Long Term Extension for KS

Interesting to see a LONG term extension for KS. He still had 3 years on his deal, so in this case long likely means another 4 or 5 years on top of that (just guessing there). This means that Holmoe never sees Jay Hill as the HC at BYU.

I think KS is the perfect front man for the program and for BYU. Everyone loves him and he is an A+++++ human. He has learned his lesson the hard way as a HC that the honor code and academics matter. He has won more than he has lost. He has been the recipient of some good luck and timing. Perfect BYU guy.

On the other hand, he absolutely butchered the Tuiaki situation, as well as letting ARod hire our awful previous OL coach. Both mistakes due to blind spots for his long time friends. If social media and the general media is any indication, a large % of BYU fans see the same mistake being made with ARod that he made with Tuiaki. Time will tell there.

I don’t think BYU can be elite—say an every year top 20 team—without an elite staff, and that has been a serious problem for Kalani for most of his 9 years as HC. Hiring Jay Hill has resulted in a MASSIVE AND I MEAN MASSIVE upgrade in D both on the field and recruiting. I’d hate to see whatever time we have with Jay Hill go to waste with an O that can’t keep up.

I can’t get over Kalani openly questioning some of the biggest blunders in our last several games. He knows this season was very good but that a magic, perhaps once in a decade or even once in a generation opportunity was wasted, and he knows exactly why. Now we will see if he does anything about it.

Do you know this on a personal level or just from what you have observed? I agree with the comment of him being a perfect front man for the BYU program and what they want. I am of the mindset that what they don’t want is long term success as far as wins and losses go and that is fine. If it meant sacrificing the altruistic goals of the church the brethren would have none of it.

I’ve always wondered why Detmer was brought in and then why he was fired a couple years later. Did he and KS get along? I think it’s a given that Detmer had an incredible football mind, bigger than our current OC surely, but was never really given the opportunity to develop any kind of an offense. I don’t see how it would be worse than what we currently have.

Any insiders have a thought on this, since we are talking about the OC all the time…

You do know that 3 out of the last 5 years we have won 10 games. Last year was the first year in a P4 conference playing the big boys in 10 games. It took Utah how many years to go from the MWC to winning 10 games in the PAC12? KS doesn’t want to win? Really?
You’ve heard of TDS. I’d put his in that category. Especially Thawk and Tlanier. You are getting caught up in it along with the hate capitalism crowd.

the 2 reasons why I see this extension:
1 KS and the Poly pipeline
2 Sitake will always bring respect to the program, even his enemies see him as a gentleman.

The down side as you point out:

Either bring in a strong QB coach to “help” Arod or you have to cut him loose. He hit his “upside” in the Wilson years. To get to the next level, BYU has got to get a OC that reacts to in game changes and adding new ripples to offensive plays as the season goes. Defenses are too locked in by mid season and BYU looks just anemic late in the last 2 seasons

the million $ question for our off season. now is the perfect time to act in terms of our OC

I have never met KS. But I know a couple of the coaches and others in the AD and have heard nothing but praise for KS as a person. I do think there is great value in a HC who is universally loved and is simply a nice person. Based on many off the field conversations I’ve had with these guys, my measured opinion is that KS is all that.

I think it’s completely fair for devout fans to question the coaches and their decisions. BYU wants our money and as I tell my kids, “if you take money from somebody you pay the price off having to listen to them.”

Every P4 fan base chimes in on the good, the bad, and the ugly when it comes to the coaches. And it’s fair. These guys become multi-millionaires doing what they love, and they know and understand what comes with it.

Jim I also wanted to mention that I agree with you that BYU doesn’t—and won’t—“sell out” to have an elite football program under the current NIL scheme (for example, I’ve read Ohio State and Oregon both have football player payrolls over $100 MILLION). But I’ve talked to somebody very near the top of the pile at BYU and there is a widespread belief that the congressional/litigation settlement being discussed could allow players to still make a lot of $ while leveling the playing field significantly. As it stands it’s whacked because it’s just weird that a lot of college players are making more than a lot of NFL guys.
