I am less hard on ARod than the two previous seasons. IF, aRod taps Bear, he may, may I said, have turned a corner and his finally getting past the “we do pretty good for a mid major and that’s good enuf” mentality. It will show that he is much more serious of being a consistently, high high relevant team in the country.
Is it time to put on the blue goggles from 1984? Yes, it did happen more than 40 years ago and yes, I was old enough to remember as I was fresh off a mission and my spirituality was enhanced by blue goggles. I was all over it back then. My age and experience tells me it will NEVER happen again. Too many old cronies still around from that time and too much money involved. There was very little money involved in the process all those years ago.
Remember Magic Johnson signing that astronomical contract in basketball? 25 million for 25 years? That isn’t even half of what a good number of players make in one season now. Inflation and the cost of living have risen but not like the money in professional and college sports.
BYU will NEVER win a football national championship in our lifetime or the lifetime of our kids and grandkids. I love the Cougars but it isn’t going to happen, blue goggles or not.
love it that everyone is getting involved again. put on your blue googles and lets go. 2 1/2 weeks baby.
so loyal cougar podcast had a segment asking the question if arod is to blame for the current qb situation.
My point is we have a top 10 defense. Top 10 special team. if we could have a top 30 offense, we could win the the Big 12 Championship/2nd place with double digit wins and we are in the playoffs. I’ll give BYU a generous 40% chance to get to the B12 champ game. 80% chance to get into the playoffs whether BYU win or lose. For each play playoff game (is there 4 to win it all?) 1st and second games 50%, 3rd game 40% Championship game 40%. = about a 1.3% chance. But here’s the thing, if you do the same thing for a Georgia or Ohio State et al their odds to win the whole thing are not great either. 80% chance to make the playoffs, then 60%, 50%, 50% 50% = 6%.
The stacked deck against a BYU post 1984 until the last year and going forward is by comparison greatly de-stacked. If they win the Big12 or second with 10+ wins and they have a almost level playing field as anyone. It all comes done to the committee placing teams. That’s where the bias stacking will be. No where near the stacking of the last 40 years. That’s not blue googles,it’s the evolution of the process to destack the opportunities to sabatoge a BYU.
it was
who threw this pass and Arod was talking bout
when he said
I’ll feel more comfortable in these blue goggles if
is the QB
I guess it all comes down to the question of which guy you think has the most upside and overall talent…
The guy who grew up in Lehi, was named after a prophet and always wanted to play for BYU but had to settle for Utah State or the guy who played football in Southern California against high level competition, is named after a scary, wild animal and, while originally committing to Stanford, decided that a better program might be BYU currently.
Doesn’t seem that difficult of a decision but it is when you have the bubble mentality…
Floyd is going to love this.
I get a kick out of the national championship talk. I would love it, but 1984 was a perfect storm and then the stinking corrupt power schools made sure nothing like that would happen again. Now BYU is in a 2nd tier power conference. Top tier is the SEC and the Big Ten and they are trying hard to get rid of the ACC and Big Twelve as power conferences, but for the time being if the Cougars can win the Big 12 they at least have a chance.
I may be the oldest guy who posts here regularly. I started following BYU in 1962 at the age of 12. BYU was awful in football and played in a stadium that was on the side of a hill behind where the Richards PE building now stands. It held about 5000 fans and BYU usually won 2 or 3 games and never beat Utah. Lavell changed everything. I remember his first season BYU beat Utah and went 7-4 and everybody was thrilled and hoped that kind of year would be the rule. Of course the Y far exceeded that and now we get these grandiose delusions that BYU can win a national championship. It is possible, but I remember when beating Utah and having a winning season was considered a great year so talk of a national championship kind of tickles me based on my years of following the Cougars.
Super excited for the season. I’m in Oregon so I don’t have as much of a feel for the team as you in Utah. I think our linebackers will be incredible. No true NFL talent but excellent college players. From a distance, I’m hoping Bear is the starter. The USU transfer doesn’t sound very good in games.
7 months?
welcome back!
I’m looking forward to football season as well. It will be my first year in a long time not watching games with my Dad. I’m gonna miss that. I even made the 10+ hour drive to Provo a few times with him on a weekend just to watch a game with my brother too.
I’m hoping for the best but I am realistic as well. BYU isn’t winning any national championships in football any time soon.
I am actually in Texas. Grew up in Orem and attended many BYU football and basketball games until I moved to Texas in 1977.
I might disagree a little about Kelly and Glasker. I think both of them will get drafted.
1984 required the near miss of 1983 (loss to Baylor the only loss), and arguably the previous 4-5 years as well. In other words, simply going undefeated (which is such a perfect storm, as you say, that fans really are delusional to hope for or expect that) isn’t enough. We have to string together several very good seasons to really allow an undefeated season to break through. With a flash in the pan anomaly year, the powers that be will continue to justify it as a fluke from a second tier conference.
I’m mostly commenting on how incredible NFL linebackers. Not tossing shade at our guys. Glasker reminds me of a thicker Aaron Francisco. Tall and rangy. I know they play different positions. I don’t think Glasker is solid enough for the NFL. Talking about rangy safeties, does anyone remember Scott Peterson from the 1980’s teams? I was a teenager then but remember how great he was against the run in particular. He blew up Air Force constantly one of those years - maybe 1984.
I’m a big fan of Jack Kelly. I think he was better than Taggart last year - though both were solid. I think Kelly lacks the speed and quickness to be an NFL player - think of a Max Tooley type. Though Max is still on a practice squad, so give him credit. I am hearing some rumblings from Provo that there is a poly LB who is looking incredible. I can’t remember his name.
zing, ya got me but 11-2 in the big 12, I have to give Arod some props.
I have read the same news. Hillstead can SHREEEEED, Steve Young type speed.
Bear becomes a stud, followed by Lyons…..”Sir, I Beg to Differ” (see what I did there, Fernk?) The recruiting goes sky high, “so you’re sayin’ we have a chance?”, Let’s go….If TCU can be in the final, BYU definitely has a ligit shot of playing for a title again.
Hey Bro, good to see u, tell your lame brother to get postin again…….Also a big fan of Jack Kelly, we’re talkin the same Kelly that explodes on the ball, to me Speed is his secret weapon.
totally agree. As I sum up the offense, everyone knows I would be confident in any of the 3, but as I said in my very 1st quote, “if bear get reps with the1’s, and we see him in the Portland St. game, he’s the starter. I like all of our skill position players, we have stars all along that Offense: Roberts, Ut TE Carson, LT Martin (all 3 of these guys could get dratted)
ARod has reviled how he will play call. He said that Hillstead is light years ahead of last season, has complete understanding of the offense. Then there’s this stud NFL prototype frame with a, ”I’m going to Stanford-scratch that-BYU brain! ARod said Bear would not use the complete playbook until most likely next year, even if he is the starter. Bear got the majority of the reps with the 1s, Hold on.

I do not care where a player comes from, but BYU should get the “best player” they can get regardless of where the player lives. Just because they live in Utah, does not mean they are not great players. There are a lot of great players in Utah High Schools, some of the “best” former players are now playing on Sunday.
I think the key is to identify the “best” athletes and recruit them, even if they live in Utah.
You are growing… that was a good reply. You didn’t get offended, you stayed calm and you delivered your message. Well done. I was poking the bear just to see how it would respond… and to prep you for your next interaction with the Hopper. If you can keep your cool with that one, you will have become a Jedi master. I am not a big star wars geek but that seemed like the best analogy. Anyhow, I am glad you are still here and posting. I know there have been many times in the past where you told us all you were done. Thanks for sticking around.
Here Here! Floyd is a Forum Fan Favorite. And Annoyd Floyd is always welcomed for some good banter! Glad you chimed in.
agreed. I think people put on the beehive googles when it comes to kids that played in Utah. let the best player win and I think he has.
so I was watching some interviews and reading about
to find out more about him. this kid is a different kind of kid then the kids today. he grew up in the mountains with 3 brother on sister, he said his childhood was caveman style, his family is very disciplined and competitive oh and they are all wicked smart. his dad was a marine and ran his house that way. they all played sports all the time and were always competing, his brother
graduated from Stanford in computer science degree in 2.5 years. for those who don’t know Stanford has the #1 and hardest computer science degree in the world.
here are some quotes from him
“Running with power—not sliding out of bounds… I’ve always been taught to finish—get into the end zone.”
what he absorbed from his siblings:
“I think just blindly copying their work ethic and their intelligence…”
“
and have been quizzing each other every night to lean the playbook.”
“My dad’s grandpa, he used to be a fighter pilot… He would always tell my dad, ‘Get over here, Tiger (in a growling voice),’ and my dad always thought that was cool. He named James the fourth Tiger when he had a kid, and then he said, the best one has got to be named
.”
he also trained with Andrew luck and John Beck a felt like he learned a lot from him
“I think I mean I when you when you have four or five, you know, big dudes coming at you, you know, you got to be able to man manipulate your arm angle.”
this kid is very competitive, has the talent, smarts and work ethic to play at this level. we just need to give him time. or as the kids say these days “let him cook”
was not aware of Andrew Luck. Another smart guy!
