Does anyone else think this is Ironic?

The Utah Football Staff consists of:

  • Kyle Whittingham - Head Coach (College: BYU)
  • Freddie Whittingham - Defensive Coach (College: BYU)
  • Jason Beck - Offensive Coordinator (College: BYU)
  • Mark Autuia - Running Backs Coach (College: BYU)
  • Micah Simmon - Wide Receivers Coach (College: BYU)

It’s amusing how some Ute fans are so obnoxious about BYU!

Wow! Do they have ANY coaches on their staff who played at Utah?

Morgan Scalley is one.

I’ve lived in Oregon since 1980. Here in Oregon, NO ONE CARES about the Yewts. On the other hand, fans here know about BYU and generally respect BYU’s mission and its teams.

My friends here can’t understand why UofU, from the admin to the student body to the AD and HC hate BYU so much. Frankly I don’t understand it either. Ducks fans have a fierce rivalry with the Beavers, but it’s nothing remotely close to the Yewt hate for BYU thing. I’ve seen literally hundreds of messages over the years of Utah fans saying things like “F BYU,” “BYU sucks,” etc to random strangers repping BYU gear. Ive witnessed it when visiting Utah. But I’ve literally never seen that here, and I work in a building with both avid Ducks fans and equally rabid Beavers fans.

So I ask the BYU fans who live in Utah, is it some weird religious bigotry?

I don’t live in Utah but I have a sister who does and a brother who did for a long time before he moved to Palo Alto this past summer. My sister worked at the University of Utah for many years and I can tell you without hesitation that you are on track with that question.

I don’t want to go into detail trying to explain it because it’s stupid honestly. Think about the Providence chant for a minute… what was the point? They didn’t even chant “BYU”, it was F the Mormons. So take that little incident and put it on steroids and you have a good percentage of Ute fans who, if not for BYU, would have no identity at all. They’ve been doing it for years and it’s old and tired.

Maybe it would be best not to play the ducks ever again doing regular season

I have lived in Utah for my entire 6 decades, What I have found when it came to Utah fans that the majority of the adult fans are good people, they don’t hate BYU. Yes, there are a few knuckleheads who make the rivalry into something bad.

The students as a whole are the ones that take it to the nasty level. It was students that harassed Hall’s family. I am not saying there are not bad fans, I just have not run into them as much.

I once sat in a sea of red(adult fans) with my Blue cougar gear on and you know what? we had a good time ribbing each other.

I know for a fact that KW does not hate BYU, he is competitive, and wants to win, but he has never said a negative thing about BYU itself, he has commented on how some BYU fans treated his wife in a very unkind way. I have talked to personally and my neighbor works for him.

There is a faction of Utah fans that has a real issue with how the church “runs the state”, How the good members of our church treats non LDS people in their neighborhoods. Trust me, some members are some the biggest AHoles I know.

I am not saying other peoples experiences did not happen, I just never had an issues with any Utah fans personally.

The other cause of the nastiness is the local media who promotes the “Holy War”, which term I have never liked. They stoke the bad feelings and push for a nasty rivalry to promote their media ratings.

That is my perspective, I am sure there are other Utah BYU fans that may be different.

One thing that may make me different, is when I go to Utah to watch the BYU game, I do not expect or look for bad behavior from the fans… Not sure if that helped my perspective, but that is how I roll,

I grew up next door to to an uncle and cousins who were Ute fans. As a kid I was a BYU fan but rooted for Utah and USU unless they were playing BYU but my cousins never rooted for the Y and I noticed this held true for every Utah fan I ever met. It finally got to the point I couldn’t root for the U because every time
the Y lost they would be even happier than than when Utah won.

One of my cousins finally came around when Crowton hired him as strength and conditioning coach and he held the job until he retired when Mendenhall took the Virginia job. We would talk on occasion years before he took the BYU job and he had matured out of his anti-BYU mindset but a lot of people never do.

I finally got over my dislike of the Utes and would root for them when they played out of conference when both teams were in the same conference and then when Utah got in the PAC 10 Utah fans got even worse and it got more difficult to root for them.

Most U fans I know as an adult aren’t rabid anti BYU haters but there are so many who are that it makes it difficult to root for the U.

I agree with you. Especially the last paragraph. I know people who went to BYU that got there looking for bad people and bad things. They never lasted long.
