BYU for the win

1 BYU’s D came alive with a minute to go in the half. I have seen maybe two other games where we were dominated badly and flipped the switch (SMU in the Holliday bowl). That juiced the O to play inspired ball as well. Game over… 39 Seconds Changed the Game in BYU’s Dominant Victory Over No. 13 Kansas State (msn.com)

2 The Crowd, at least 5 clock penalties were caused because of the noise. The 1st time, it cost KSU a touchdown. Saved BYU on several possessions.

3 Turnovers.
BYU uses smoke and mirrors to upset No. 13 Kansas State – Deseret News
BYU had 135 yds at the half and if you took the 2 big plays out of 1st half, we would have less then 80 total yds generated by our O. That is how bad things were. We couldn’t run on them, we couldn’t pass then Cougar safety Tommy Prassas scores on a fumble recovery and the flood gates open.

4 The stars came out to play…Batty’s interception after a Kelly QB whack on KSU’s Johnson absolutely shell shocked their star QB…he was NOT the same for the rest of the game.

5 Retzaiff played a great game once he loosened up. I know some don’t like him but the dude can sling it. That throw to Roberts to go up 17-6 at the end of the half was a thing that gets you drafted.

6 4 plays changed the game. 2 at the half and then to start the 2nd, LBer Taggert picks off Johnson again and Retzaiff hits Lassiter, 24-6. Then KSU is 3 and out (now under strict rules…do not throw the ball) and on a blown punt return, Kingston runs 140 yds to a TD and blows chunks later on the bench. great camera work! But in a span of 2 total minutes to end the half and to start the 2nd half, BYU is in 100% total control of a game KSU 31-6, game over.

7 Somewhere at this point, the announcers said BYU has a total of 180 yds on O and leads by 25 pts. Jay Hill and Gifford (cause BYU has some serious DBs) told us to believe, the D is for REAL. I text Tom Larimer and he text’s back…BYU’s D has like 200 yds

8 Props to our Safeties, They saved us on 3 sure TDs that I count, open field, stops on Johnson and KSU’s star RB Gibbins.

9 On the road…Late night…the crowd (if you were there, you lost hearing, seriously…and rattling their star, Avery Johnson = BLowOut!

10 BYU will jump 10 spots into the top 25 but this game flipped BYU’s season. Now @Baylor and Zona at home look realistic

Odds will change greatly after this blowout!!!

Chime in if I missed anything

We also have to thank KSU for it’s run game. The game ended before midnight and the sabbath.

I had a deep sense of foreboding going into this game last night. I figured our unblemished record this season was going to crash and burn in a major way. Boy was I wrong! I told my brother before the game it will take a miracle to beat Kansas St. tonight. We witnessed a miracle and I’m a believer! Our defense is top-notch and will make every game winnable. Offense took care of the ball and the result was a blowout. It was a great night to be a Cougar!

We all did. On paper, both sides of the ball, KSU was better and in a neutral setting, they would win. Take away the 4 big plays, BYU could of still won…who am I kidding, KSU would of mopped the floor with BYU but True Soph, Johnson got worked by Jay Hill and the star studded D of Kelly, Batty, DBs and Safeties. Buzzzzzz saw

ESPN FPI Predicts BYU Football at Baylor, Updates BYU’s Projected Win Total (msn.com)

This is just NUTS!!!
BYU went from favored to win just 2 games, (Zona and Houston) to 5 remaining games. Road game vs. Baylor will tell us just about everything

I thought KS game would tell us everything. The key going forward is for the players to stay humble and play one game at a time.

After giving thought this time, my take on the win is the offense perfectly complimented the defense. Their defense broke down in the 2nd half and our run game improved. In the Big12 that is going to happen in most of the games. Staying healthy is the key, again.

Three take aways

  1. Jay Hill is awesome. I can’t believe how much he turned our defense around in one year. Our defense is stellar and the games are fun to watch.
  2. Our offense is subpar.
  3. My son-in-law a red through and through Utah fan. Made a comparison to Utah when they joined the Pac-12. He said our defense was so good it would score as much as their offense. I’m going to have to agree with him that’s exactly where we’re at. A great defense that can help us win games, with an offense who can barely score.

Our offense scored 24 points. Not subpar. KS defense is great. Yet 24 points and complemented our defense greatness. Our offense wore down their defense and you saw our young inexperienced RBs doing well in the 4th quarter.

your son in law is very astute.

Our Oline still scares me. For the first half basically, KSU got 5 yards on every down. BYU got zero push and had many 3 and outs.
The 2nd half, it’s like our Oline figured out we would score with or without them and they came alive with Moa busting one tackle, sometimes two or more. He was unstoppable. KSU is ranked #1 in the league vs. the run and we flipped the switch.

2 Retzaiff needs props. He did not panic, he played nearly a perfect game considering the challenges of …the Oline.

Baylor gonna be a challenge

The O line is fine. Retzlaff had plenty of time to throw. The backs had holes but it took a few quarters of play to find them. KS has a great defense. We stuck with everything until the defense broke the the KS offense.

how many of those points were because the defense setup the offense with a short field? two, both were interception (batty and target).

in fact, the offense had short field position on all of their touchdowns, the longest being 6plays for 38 yards.

so how is the fact that the offense could not drive the length of the field to score not considered subpar?

It took them time to find the holes? Do you really believe that?

Tisa man handled our Oline in the first half. that is a fact, our RB’s could not find the holes because oline did not create them in the first half.

Yep! The offense complemented the defense perfectly with 24 points. Great play calling by
A-Rod. That is not subpar. This was a total team victory. You act as if we lost 38-9

stil doesn’t mean they aren’t subpar. they still struggle moving the ball downfield.

I don’t know what you want them to do. They scored 24 points on only 48 plays. Kansas State scored 9 points on 72 plays. The average starting posit was the 44 yard line. They did exactly what was needed being complementary with the defense. Great job Retzlaff (15-21) and A-Rod for getting those 24 points against a great defense.

Sorry for those who hate A-Rod but great game everyone players and coaches. Lousy game for those who want him to fail and had no faith in BYU to do what they did. All the armchair QBs and Coaches before the game can go cheer Utah.
Outstanding game #22 BYU!

Hold on there a minute…

He’s going to have to do a LOT more to even sniff a chance at being drafted. When he can accurately hit wide open receivers under little or no pressure then he is STARTING to look like a potential draft pick. Notice how I said starting and potential.

The rest of your take was pretty good.

I’m going to bring you back down to earth again… He played a good game because his decision making has improved and he didn’t commit any turnovers. Chalk that up to being fortunate a couple of times and better decision making. He had a good game.

This is a bit of a jaded or warped perspective. The offense didn’t do much but thanks to the defense they were given multiple opportunities and capitalized on some of them. Look at the total yards gained, far less than KSU. How do you explain that? The offense couldn’t sustain drives and the defense got seriouis when they needed to.

Again, because of the short fields the defense gave BYU offense, they only ran 48 plays and scored 24 points. They did what they were supposed to do. KS ran 72 plays so of course they had greater opportunity to get more yards. The offense played great against a great defense. 24 points. They were a great complement to the defense.

see my previous comments

I am going to play the wishy washy moderate in this debate. The offense scored a touchdown every time the defense gave them a short field. Once when the defense stopped K St on fourth down on the K St 38 and twice about 30 yards away after interceptions. That’s good you have to cash in on the breaks and the offense did that with touchdowns every time they were given a short field. They had one good drive for 62 yards and got a field goal. The rest of the time they didn’t do much but they played error free football. No turnovers and only one penalty for an intentional delay of game when they were going to punt about 40 yards from the K St end zone.

The offense managed the game well and didn’t get BYU beaten with turnovers and penalties. They did what they needed to do. Offenses often settle for field goals when the defense gives them a short field. BYU got a TD every time. I would say the offense played well considering the type of game it was and never gave K St momentum by turning the ball over and stalling their scoring drives with penalties.

They will undoubtedly need to play better if they meet a hot offense that is moving the ball and scoring TDs against our defense. I think the offense played well, not outstanding, but well enough, and they didn’t waste what the defense gave them.

The third part of the game, special teams, BYU was outstanding. They downed several punts inside the 10, were perfect on PATs and FGs, and of course there was the punt return.
