First Time Watching the 2024-25 team last night

I realize it’s early in the season, but with all the hype over the summer, I thought this team would be lights-out better than last year’s team. We’ve certainly got some good athletes, and Demin is over-the-top good, but I felt underwhelmed watching the game. They looked nowhere near as good as what Pope had put together last year.

Defense. Occasionally exciting defense play, blocked shots and such, but mostly not. Guys wide open for threes everywhere. One exception: Demin. Wow.

Offense. Where are our shooters? One exception: Demin. Wow.

If the coaches don’t shore things up, it could be a long season come conference play.

I agree  with two observations. The BYU coaching staff is looking for a player to set up this team when Demin is out and Hall is out injured. They have had little luck. When Demin is out, no one is stepping up and providing the stability and playmaking that Demin provides. The second observation is, few teams will probably have the shooting ability from three pointers that Riverside had last night. BYU really tried to make a good defensive effort, Riverside couldn’t seem to miss. Meh-sometimes that happens. Demin had a great game. Hall should help this matter when he returns. Crawford needs to find the shooting touch and provide offense and defense. Baker looks a little slow and tentative out there. Knell was a liability last night

We saw some occasional lights of brilliance. We also saw some missed opportunities that comes with playing time. We have freshman out there even though they have experience overseas. It will take several games to learn to play together. Especially on defense. We got out to 17 point leads several times only to lose those leads. What is good about playing weaker teams early on, is that we can win and still learn a lot at the same time.

Foose should get the start. He is just a better player. Keba is a foul machine. He has to stop putting his hands on people.
Baker seems hesitant and maybe that’s just playing time with all his injuries in the past. He will be fine in a couple of games
Bos needs to be more aggressive as he can shoot.
Knell isn’t all that bad on defense. He knows where to be and usually is. Should after 7 years.
Catchings will have a lot of big nights. He was a bit cold from 3.
Saunders was Saunders.
Mag, not playing time. He just seems a bit lost.
Crawford just needs to relax more and shoot with confidence.

We will see the next couple of games. The defensive effort is there, but sometimes the execution is not

Defense lags behind offense early on. It will get better.

That is why we have 5 puff games to start the year.
Catchings is all of 17. He does shine at times but he is still a youngster.

Richie always brings it

So, if Catchings is only 17, then he will only be 18 to start next year. Does that mean we have him for 2 years?

Is Catching continues to plays like he did last night, he won’t be a one and done .
