Thank you Bronco for the 99 wins. Thank you for running a clean program etc. And thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking Robbie the Robot with you to Virginia. Finally we have coaches that recognize talent and are savy enough to make some in game adjustments. No more noodle armed safeties playing the qb position. Woo hoo!! Byu is back baby!
One more season with Anae’s delusional gfgh off tackle script and I would have lost my mind. No more sitting great talent like Munns for 5 years while Bronco plays his favorite creamery companion. Ty is going to turn the stagnated byu offense around. Its a GREAT time to be a cougarfan. Thank you Bronco for taking your coveted dive heavy, boring offensive scheme to Virginia with you. Had Anae been offered the byu head coaching job, my interest in byu football, along with my season tickets, would be a distant memory. Byu has some great coaches now. Finally, Quarterback university is back on track. I could not be happier.
I appreciate the optimism! While I am also drinking the blue kool aid by the gallon, I’ll hold off on announcing the return to the glory days and qb university until we’ve seen some actual results on the field.
Put the ice cube trays in the freezer my friend. The traditional blue Kool aid is being brewed. I’m usually pretty reserved about hyping up the football program, but what excites me most is the fact that byu has hired all the coaches they should have hired 3 years ago. It’s a game changer. Anyone with a brain knew that Anae 2.0 was destined to be a bust. And it was.
IMO no way can byu’s new caches be worse than the old ones. Coach Clark has more football smarts in his left pinky finger than Anae will ever possess and he’s merely the tight end coach! Add in coach lamb, an offensive genius, and Ben Cahoon, who never should have been let go to begin with, back in place with the receivers and you have one delicious, potentially exquisite cup of bright blue beverage …
Feel the optimism coarse through your veins. Byu just snatched up the best coaching staff they could have possibly gotten. what more could you ask for? I know, I know, but Steve Young is busy fluffing up his broadcasting career and Andy Reid is coaching some worthless pro football team in the desert.
Honestly I think byu has hit a home run with their coaching hires. Lamb and Clark are fantastic, experienced coaches and will mentor Detmer behind the scenes until he gets more comfortable as a college football coach. Best thing is…There will be no more nfl talent rotting on the byu sideline. Hooraaa!
Let’s not be quite so hard on Bronco. Bronco put A LOT of former BYU players in the NFL–and I count practice squad guys as well because they make real $ too. Yes they are almost exclusively defensive players, and that is of course indicative of Bronco’s strength but also his weakness. And Yes I will forever be mystified by the whole Nick Howell thing, but it was a great accomplishment for Bronco to establish a nationally recognized D at Quarterback U. All that said, I’m excited about the new staff. I think it’s significant both culturally and strategically to have the first ever Tongan D1 coach and BYU’s first ever minority HC in a major sport. Best yet, Kalani got the job because HE DESERVED it, and he’s already proving it by hiring a great staff and getting commits and visits from kids who didn’t even have BYU on their radar. Lastly, I think Detmer will be AWESOME. I believe the great value in an OC is not designing or practicing plays (which anyone can do), but knowing, in game and under pressure, what will work and what won’t work, including “looking ahead” a few plays, and being able to process and call that in a matter of seconds. This is where I think Detmer will excel. I think he is just has a higher football IQ and can process faster and has better instincts than everyone else. This will be exciting.
Good to hear from one of the most passionate BYU football fans again. What would a Hampton post be without a Munns reference? We need an update, what is Jason up to these days? Are you still the president of his fan club?
I must admit it is an exciting time for BYU football and I am glad that the Robot has moved on… nothing personal at all, but his coaching style drove me crazy. I agree with Tom, I am thinking and hoping that Detmer has such an advanced football mind that he will be able to do those things that were mentioned. It is all about intuition and knowing what is working, looking ahead and anticipating what will be successful. That is the thing I am most excited about.
Hawks: In our area I’ve always been considered a good coach. My teams win and my kids love me and I love them. But this year my son joined my staff as OC, and for the first time ever I was not calling the plays. Ohmygoodnessgracious did I learn a lot! It’s like Marcus’ mind is a football supercomputer and mine is an abacus. I really gained an appreciation for an OC with great instincts and processing under pressure. With Anae I always felt like he had good plays and a good plan, but that he simply couldn’t instinctively process and adjust during a possession or a game–and that in game processing is something I think cannot be taught. We see plenty of D1 OCs who seem to have a knack for always “getting it right.” I think Detmer will be one of those guys. PS if Sitake and Detmer also recruit better, faster guys they will both look smarter
welcome back C Hampton. I can agree on the Bronco favoritism, those were hard years to follow. I think we can all say that Bronco had peaked and it was time to inject new blood. I will say that I am slightly interested is watching how BYU East performs in the future. I hope they do well for everyone’s sake, Anae included.
I am smiling as I write this…how will the mostly black recruits respond to Bronco’s weird verbiage. It may be just what many of them want and need in their lives.
As for Sitake and Detmer, The first step is recruiting and it seems like they are certainly getting the job done there.
Point taken. I was a little rough on Bronco there. I’m definitely not a Bronco basher, but choosing the best qb wasn’t his strong point. I guess I am sorta giddy over the potential that byu has with these new coaches. The offense is going to be sooooo much better. Maybe not right off the bat, but by mid seaaon we will all be witnessing a byu offense that makes us proud instead of confused. I’ll bet a cougar dog and a coke on it. Oh wait, make that a caffeine free, diet, aspartame infused coke.
Howdy Jim. It’s been awhile. Glad to see that you guys are keeping the board alive and well. Kansas City? Tuscon? It’s all the same to me. I don’t even follow the nfl at all anymore. It’s just not the same.
I do wish Bronco and Anae success in Virginia. I think we witnessed the ceiling of what an Anae offense can be. I’ll give it a B-. With Detmer at the helm I just feel that byu’s offensive has so much more potential. Also you gotta believe that with Ty’s keen eye and experience, the chances are pretty dang good that the best quarterback on the roster will actually be the one taking snaps in September. Taysom should go ahead and just switch ovet to the running back or safety position now. Tanner Mangum is here to stay.
Oh and the last I heard of Jason Munns? Apparently he was seen streaking into the byu practice facility wearing nothing but a Y football helmet and a jock strap, then actually jumping from the rafters of les stadium and using his byu senior blanket as a parachute. Apparently the career ending concussion he endured that spring of his senior year was to blame for the shenanigans. Witnesses reported a mangled Munns staggering into the street after breaking nearly every bone in his body on the frozen turf. Amazingly he jumped right up and was overheard by stunned onlookers repeating over and over “put me in coach, I’m ready to play”. It seems nobody has seen or heard from him since. Truly tragic.
Hey Chris, it’s good to be back. I missed this forum. Agreed, from everything I’ve heard, Sitake is a fantastic recruiter. I can’t wait 'till we see the boys in blue take the field this fall. Byu has some awesome coaches on their staff now. Nothing personal against Bronco and Anae, I wish them well, but I feel a whole lot better going forward with this new group of guys. Detmer, Clark, Lamb and Cahoon? Are you kidding me?! Byu’s ceiling just got raised about 30 feet!!
Well, your point is taken as well–I think we are basically saying the same thing: that Bronco did a great job with D, sent a bunch of defensive players to the NFL, because that’s where nearly all of his focus was, and DEFINITELY his passion; however, he neglected the offense and certainly didn’t recruit or develop talent on that side of the ball. Well, that wasn’t good enough to get us over the hump. So, thanks Bronco for bringing us back from Crowton’s abyss, and HELLO KALANI AND TY who will take us to the next level.
I have agreed with most of what you have said, but your comment about Taysom seems waaayyyyy off. Ty has repeatedly called Taysom the most athletic QB BYU has ever had, and has also said he wants him back to compete for the starting position. If Taysom does come back for another year, I honestly expect that he will earn the starting position.
I strongly disagree, but we’ll see. Taysom is a talented athlete no doubt. However, he’s not the best passer in the world. He’s pretty good with the short passses and long bombs, but the intermediate throws he struggles with. The ball sails on him because he uses too much hip motion and not enough wrist action. Mangum has much better range, accuracy and has just a better overall throwing motion. Plus Tanner actually goes to his 2nd and 3rd read instead of just running when the first receiver is covered. Taysom is getting better sure, but his ceiling at qb isn’t half as high as Tanner’s. IMO.
Nothing against Taysom Hill personally, i love his moxy, but certainly Ty will ditch the worthless read option scheme and revert back to the pro style offense that made byu byu. Gfgh and the ridiculous running qb days are, thankfully, over now.
The double tight end set is something Anae never utilized and it drove me nuts. I believe Ty will fix the inadequacies left behind by the last O.C. We don’t need a qb running haphazardly around the football field all the time. Its borderline insanity. Let the running backs run, let the tight ends catch, let the qb throw. IMO if Taysom Hill really wants to make an nfl roster, he should switch over to the safety position immediately. He’d be great there.
