I totally believe you painted the big picture. I want to see more Demin and more Catchings. Mags can and should come in for Saunders before Knell. However, the potential for Knell to score 20+ in any one game is far greater than Mags. Right now, we need more scoring than defense.
Huh? Mag isn’t SUPPOSED to create his own shots. This team has exactly one guy who has proven he can consistently create his own shot off the dribble: Saunders. You know, the guy who scored 26 and yet somehow only got ONE FG attempt in the last 6:30 of the game. What in the world does THAT have to do with Mag?
That’s rhetorical. I’ve said all I can on this thread.
Catchings can and has created his own shot. And, you are correct. Mags can’t. Aro sees the big picture. Does Dybantsa and others question if KY can get them ready for the NBA if Catchings and Demin are getting bench time?
If they are smart they don’t. If everyone here can clearly see that Catchings and Demin need a lot more experience and learning to be NBA ready, then I think the players that are coming (Dybantsa, Staton, etc.) will also see that. Dybantsa is a smart kid and his dad is even smarter so hopefully they understand that. AJ is light years ahead of Demin and Catchings already.
I’m not sure why you think BYU needs 5 guys who can create their own shot (I question your belief on the fact that Catchings and Demin are even close to that as neither has shown it so far) and that is what will win games for BYU. That is not the issue, the issue is chemistry and having a go to guy. Saunders is clearly the most developed and experienced player as well as the most reliable at this point. Is he always reliable? No, but certainly more than anyone else. Demin and Catchings will get there eventually but they are simply not up to speed or ready at this point in time. Sitting them a bit and letting them think, watch and learn isn’t such a bad idea. They will get there but in the mean time BYU needs to win games too and that means using players that will help that happen. Mag is one of those players.
Once again your perspective differs from everyone else. Try and at least entertain the idea that others have insight and might just be right once in a while. Stop perseverating on the “big picture” comment I made. It is keeping your from being able to see and understand what it is.
Yeah, this was a pretty short sighted comment and analysis. I don’t think whether Mag can or cannot create his own shot is attributable to any loss. The loss was a result of many more factors than that one, which can’t really be classified as a “factor” in the losses. Completely irrelevant… It’s like saying the reason the Lakers lose to the Celtics back in the day was because Kurt Rambis couldn’t create his own shot or something akin to that. It just doesn’t make any applicable sense.
Those are real possibilities though I would hope that both of them, as well as any others that come along, would recognize that it is a factor of their learning curve and not a failure of the coaching staff. It may take Young a couple years to understand how he can coach and win college games while helping the development of blue chip players to be NBA ready as quickly as possible. Maturity is a big part of it. That is why I see Dybantsa in an entirely different realm than Demin or Catchings. They can get there but it might take more time. I think AJ could go straight to the NBA from high school.
I said the same thing and you say I’m wrong. Aro says it and it’s a real possibility. Understand why I challenge your big picture comments as well as most others
Demin is ranked #17 on the NBA board, fortunately they look at Potential over current statis. Yes, he has lost a top 10 ranking for now because of his pathetic 3 point shooting and a few bad turnover games but Egor is on track to be gone next year…Catchings in not on many radars right now.
Yes!
100%
For Hopper: There are 4 guys that constantly create their own shots and I have talked in detail about them throughout the season.
Hall
Demin
Baker
Saunders
everyone else on the team are going to score if the ball is kicked out to them. Shoot or drive but they are not creating their own shots. I hope that is clear. Mag, Catchings especially Knell do not create their own shots.
Want to clear up another misunderstanding:
I am not advocating benching Catchings or Knell, again a Hopper misquote.
I evaluate who gives BYU their best chance of winning in the Big 12. I really don’t care who starts, I care who is taking up most of the minutes and some simple observations
Catchings and Knell are POOOR defenders therefore they should not spend big minutes together on the floor…That is what I said…Hopper hears bench them.
I went into detail about BYU’s woos and Rotations are a big problem right now. Mag is playing miles ahead of Catchings… Mag is not going to play the point, or the shooting guard. He is a 3 or 4, the same as Catchings… That is what I said.
I also said that Hall, Demin, Mag, Saunders, Foos gives BYU the best overall 5 guys on the coart. All good defenders that can score…
I also remember 6 months ago pointing out that Catchings should not be a starter when you have Mag and Boskovic competing for the same minutes…right now his play is proving me right.
Boskovic has been a big bust (maybe he’s hurt, don’t know) but Mag is playing elite Big 12 ball and should be rewarded. Finally, I said 6 months ago, this Catchings kid may not be ready for prime time but by the end of regular season play, we should be seeing his potential. That is all I have ever said. Hopper knows this, he just spends his days looking to argue with anyone as all times.
Go Cougs,
agreed, the time for pleasing everyone is over. BYU has to win NOW. KY will go with the guys that can get us to the finish line.
