Davis Jr. arrest

There are two sides to Cannabis use in America. I have been around it in one form or another most of my life. As a kid, I lived in mexico, it was everywhere. Grew up in a very staunch LDS family and scared daily by a mother who thought it would kill you.

there are two sides to pot use, 1- It is federally against the law and as Floyd pointed out, abuse, addiction and Gateway drugs use.

  1. but here is the other side: Pot can be a blessing in people’s lives, most LDS folks by now have used derivatives such as CBD for anything from sore muscles and injury to full on smoking it to relieve cronic pain. Many cancer patients find it about the only med to use that does not have major side effects.
  2. Millions of people are alive who were former heroin users, trying to stay away from a true killer, Pot fills that void. I blame the medical industry for killing millions by prescribing Oxy or 10 other derivatives’ under different names, and those basterds(Doctors) got paid to prescribe death by pill. My middle son used for 20 years, watched 16 friends, all LDS, die from heroin, never phased him, that is how strong the addiction is. So he will most likely use for the rest of his life. We lost most of our valued processions to his habit, Fly rods that had been around the world with me, my wife’s wedding ring, anything he could sell for a high, gone. At one time he had kicked Heroin but wrenched his back, my wife gave him some of her pain meds, and you guessed it, Lortab. He was rehooked and my poor wife had to deal with that trauma.
  3. Now, 6 years clean, he makes 6 figures, married with a child and owns a home. He is a joy to be around, one of the most kind hearted people on this planet. So pot has been a savior in his life

Thanks for the personal story fish.
Very impactful in making your point.
Good on you and your family coming out the other side of that tough period.

That is why, when incidents like this occur (such as Davis being arrested for DUI), it should remain a matter for the individual, their family, the coach, and the school to deal with the HC Rules. It is not for the public to dissect.

Yes, police reports may be public records, but that does not make it appropriate to broadcast them widely. Ask yourself: *Why does the media feel compelled to release this information?" The answer seems clear—it generates emotion, controversy, and ultimately, readership.

I grew up in a household affected by addiction. I won’t go into the details, but even fifty years later, I still carry the emotional weight of that environment. My children often wonder how I managed to come out of it as normal I am (how normal, is questionable, LOL).

With that perspective, I ask that we show some compassion for this young man. He does not need the world scrutinizing every detail of his situation. What he needs is privacy, support, and understanding.

We all understand what you are saying. Of course he needs support and help. However, I came to BYU as a non-member and was explained clearly what I could not do. And my parents taught me as a guest to follow the owner’s rules. So, those in control will decide Davis’s fate. But, the difference between Davis and myself is Davis is a public figure. He’s in the entertainment business of high level sports. The job of reporters and their companies is to report news of what is going on in the public. They also will or should investigate as well. So, I don’t fault them doing their job. I was in the newspapers for something back 50 years ago. I’ve had to make it known for professional licenses. I just felt let them and let me deal with it. I’m an adult. Davis wants to be in the NBA as a public figure. The media and everything else follows good and bad. I’m sure if Davis gets the right help and accepts the right help, he will deal with this. I hope he will and be back in the lineup soon.

I should also point out that Davis pled not guilty. What do you think about that?

What do you think about Davis pleading not guilty?

Time will tell. As I mentioned in one of my earlier posts—and as Fish also noted—there may be a very logical explanation for what happened. It may not be the case that this young man “violated” the sacred oath of the Honor Code. Sometimes mistakes occur simply because people do not fully understand the effects of certain medications.

You may want to read Coach Young comments about knowing what went on.

So, if you took medication for a physical issue and it affected you in a weird way, should you be called to the HC office and threaten with expulsion?

But I thought the HC had no difference in administering punishment? Public figure or not, “Kids” need to have some privacy, and respect. Even the HC office has stopped talking about cases because of that issue.

I like the old day where reporters did not look for news, but reported it, especially when it involves young men and women. Do you remember the big hub bub about Au Chu “DUI”? what happened? the case was dismissed because there was nothing there to go after, but according to the media they went full hog on it with the press and media outlets.

My point is and always will be, this is between the player, the coach and the school, everyone should “Wait” until it comes out through official channels.

I’m wondering how much mary jane was in his system. If it was less than it would be if he was smoking it, then perhaps he came from someone’s house that was smoking it and not him. I wonder if he’s also claiming he is not guilty for the accident and blaming the other driver.

You are hung up on the Honor Code people. I’m talking about the media’s right to investigate and report whatever they find. And, are you saying the old way reporters didn’t dig for information? I say they did a lot more back in the old days than they do now. Now, they just make up stories and fake news. At least the libitard media does without conscience.

Yes, it would be nice for everyone to wait. Ya right. The media isn’t going to wait. They keep writing stupid articles with clickbait headlines.

OK, here’s what I know: Listened to ESPN on BYU while driving back from guiding a newbie. The big news, he landed over 50 rainbows and browns is 3+ hours of fly fishing. LOL and you thought this was about Davis….

…..So they had a lawyer on talking about where things are at and Tom can speak to all the lawyer talk.

1 Davis got into the accident headed to the airport, assuming Provo and a private flight to UConn.

2 The police in processing the accident when they observed suspicious activity, it may be how the players acted etc. but they started snoopin and found pot. We don’t know who was in the car, who had the pot, or who was acting weird but they retained Davis, took him downtown and ended up doing a pee/blood test and sited him with a DUI, then released him to the team to fly out to UConn.

2 Because the Prosecuting attorney already assigned a Fine and that it is a class B misdemeanor, means were are already plenty of talk going on between the PA and others involved. Davis has been before a Judge and Davis’s team plead Not Guilty and requested a trial by Jury. Lawyer said that it is smart to do all these things so that Davis’s team can fall back on a jury trial vs. having a Judge. But he was very clear that the fact that there had been a fine by the PA, things will probably be done and over way before the Jan 14th trial date bla bla bla.

As I pointed out from day one. Davis does not get a lawyer and fight this unless 1- the police did not follow protocol, and Davis’s team wants it thrown out or; 2- Davis has a legal reason to explain what really happened and think he is innocent. 3- I know little about legal jockeying so take it for what it’s worth. 4- the D News had requested for police body cam video of the arrest, denied! an ongoing investigation.

3 KY has said that he knows completely what happened but will have the univ. handle all public statements, suspensions etc. KY also said that if given the green light, he would be happy to talk about what happened. He also said that if rules are broken, there are consequences not in this case but with all student athletes.

4 Hopper, you now know as much as any other human being that was not there. You know as much as the press so let the process take its course. BYU, the police, PA will tell the public more when they choose to.

5 Davis could choose to leave BYU, Sit out a year, Sit out for X number of games and play this season or be innocent. There are a lot of people involved who sound trustworthy and will do the right thing. that goes for Davis, our coaches, BYU, Davis’s lawyer, former BYU football player and even the Judge as Tom pointed out. They will do what is best for Davis and the schoot.

6 Really sucks, Davis is key to BYU’s run and cost us the UConn game and possibly this Wisc game etc. we are down 2 starters with Keba’s concussion, they just don’t let you play after a concussion for a few weeks. And unlike last season, BYU has a thin bench.

I was ten when my father graduated from a journalism program…they were definitely taught that their duty was to dig for the stories and the details. Modern journalists seem to be way to lazy relying on so many twitter/IG/FB crowds are saying whatever…as if whatever crowd in whatever echo chamber is worth reporting on. Pure junk journalism.

For that matter 40 odd years ago a good friend of my made his way up the ladder at the Daily Universe…digging for stories and uncovered details of stories made a big difference.

And Justice? the law? given a first time accusation what is best for Davis and the school may well be what is best for justice and the law but the reason judges get paid the “big bucks,” excuse my laughter, is that they are supposed to do the balancing act. Well prosecutors too which is not a popular political position these days.

Boscovitch doesn’t seem to have improved. He was supposed to be a key player off the bench.

Staton is more rough than diamond so far. He too was supposed to be a key player off the bench.

if the bench is thin right now it points to coaching and recruiting imperfections…not that there aren’t always room for improvements.
KY’s build on the days worked last year; but he has opted for raw NBA talent instead of proven NCAA talent and bet his early BYU years on his ability to develop players…hope it works out.

And the continued injury story of Baker is sad…so much potential drained by years and injuries.

what about that number one Juco player who will be here at BYU in December where he was to be red shirting? Can you play immediately starting when big 12 conference start on January 3? I think it is? And why not

That Center from the D league comes in in December. He could be huge if he plays this year.

Baker played well today. In fact, anyone who got some playing time did well. The bench played well. 29 points.

That is an amazing story. I can tell you are a great father. All the best to your son.
