In the SMU game and the 1st half of the KSU game we all saw it.

We shall see in the Baylor game. They are at home, they will bring their A game. If BYU gets 100yds or better rushing by our RBs, not Retzaiff, that’s cheating…then I will be a buyer

It’s strange that you bring up what makes a great college coach, developing high school talent and not relying on the portal system (rent a player). That’s pretty much what KY is doing with basketball. I guess he’s a bad coach and we can expect a lousy offense and a lot of losses in basketball?

It also seems that you are equating Baylor’s defense with K-st. K-st’s defense was elite according to those prognosticators before the game. I texted Jim saying this could be a long night meaning we may not score much because of K-st’s defense. Our defense was bending but not breaking. Then, things started falling our way on our defense. A-Rod helped out by calling the right plays to score a touchdown before half after or D caused a turnover. Same things in the second half as well. The offense made adjustments and we got some movement on the ground as well. Definitely not a subpar performance against an elite defense.

Baylor will be a tough game for several reasons. At home for Baylor.
Coming down off a big win against K-st.
Nagging injuries.
Early morning game.

I think we can move the ball on Baylor because their defense isn’t as good. Our defense should be able to keep them from scoring much. Depends on the reasons listed above.

I never really watched Retzlaff much last year. I was so unimpressed with the direction the season was taking after Slovis went down I basically quit watching the games until Ok St. I was unimpressed with him based on that game and his sidearm throwing motion. When Bohanon was signed I assumed he would be the starter this year.

What I have seen this year is that Retzlaff has a live arm and good mobility. The tools are there. Hopefully he continues to improve and keeps making good decisions with the ball avoiding turnovers. The sidearm motion doesn’t bother me anymore. Mahomes has a similar throwing motion, and no he isn’t a Mahomes so I hope nobody misreads this comment, all I am saying is that the throwing motion can work just fine.

He is developing and could become real good. I know people will say it can’t happen under Roderick. We will find out.

The o-line pass blocks fine but the run blocking hasn’t been good. Part of the problem may be the inexperienced rbs. Hopefully the run game improves as some of the backs start getting more experience and confidence. Moa looks like a real find. Davis should be a slot receiver. He can’t pick up tough yards. Get him in open space and he could be a game breaker. Haunga and Nawahine have had their moments. Martin and Ropati both appear to be injury prone. They would be the best options if they could stay on the field but some of the backups have shown they can play.

If the o-line can’t get good push against big 12 d-linemen then BYU should use the pass to set up the run. The line seems to protect Retzlaff well so BYU should use the short passing game in lieu of the running game. Retzlaff could use better touch on his short throws. That seems to be a weakness of his. He has the physical tools.

Baylor is a mystery to me at this point. They were on their way to being blown out by Utah and then Rising got injured so that game wasn’t as close as the score would indicate.

They gave up a late Hail Mary to Colorado and it is unclear if Colorado is good. They have beaten a couple of patsies.

The thing that worries me about this one is that BYU has stunk it up in these road games with early starts during the Sitake era. It seems like the team always starts slow in these games and loses to average teams and gets blown out by good teams. I am trying to remember a game they have won in the last 5 years that had a pre-noon starting time. The starting time worries me more than Baylor.

In our game against KSU, we were down to our 3rd string Right Guard (Mitchell’s first start). Apparently, that is a dangerous position to play. :open_mouth:

That may be why the right side of line, was a not doing as well with the running blocking/plays.

Floyd: 100% agree that we have struggled to sustain drives. Why? 3rd down conversion percentage. BYU is 121st of 133 D1 teams in 3rd down %. Take a minute to think about that. We are almost the worst in the entire country, and that INCLUDES two practice games! We fail on 3rd down primarily because ARod calls STUPID plays on 1st and 2nd down, and gives up on 3rd down–constantly throwing behind the sticks or worse, running without purpose.
EXAMPLE:
1st quarter. BYU has a second and 15 at the K State 42. ARod calls a DESIGNED QB zone stretch into the teeth of the D for 1 yard. I was laughing. 3rd and 14–now, at this point BYU had already decided to punt on 4th down. So what do we do? We throw a weird dump off to the RB for 4 yards. THEN WE PUNT! If we were gonna punt on 4th ANYWAY, then on 3rd you THROW DEEP and either A) get a big gain, B) get a PI or defensive holding call, C) throw incomplete, or D) get picked inside the 10, which is as good as the best punt. Those two play calls left me laughing out loud. Neither made a lick of sense. Retzlaff can throw the deep ball, and Roberts, Jojo or Lassiter can go up and get it. ARod lost a prime opportunity there.

Talking about laughing! 38-9 win over #13 and you pick one play not knowing if maybe they did call for a longer pass play and the RB was a safety valve option incase of a blitz in which they did. Did I mention 4-0 so far?

Lets talk about that punt return. It was sort of a reflection of the basic feel of the game. I am not a huge fan of BYU’s punt returner. I think he is wreckless, makes poor decisions and I’m nervous every time he looks to field a punt because it doesn’t look like he knows how to catch a punt.

This is exactly what happened on that play. He misjudged the flight of the ball at the 20, ran backward to get it inside the 10, fortunately picked it up about the 5 and ran back to the 2 or 3 yard line before running for his life and finding a K State team that was alreay in semi shock mode at what had happened to that point in the game and then couldn’t catch him as he went the distance.

Totally fortunate and absolutely lucky in so many ways.

Am I happy? Yes, very much so. It was just another incredibly exciting play that added to a memorable game full of amazing plays.

I have to give him some credit here for a change. He probably called his best game so far this season. Perhaps it looked better because of the fortunate results of certain plays but overall I was not as frustrated by his choice of plays like the last 3 games. It was better.

The reason why he eventually picked up the ball at the 5 was because he had touched it earlier. He had no choice. He had a choice to either go down at the 5 or run. I’m glad he ran. Then, afterwards, he was totally gassed, went blank and then puked!

You don’t need to mention it, we all know. Larimer brings up a good point and it is okay to make it even if the team is 4-0. That is how you keep getting better, by looking at what you are doing that isn’t working and find a way to make it better. I guarantee you every big time program handles a 4-0 start the same way… what can we do to get better, where did we make mistakes, etc. You continue to make excuses for the BYU’s weaknesses. The rest of us try to find answers and ways to improve. If you don’t see this then you should try looking deeper.

BYU has a very good defense and an average offense right now. If that average offense can keep from making turnovers I think BYU has a chance to be in every game. Also, if Retzlaff continues to improve by making good decisions and not trying to do too much that will be a positive as well. The OC still makes me uncomfortable but he was better this game so that is a plus. Nobody thought they would be 4-0 at this point. I am ecstatic but there are a lot of games left so lets try and see how they can improve.

Totally agree. People look at the low yardage we had. But, when you only run 48 total plays what would we expect? Also, K-st had a great defense as well going into that game. They still did well except they couldn’t keep us from scoring those 3 touch downs off of mostly turnovers. That’s because A-rod did a good job with the 4th and 5th string RBs and a 3rd string right tackle I believe Floyd mentioned.

Yes, poor judgement that ultimately turned for good result. That doesn’t happen 99 times out of 100.

You’re giving him too much credit. He called a better game but he was still weak in several series. With the amount of experience he has I think we can expect better. Hopefully he doesn’t pull some of the nonsense like he did the second half of the season last year.

Larimer and others only point is to fire A-rod now. So, he finds something obscure in a 38-9 blowout of a top 15 team to complain about. I agree we still need to improve. But, to keep harping on A-rod after that drubbing of K-st is unnecessary.

We really didn’t have several series of long potential drives. K-st had the ball most of the 1st half and only scored 6 points. Also, K-st was a top defensive team as well. Putting up 24 points on them was a great thing even with short fields.

Agree but it would have been nice to see some sustained drives and 3rd down conversions. Those are glaring weaknesses in spite of the big win. I gave A Rod some credit but I’m still holding my breath. I saw improvement but not enough in some key aspects of the game to give him an A rating. Get my drift?

3rd downs had been a problem for BYU for a long time except during the Covid years. We really need healthy RBs to do better. I think after this last game, maybe we will see more confidence in the RBs even without LJ Martin. I wasn’t all that hot on Ropati anyways.
