BYU wins a nail biter vs. OSU

1 BYU needed a whole lot of luck to win that game…

2 Retzaiff reverted back to crazy Retzaiff to start the game. Trying to do way too much, throwing stupid low % pressured throws, giving OSU the lead and giving them hope. That Ropati interception…It was as if BYU was trying to lose the game on purpose. This game should not have been within 3 TDs

3 Our Defense was just as guilty. Trying too hard to get to the QB when we should of played sound run defense. We made their starter QB, Rangal into a all star running back until he went out with a broken clavicle, then, their NON-running QB, Bowman gets 3 1st downs, all because of poor play calling.

4 Gundy and OSU are far too good to have a bye week to prepare-for BYU to come out and stink it up like we did for the 1st half. Gordon would of had 300 yds rushing if he had not gotten injured. 9-13 third down conversions and 2-2 fourth downs says BYU’s D was playing on past accolades.

5 BYU’s running finally showed up! 255 is wow numbers! Martin had himself a monster game. Ropati averaged 7.8 ypc and Retzaiff gained 9 ypc and 81 yds rushing after a pathetic passing game, but there is a thing called redemption. more on that later…

6 Roberts is a 1st down machine. Lassiter freak night and game saver!

7 The closing speed of Kelly is crazy, Taggert continues to lead the team in D tackles and Glasker closed the Gordon show twice!

8 OSU only punted the ball once all night. That Gundy wrinkle of his QBs faking a Gordon option then running the ball KILLED BYU all night long. With all their injuries, missing his 2 best linebackers, Gundy came within a play of beating BYU @BYUshould of never been close.

9 Ratzaiff to save the day. That QB run and shift to extend the play got him 27 yds, then his bomb to Lassifer was a killer. That dude will make you crazy and he will win for you. Ratzaiff, I hate/Love you, what else is there to say.

10 we pull this shLt on a good team, BYU losses by 20

I didn’t see a bad team playing us at all. Well prepared and ran their offense well. Except for a couple of teams, they are all capable of winning games. But, so are we. Defense looked like they lost that humility and weren’t ready. Who is #28 on defense? His tackling Gordon was atrocious! He just bounced off Gordon like a flea.

Disappointed in the defense and they didn’t seem to make adjustments. UCF will kill us running the ball :football: if they don’t figure it out by next Saturday. First time all year I can honestly say the offense won this game. Once again, play calling costs us points with an Ill-conceived running back pass. No need when we were moving the ball so well and the throw was just horrible. Important game next week, because if we beat UCF on the road, we have a good shot at beating Utah, who isn’t scoring points and losing. UCF qb is a big dude but not lightning quick, so a well planned and executed defensive scheme should be effective.

100%. Rapati won’t be throwing a duck again. Both Retzaiff and Ropati have watched their film 10 times by now…Better to eat it then throw under pressure.

UCF is favored by 4…I like it, BYU plays better when they feel slighted.

It seems like those who think this may realize how even each team is in this league that they go for the home team.

Stop the run is going to be key. BYU defense had a problem with OSU run game. Looked like last year. Don’t feel great about this next game in Florida, but this is a team of surprises, so hoping to be on a roll going into SLC

No kidding about stopping the run. UCF rushed for over 300 yards against one of the best run defenses in the country (ISU).

It is interesting that ISU beat UCF by the same score 38-35 as BYU beat Ok St. They had a long drive and scored with about 30 seconds left. Maybe ISU and BYU are destined to meet in the BIG 12 title game. Neither was respected much in the pre-season. I am not predicting anything because a lot could happen in the last 5 games. Whittingham is a great coach and Utah has a history of figuring things out when they are down. I hope they don’t before we play them, but first things first. UCF is a very dangerous team just like Ok St. They haven’t met expectations this year but showed how good they can be against ISU.

PRO No. 2: The BYU defense has some serious issues.

There are some things going on with the defense that concern me. Tackling in the past two games has been subpar. The constant substitutions seem to put experienced starters on the sideline and freshmen on the field in key situations. The way the Cougars defended the read option was atrocious. Kalani Sitake said there was some “hero ball” going on where guys were trying to do too much instead of their 1/11th and that sound right.

Then there’s BYU’s late down performance: Arizona was 11 of 19 on third downs two weeks ago. Oklahoma State was 9 of 13 on third down and 2 of 2 on fourth down, which means they kept their drives alive on 11 of 13 opportunities. OSU missed a field goal on one of those drives so the Cougar D forced exactly one punt all night long.

I know this group came into Friday’s game No. 1 in pass efficiency defense but sometimes numbers lie. I see what I see. BYU can’t get off the field and it’s going to cost them if they can’t figure out third downs.

uncanny!
get UCF out of the way, then dream!

Who is favoring UCF by 4? I see a Las Vegas spread of -1.5 for BYU.

ESPN gives UCF a 52% chance to win. Vegas shows BYU as a 1.5 point favorite. Looks like a tossup… Doesn’t matter just keep winning.

UCF was very highly regarded in preseason and has a lot of impressive talent.

I see a lot of BYU in Iowa State. Maybe the 2 kind of teams that need to execute on a team basis and not on individual athletic prowess. Assignments are particularly important in the linebacker corp and secondary.

From what little I have seen of UCF, I don’t consider their qb a great passer. I might try some man coverage and constantly put 5 or 6 on the line of scrimmage and attempt to gum things up in the backfield. Of course that being said, they are going to have to tackle well, because missed tackles will result in big gainers. It’s probably the defense Mendenhall would have run-risky-but aggressive

if we didn’t take their starting QB out of the game we would have lost. I think this is why Retzlaff played like he did. he could feel and see that it was going to be on the offenses shoulders to win the game and he got in his head. once the second string guy started to play Retzlaff settled down and played ok.

Great article thank Fish

hold on tight boys because we will probably be white knuckling it the rest of the year.

Not sure losing the QB lost the game for Ok St. Their backup was the starter until the BYU game and he was good until this season. He led them on the 2 drives that got them the lead and I thought he played well, but you could make the argument that if Rangel hadn’t been injured they may have won.

That last BYU drive was the kind of thing we saw from the BYU QB legends of the past like Young against Missouri, Bosco against Pitt and Michigan, John Beck against Utah, Brandon Doman against Utah (twice), Max Hall against Utah, McMahon against SMU. I hope Retzlaff can become the QB some of these other guys were. He has the tools, just needs to be more consistent and avoid the bad throws.

I look at the games that are left and there isn’t one single patsy left. Every one of those teams have shone, this season, that they can play well on a given Saturday.

The only Patsy I’ve seen all year is Wyoming and their animosity towards BYU probably helped them play above themselves. Kansas and Houston should be wins at home the other 3 are really questionable. I felt really great when the offense started carrying their load and the defense was creating turnovers. If the offense has to carry the defense than BYU is probably in a bind. Right now I’m predicting 10-2. A really dominant defense-it could be better

I think you are right. If the defense gets back to the way they were playing, we can go 12-0. If not, 10-2 is more likely. Jay Hill will have our players ready to lock and load! And, tackle better. Our #28 bounce twice off of Gordon. That was embarrassing.

Yep tackling was poor, linebackers have to keep their assignments better. The front 4 or 3 are trying to get to the qb, linebackers have to fill. How they play Saturday will tell us a lot about the rest of the season. On the road against a good sized athletic team. A good indicator of a great compared to a good team!

Did you happen to see FISH that Ludwig stepped down as OC for Utah after the third straight loss?

it will be an interesting game on 11/9

Retzaiff gets into trouble when he loses his mind and tries to do too much. He played best when Sitake made it very clear that he would lose the starting job if he didn’t protect the ball. The prier 3 games, he threw it away or got sacked rather than throw a high risk ball. Thought Retzaiff played a very good 2nd half this past week.

Feels about right.

All good observations: UCF is not a great throwing team. BYU has the best DBs in the conference. just play gap sound football and no turnovers on O, we should be OK

I think I posted on it. The replacement:
‘A very dynamic personality’: What Whittingham says about new interim OC Mike Bajakian

It’s will be Bajakian’s show for the rest of the season — Whittingham says he has “complete autonomy as the play-caller — but Ute fans shouldn’t expect any wholesale changes from Ludwig’s offense. There’s simply no time to implement a different offensive system, so while Bajakian will add some wrinkles, he’ll pretty much be working out of the current offensive playbook.

I think some utah fans thought that Ludwig was trying to have Wilson play like Cam Rising does and it not a natural fit for Wilson,

Issac Wilson is a lot like Retzlaff and being a “gun slinger”, well at least in High School. The kid was a baller.

It will be interesting to see if BYU defense can shock and Awe Wilson. Not seeing much from Utah’s RB’s and/or receivers .
