BYU vs. SIU, blowout

1 ESPN+ sucks, let’s just get that outta the way. Big 16 needs its own network!

2 Either SIU lost a whole lot of talent or BYU is much improved in all the areas that killed us last season. Both lines looked explosive. After reading Jay Drews critique, I come away almost depressed
Newly minted starting QB Jake Retzlaff leads BYU past SIU – Deseret News

3 The Oline got big pushes on rushing all night, like 5 yard pushes.

4 The QB drama has been settled. Retziaff had a 196 QB rating, hitting 10 different receivers having a career night of 348 yds. Yes, he had 2 TD throws he wanted back but, Man, this guy looks like John Beck is a genius.

5 Our running game was unstoppable. The Oline, just blew open holes (that is why I wonder if SIU is way down on talent?) and Martin/Ropati got new downs any time we wanted. Martin in particular was special with 2 TDs on the night.

6 With Lasiter sitting out for a NCAA paperwork issue, Roberts showed his WR1 acumen. 10 catches for 108 yds. wow

7 The Dline stomped on SIU to the point that only they’re QB, Williams elite running, was the only thing that got SIU into the endzone

8 overall, BYU did whatever they wanted to a FUA opponent. SMU in Dallas on Friday night will have a big say in who BYU really is.

9 BYU will be solid in all of our key talent areas:
QB question is settled, Check!
Martin and reconstructed Ropoti at running backs, Check
O and Dline vastly improved, Check
DBs as promised, Check
Line Backers, very good with exception of a wide open pick, Check
Special teams…not so special

10 am I encouraged? 100%. This team is light years ahead of the BYU 14-0 SUU game we witnessed last year. Debby Downer, Jay Drew, threw dirt on our opener, poking holes everywhere. I have a vastly different take…
BYU football: How the Cougars earned a 41-13 season-opening win – Deseret News
BYU had just 3 penalties all night for 15 yards. QB play looked crisp, receivers, outside of newly converted TE, Hill, looked solid. Oline moved SIU at will. SIU could not pass on us, thank you DBs, Got to big QB sacks, Thank you Bagnah

Ready for SMU

There’s a lot of point that are true. I’d say though, the RBs will study film and see where they missed some big holes to run in. The line pushed hard but we only gained 3.8 yards per carry. Not good enough.

Jim and I were texting back and forth and noticed Retzlaff throws falling backwards too much. Beck taught him that? Maybe those two passes that went way over the heads of receivers was because of poor mechanics. He’s no Mahomes.

Hill looked bad as a TE. He looked slow and dropped passes. Why do you say he looked good?

I heard on the TV last night that ARod had a “package” devised for Bohannan to run.

When Bohanan heard about it, he told the coach not to do that because it would interrupt Retzlaff flow for the game, he earned the #1 spot fairly, let him run the offense.

Because of this type of selflessness, I can see why Bohanan was selected as a captain for the team. Very unselfish of him to support Retzlaff.

One other thing, Retzlaff notice the footwork of Bohanan, and asked him about it. While competing for the starting job, Bohanan helped Retzlaff improve his foot work, which may have cost him the starting position.

This was report on the BYU pre-game show.

Jim and I noticed that he was throwing off his back foot? Is that correct footwork?

Sometimes, old habits are hard to fix, but for the most part, he was a lot more sound in his mechanics. Beck helped him with a lot of the issues he had last year.

I know that one pass was on a back foot (Retzlaff pitched the guy, who then the guy threw it) that turned out to be a pretty good play, although the mechanics of throw was totally “ugly”.

Jim texted me about it. Most of his throws looked like Mahomes. But he’s not Mahomes. Is that the new throwing motion?

You need to take a reading comprehension class.

meaning, “Everyone but TE Hill looked solid.” In English…The Keanu Hill experiment — the highly successful receiver is now a tight end — didn’t start well, as the Texan caught just one pass, for 7 yards on five targets. per Jay Drew.

I am satisfied with the game and result, for now. I want to see how they fare against real competition. I watched Wyoming vs. ASU and they looked terrible. Yes, it was first game jitters and playing in 95 degree heat at 10 pm but they looked really bad.

I don’t believe Retzlaff is as good as he potentially looked. He missed a lot of throws and I’m not sure his mechanics are solid. I get that Beck worked with him but he doesn’t step into his throws so a lot of those are off target. Roberts catches on some mediocre throws kept his rating up. Yes, he looked good but not great or “crisp”. I will reserve that label for a different game against better competition.

I think the defense looked better, but their inability to contain the QB generally was not good. He should have been given more attention, ran freely on many plays designed or not. They needed to keep a LB assigned to him.

It was a good start for the team. Lets see how things go against a better team, which is pretty much everyone except maybe Houston, from here on out.

Whyoming would fit In Houston’s category after yesterday. A couple others not so good either. And, we can’t really tell how good others are because of the teams they played.
If we can clean up some things, we should be ready for SMU. Hopefully, not another holy bowl and we win by double digits. Like, 45 - 21.

Jim, I was reading this article and thought of your comment.

“(Retzlaff) gets stuck on his back foot often,” Doman said. “He has that unorthodox throwing motion, which I don’t think you are ever going to take away from him. It’s kind of his thing. A lot of NFL guys are doing that, but you need to be very careful because it gets your footwork in bad position, and I think with some of the throws he missed his feet were bad. They were out of position, and he was on his back foot.”

Then Doman said: “Retzlaff focused on his footing more intently in the second half against Southern Illinois and it remains a point of emphasis in practice.”

I am wondering how much Bohanan had to do with Jake focusing on the footwork? It was mentioned during the pregame that Bohanan was working with Jake and his footwork.
BYU football: What Brandon Doman thought of Jake Retzlaff’s game – Deseret News

I’ve mentioned Mahomes several times throwing off his back foot. However, Retzlaff threw for 66.6%. Hard to complain about that.

Mahomes you say???
hahahahahhahahahaahahhhahahahahahahahahahahahhahhhahhahahhahahahahhahaahaahahahahahhhaahhaahhahaahahahahahhhahhahahhahahhaahahaahaahahhhahhhahahhhaahhhhhhhhhhhhh…my gut hurts

Yep! He throws off his back foot. Haven’t you ever noticed?

Amend the comment to "Yep! He throws off his back foot, at times!. then you would be more accurate in your statement.

if you goggle you would find this to be the truth:
Patrick Mahomes is known for his unique and often unconventional throwing techniques, including throwing off his back foot. While he doesn’t throw off his back foot “most of the time, he does use this technique frequently, especially when he’s under pressure or needs to make a quick, off-balance throw

Contradictory statement. “Most of the time” he doesn’t. Then, “frequently does” throw off his back foot. He does it a lot and so does Retzlaff.

as always, you completely miss the point…Mahomes is the Goat. Comparing Retziaff to Mahomes would be someone saying, “Dillan Brooks plays in the NBA, therefore he is as good as Micheal Jordon.”

You assumed this. I was just referencing that more QBs are throwing on their back foot since Mahomes is doing it. I wasn’t comparing abilities with Mahomes.

I am very hesitant to get too excited about beating a completely overmatched opponent. BUT—

  1. Retzlaff looked good throwing downfield.
  2. Will he have time to do it against FBS defenses?
  3. Defense looks faster overall than last year, but again it was against a lower division opponent.
  4. Ropati and LJM both look fast and tough. I think they can both be very effective.
  5. IIRC, Epps, Hill and Kingston each had uncontested drops. That’s OK vs the JV team but not when we play the varsity squad.
  6. Hoping to see Ropati used in the passing game. We all saw two years ago what he can do in the open field.
  7. LB looked good overall but still too many guys dropping too deep leaving those giant holes for the QB to run through.

I’m surprised Kingston is still listed as kick returner. Missing one, okay. But 4 or 5?

Not contradictory at all. More of a reading comprehension issue. The writer wrote " he does use this technique frequently , especially when he’s under pressure or needs to make a quick, off-balance throw.

Frequently refers to when he is under pressure or needs to make a quick off balance throw. He isn’t doing that most of the time so he isn’t frequently throwing off his back foot… ONLY WHEN HE IS IN THOSE SPECIFIC SITUATIONS MENTIONED AND EVEN THEN IT ISN’T EVERY TIME. SO IT IS NOT FREQUENTLY OVERALL, JUST IN THOSE SITUATIONS.
