Is BYU a Big 12 contender?

BYU is 5-0, with only ISU 4-0 as undefeated, they are the frontrunners today.
looking ahead, ISU has two monsters waiting at the end of the season: @Utah and KSU, KSU is one I really think is a challenger for the whole enchilada.

Really, I just look at road games of which
BYU@Baylor
Arizona@Utah
ISU@Houston
CU@UCF is by far the most impressive. Colorado’s QB Saunders is a lock for the best QB in the country right now. Not saying they will win the Big 12 cause they were 99% loss to Baylor at home but you win on the road, and you are a contender, period.

Remember when I said, I would be a buyer if BYU can get their Rushing game going-minus Retzaiff, he does not count as a rushing stat. KSU, we saw what Moa could do vs. Baylor, got close to 100 yds so I am feelin it but need to see Martin, Moa as the fighters that get 1st downs, extend series and snuff out other teams hopes of getting the ball back in tight games.

If BYU gets the running game going, with our big D, Yes, BYU would be a solid contender

BYU should move up at least 2 spots this week. SMU win at Louisville is HUGE - close to BYU winning a game this weekend in helping their status.
A&M cloppering MO is tricky. They won by too much probably. BYU should pass MO but A&M will likely pass BYU. Although if BYU gets to 15, might be hard to move A&M 11 spots on any win (and was at home).

The Big 12 is crazy. Based on what has happened so far every game BYU has left is winnable and every team they have left on their schedule could beat them. Even Houston looks like it could be a difficult game now. Iowa State looked very good against Baylor and may be a top 10 team. Oklahoma St is playing the worst football in the league right now and they were one of the preseason favorites.

There are no bad teams in the league and no great teams either. Lots of good teams but no great teams.

I have no idea if BYU is a real contender or not. They need to stay healthy and keep winning.

moved up 3 spots to #14 in the AP and 4 spots to #15 in the Coaches poll. we have 2 games at home, this sat. vs. Arizona and the week after, at home vs. Ok State., that team was supposed to challenge for the BYU 12 and has been absolutely abysmal. In Fact, by OSU and Kansas were the darlings of the Big 12 along with Utah to win it all, they are not themselves even remotely.

Cam Rising can’t stay hearlthy, he has been in college for 7 years now, and to my knowledge, he has not completed a full season yet.

Jalen Danials, Kansas was going to have a monster year, he was unstoppable last season, this year… a fail.

Bohanon can replace him. Not too worried but hopefully Retzlaff stays healthy.

I am happy for BYU football. But I am not a buy-in on this team yet. Too many questions on the quality of the opposition and even if it turns out that the competition is up to snuff - I don’t have faith that BYU won’t get over confident and lose to a below average team. They do it every season and usually more than once …. The last 20+ years.

Strength of Record after almost half the season. BYU is #1. So, the quality of wins is without question. With that said, the team has to continue to prepare aggressively improving in the areas they know they have to against Arizona. One game at time. From this point on, we have 3 more games until another by-week to get ready for Utah.

As I have said, I am not all in until BYU can extend drives with a good rushing attack…to date, we have been working with injured RBs, 0 experience RBs, True Fr. RBs and just we have been holding our own. I am a big big Retzaiff fan simply because he has done everything asked of him and gets better by each game.

Keys are the same-WIN at Home, play tough on the road. Football :football: is so mental. BYU should be really up right now and the next two games are massive. Retzlaff is confident right now and needs to keep improving and building confidence with each game. Fans at the games need to be in a frenzy. Coaches need to be smart. I have a feeling that Hill gets pretty close to 100% effort from his defense. Now can the OL be dominant and open holes, because the running game is crucial to BYU’s offense and losing Pay is tough

Fifita is not a great runner. TTU pressured him relentlessly and he didn’t handle it well. Arizona has a pretty good run game, particularly inside the tackles. I want to see an aggressive run D and force Fifita to beat us. We don’t have anyone who can guard McM in space, so the key is pressure, pressure, and more pressure to force the ball out of Fifita’s hand before McM can create separation downfield. Blitz those A/B gaps to shut down the interior run and to get inside pressure on pass plays, and let JK come with the delayed pressure and hit Fifita a ton. He was a bit shook up after TTU clobbered him several times with blitzes.

Arizona has averaged only 15ppg in their last 4 games.

I think BYU wins this one 27-20.

Big 12 Power Rankings: As Cam Rising’s status remains in flux, how does that influence Utah’s place? (msn.com)

Mid season report card:
Looking at the beginning of the season, BYU looked to be way over it’s head with daunting games vs. Kansas, Utah, KSU, UCF, Az and OSU. Mid season the picture is much clearer:

Kansas has been absolutely putrid. They are now dead last in the Big 12, Their QB was looking Heisman, now is their biggest anchor.

Utah with Cam Raising looked to be a national contender, but as Raising always gets injured (7 years now), they have fallen to #6. I still think they are challengers but not with true fr. Wilson

KSU is a strong contender, they just lost to a buzz saw, BYU. We may see them again!

UCF stock is falling fast. They’re problem is failing defense and one dimensional offense. They looked like a loss for BYU on the road, today? I like our odds!

OkSt has just face planted, they started the same way last year then came roaring back to challenge for the Big 12 crown. Not happening this year, They can’t stop teams and can’t score

Arizona, we will find out Sat. but they have not been the offensive juggernaut that they were last year.

The point I am making is that (aro pointed this out) All of the teams BYU thought would be improbable wins are now in sight.

IF BYU’s running game comes alive, watch out nationally.

the guys from the first post put on a good show. I have been watching them the last couple of week.

the nice thing about being in the big12 is, we don’t have to go the Dnews or the other local papers to get info. there are a ton of podcasts that are focused on the big12 and us.
