Houston’s guards are elite, they will score 3s at a 40% clip. the only good thing I see here is BYU’s length, can we slow their shooting down. Houston is the #7 shooting team in all NCAA from 3. BYU comes in at #65 We have length at guard, that should help.
Houston will be playing all Sr., at home vs. BYU with a few Sr. and a lot of Fr.
If BYU can score inside, we have a chance. If it is a 3 point battle, BYU will lose by the margin.
The real question here is: Can BYU score over 60 points. If we can get to 75, BYU should win.
BYU’s defence is finally improving.
So I think Houston more like 60.
BYU’s offence on the road?
52?
Houston has played a better schedule.
Houston has a better offence.
Houston has a better defence.
Like BYU, Kelvin Sampson no longer has to play by the old NCAA insane rules, which got him in trouble twice, so I think the future is very bright for both versions of B12 Cougars.
I would love to see Demin show up in the scoring column.
Then I think the blue cougs would have a solid chance at an upset.
As long as Demin continues to pass and play defense like he did against ASU, minus the turnovers, the others can pick up the scoring. But, I hope the 3 point shots by Demin start to go in. It’s like he’s aiming instead of shooting. Like Knell used to all the time.
1st we have to beat them, I think we had a Better team in terms of veterans last year vs. this early season…2 of our starters are Fr. I watched Kanon on defense…sure he gets a big block now and then but one on one defense is really lacking.
For anyone that has played sports, a Sr will sleep walk past a Fr. They are two different animals
When I scout teams, the 1st thing I look at is: 1 is the game on the road, 2 Is the player a Fr-Sr. These two stats could for almost 50% of outcomes.
Houston is not as dominant as last season…yet…BYU should be pretty good by tourny time and on a neutral court I like our odds but Houston is elite. BYU wants to be and with time, they will get there
This Houston game is the toughest game BYU has on it’s schedule or @ISU in march. Kansas lost at home so they carry over their challenges from last season.
Road games will tell us everything about how good BYU is.
Chris, this is DEFINITELY one of your patented “first team to 70 wins” games, because I doubt both teams get to 70
Last year Cryer hung 23 on BYU and it should have been worse. Hall just simply couldn’t stay in front of him. Hall on the other hand only scored 6 pts on 10 shots. It was a gigantic mismatch at the point of attack. We will see if BYU’s additional length makes a difference this time around. We have seen Richie on the best ballhandler in several games this year. My guess is it’s either Hall or Demin on Cryer to open, or lots of matchup zone. KY’s matchup zone has looked really good at times this year, particularly against teams we will dominate on the glass. Houston has 2 6’8" sturdy dudes who rebound, but apart from that they are small.
We have to stop the ball at the point, exploit the boards and the paint to win.
I think we are looking at around 72-64 Houston, with BYU putting up a solid fight.
This is really depressing. We aren’t even competitive. I think we need to pump the brakes on the Egor NBA lottery pick chatter. These aren’t slow white euros we are playing against.
Catchings isn’t ready either. We got blitzed by seniors who know how to defend. The pressure was too much. They extend out and get back quickly. Our offense has to change. Too much standing around.
I really hope that is the worst BYU plays all year because if they can’t compete at a better level than that it will be a long season. Pathetic in so many ways…
What was so weird is that teams have pressed us in games. But we found the open spots to throw quickly to and find open shooters outside and inside. Today, we threw it away a lot. Balls got tipped and we did not scramble hard to get the 50-50 loose balls.
Young needs to get the players to work so much harder or he’s going to lose top recruits. Neither Demin or Catchings look like NBA picks right now.
So, how about this theory on what happened. The coaches figured they would lose in Houston. So, instead of spending time preparing for Houston, the spent their time for Texas Tech on Tuesday in which is a home game.
I don’t agree with all of your comments Hopper. I think they prepared for Houston just like they do every game. The problem was that they just weren’t engaged and there is no leader on this team to make that happen. KY can’t MAKE it happen. He can only help prepare them and nobody stepped up. When the best player on the floor for BYU is Knell, and you are playing a team like Houston, that is the result you will get.
I think the USA college game moves too fast for Demin. Euro ball is very slow and methodical. He is a good player with good talent and potential but he needs to pick up the speed of the game quickly (no pun intended). This is the reason he is making silly turnovers and can’t get his shot to go down. The pace of the game is something he’s not used to. Houston was too quick on defense. They don’t play fast necessarily but they do when the opportunity is there and BYU played right into their hands. So many open threes, easy rebounds, etc. and when you stand around and watch the opponent do all those things it makes them comfortable. Houston looked very comfortable yesterday.
BYU did everything wrong and they paid a heavy price. The officials weren’t the greatest either and Young let them know on several occasions. That was in no way the reason for the loss. The loss is all on the players and their lack of motivation. It was embarrassing.
Why weren’t we engaged? You are good at noting our downfalls and mistakes. What you miss on is the reasons for it. Some on ESPN even noted there is a difference between the NBA and College game and how the seasons are coached differently. With all NBA coaches at BYU, I would expect to see this. For instance, what is the goal for the season and therefore each game. In the NBA, the goal is to make the playoffs. In our case, It’s to be in the top 8 of our league to have a shot at the opportunity to play in the March Madness as one of 68 teams. Some games have more meaning than others. The Houston game is a tier 1 game and we get points for that. We play them once where Houston hasn’t lost in 30 games. It’s more important to beat Texas Tech on Tuesday. Gee, which game do we prepare for? We will see if this helped by how we play Tuesday. And, to see if aim right.
LIFE: You can talk about it but then reality hits you in the face. Nothing better then a good ol whoopin to get you to pay attention. Houston’s Seniors took us out the woodshed. I was fishing yesterday so I missed the carnage.
Case in point: Houston was ranked #2 or 3 in Pomeroy with 3 loses. Gonzaga has 4 losses and still ranked top 6. BYU #40ish- not surprised 2025 Pomeroy College Basketball Ratings
good points:
Demin came to BYU to learn the American style of BBall. He needed this butt kicking.
So, How about this theory on what happened: Freshmen need games like this. Nobody likes to be embarrassed on TV
Perhaps they listen in practice.
no argument there
Calapari on leaving Kentucky, WHY??? One and Dones don’t win Nattys
My thoughts:
It was a great day fishing!
Does anyone here think KY and Coaches were panicked? I guarantee the Coaches from top to bottom probably smiled at one another on the flight home and said, " Do you think they will be listening in practice"?
Hurley has been beat up about as bad as this loss
Went to Maui and lost 3 straight. He is the Natty Champ but is he panicked? Nope, went out and beat Baylor, Texas and Gonzaga in succession.
Hence I posted, '“Houston, We have a problem/Road Game”
Never get too high or too low.
