Looks like the coaching staff read my posts about Catching’s hitch in his shot. He’s getting his feet square under him so far.
Knell finally made a contribution!!
Demin adjusting to much better opponent.
Hall not finding his game yet
But- they’re doing ok- hanging in there

“A lot of fans made the trip down from Provo”
They never get it’s local members
Exactly and like most of us here we understand the BYU fan base. There is a certain jumpy poster that does not. He would be in the camp that the fans who love BYU basketball follow the team and that the crowd there in San Diego was that group.
The rest of us understand, and you could see it in the crowd that was shown, that a good portion of BYU fans are families and other groups that support BYU because they are the athletic arm of the church. I’ve said it before that I love it and it definitely makes us unique. Unfortunately some hoppy, jumpy insect like fans don’t quite understand it yet. It’s a work in progress.
As far as the game goes, turnovers hurt and Hall needs to ramp up quickly. Also, I think a couple of those refs need to go to a clinic on the violation called travelling. A couple of travels that weren’t called in key moments of the game went in favor of Ole Miss and helped them get to OT and eventually win the game.
Okay, explain to us all how you could look into the crowd while watching on TV that the reason most of the BYU fans were only there because they are members of the Church. Go ahead. Explain in detail. Go ahead.
Yes, as in football, turnovers win games. The 10 point spread of points scored on turnovers stopped us from winning by 10 points in regulation. So did our shooting percentage from 2’s and 3’s in the 2nd half.
Our defense lagged in the 2nd half as well. We let them drive into the paint too much.
A couple of maybe traveling calls have no bearing on the loss. We also got away with some traveling as well. Fouss got a way with a couple of his own. Focus on the things we can do better so that you can see the big picture during games.
That’s what it will take for you to understand. A detailed explanation. Unfortunately I don’t have the time nor the energy to do that for you EVERY time you don’t understand. I think if you became more aware of your surroundings, particularly when you attend a BYU athletic contest in person, you might begin to understand. It takes time and experience (something you have) and being aware of those around you (something you apparently don’t have) in order to completely understand what is going on.
I think this carries over into analyzing games as well. I see the entire picture and am able to understand and explain what is going on in a particular game. You see a few things but miss a lot of it and while your analysis is spot on some of the time, you miss a lot of the nuances and other aspects of what is happening and therefore need someone like me to explain all the stuff you miss.
Hope that helps a little.
Been to a lot of BYU games in Texas, Midwest including ND. Yes there are fans from Provo, but the bulk were locals - mostly within 100 miles of the venue. How do I know? talked to many of them around me, was talked up in the surrounding wards before the game. And, just look at the Byu supporters at the BBall game yesterday. Fam-i-lies!. That spells locals.
This isn’t to hard to figure out. Also, the home team fans were always surprised that we lived in the area. “You’re not from Utah?”
This issue is kinda a “Duh”.
You couldn’t answer it. Old Chinese proverb, more words count less.
You still didn’t answer the question. How many of those fans went to BYU and didn’t? Alumni do a good job getting people to games. My first year coaching at a Catholic high school, I got the JV and varsity coach to drive down to San Diego for a BYU vs SDSU game. Neither were members of our Church. I introduced them to Frank Arnold before the game and they cheered for BYU. Being a member doesn’t mean you are a BYU fan or not. Certainly not Mr which was Jim’s accusation to begin with.
See what I mean pmac?
It is a thankless job but somebody has to do it.
I feel like it is futile at times but I hold out hope and keep trying. As hard as I try to explain it, the Hopper refuses to understand. A large percentage of fans, especially those you see at BYU games out of state (and a lot in state) are there rooting for BYU because they are members of the church and want to support the Cougars because it is the LDS church. It’s okay and I love it. Just like pmac said… FAM-I-LIES. Parents that hope to send their kids to BYU, people who love the gospel and see this as a way to show it by supporting the church schools teams.
I really can’t believe you don’t understand that Hopper. You just aren’t paying attention and you don’t have to prove it by relating a missionary story from your past. Yes, there are members of the church who are fans of other schools but that is beside the point.
To support what you are saying Jim. These are known facts of why many are fans of BYU (especially when they travel).
- Religious Affiliation: BYU is deeply rooted in LDS values and teachings, making it a natural choice for members of the church to support.
- Community and Identity: Supporting BYU fosters a sense of community and shared identity among LDS members.
- Family Tradition: Many families have a history of attending or supporting BYU, creating a tradition passed down through generations.
- Moral Standards: BYU’s honor code and emphasis on moral standards resonate with LDS beliefs, making it an appealing institution to support.
It’s a blend of faith, tradition, and community that makes BYU a beloved institution among LDS people.
Does that make it clearer?
I have a friend that is a season ticket holder for 43 years and yet, he never attended BYU. The above reasons is the reason he loves BYU and the fact that they pass the ball a lot (or did).
Your friend, does he live in the Provo-Orem area? He loves football and there BYU is. Could be that simple. At the 1980 Holiday, there was a guy sitting next to me from Texas. I asked him if he’s an SMU fan. He said no. So, you are a BYU fan? He said no. Why did you come to this game? I just like good football.
Jim’s original statement was that being a member of the Church is why I support BYU. That is it my reason. I’m true to my school.
You are exactly right Floyd. That does make it clear. Where did you get this information? It explains exactly what I have been trying to do. I actually think much of what I said is just being clarified by what you posted here.
What are the odds that the Hopper acknowledges it and posts something like “now I understand, thank you Floyd for helping me” I’ll give a million to one that he does. This is going to be interesting.
Nope, wrong again. I said it was one of the main reasons, not the only one. I then went on to extrapolate that by saying that there are a large number of BYU fans that don’t really understand the games but they are there because they are members of the church and support the school in that way. You get so confused… and instead of trying to understand you take off on a tangent and start arguing. It’s not conducive to being a member of the church and a BYU fan.
Well, I think he just might Captain Obvious. As a season ticket holder the odds are pretty good he lives within 50 miles of Provo and more likely within 5 or 10 but I’ll wait for Floyd to say.
Being a member isn’t the greatest reason. It has no bearing. Is that plain enough?
So the fact that you are a member of the church has absolutely nothing to do with being a BYU fan… is that what you are saying? You are a rare breed Hopper but that is something we’ve always known on this board.
No, he was born in California and raised in a small town called Hunter near SLC.
He does love Football, but he could have gone to the Utah games because they are closer.
He loves BYU because of the type of football that they play, they represent the faith that he loves, and they are a good example to others. Pretty much what I said originally.
He pretty much dislike Utah for the same reason I do (we had an experience while in high school at a Utah game performing with a band).
I’ve said it several times.
2 of his 3 reasons are directly related to being a member of the church. Also, he lives within 50 miles of Provo. You lose Hopper.
He Ives in the area. I lived 50 miles fro UCLA and USC. So, you are wrong again.
