No comments on the Pacific game?

I believe Rose started failing when Rice left. Pope did well with the big guys and then left-,Schoyer improved the defense- then left. All three are better than Rose

The building blocks of the Rose system were pretty good recruiting by Cleveland. A very good Jimmer who fell into Roses lap and then a succession of good assistant coaches who are now gone because they couldn’t take it anymore.

Hardnet now leaves the program mid season and the titanic has hit the iceberg! Hardnett grabs the first life raft!!! Good for him!!

I am only going to copy and paste part of your comments to hopper… but let me say that I am certain what you said flew right over the top of his head. His responses to me only confirm that fact. I am not sure what the hopper sees or what he is thinking when he sees it but his comments are routinely so far off the mark it isn’t even funny.

Hardnett left the program? When?

This afternoon … right after he told Rose that he has never played for a worse coach!!

There is nothing in the news.

It will be tomorrow.

Okay, I just read something about it. Sounds like he was leaving after this season anyways. So, according to you and others we should be bringing along someone else for the future. Well, someone else gets a shot then… Obviously something happened after his good game that got him only 5 minutes and he didn’t do anything in those 5 minutes but show a bad attitude. Good riddance!

Interesting news from Vanguish. The main reason that he was not happy for a long time at BYU and not happy with his coaches. And one disturbing part that he was playing less when Nick Emery started playing again. What were Dave Rose, Tom Holemoe and BYU thinking about Nick staying in the BYU basketball team?
So who else is going to leave BYU? Will Dave Rose going to explain that he never did to other players “Chatman, FB4, Toolson, Dastrup, etc.?”

Hardnett was about to explode when he felt ready to leave before winter semester to start on Monday (today). Enough of this and he was done. The hot seat got HOTTER THAN EVER on Dave Rose!

He was going to leave as a graduate student like Carlino. Emery will be here next year. Makes sense for Emery to play more. Other teams lose players for the same reason BYU does. Will BYU do better with a different coach? No one knows that. We thought Detmer was the answer for the football team. None of these kids will make it long term in the NBA. Neither will Chatman or Dastrup. Maybe Childs. He needs another year in college.

He’s just another selfish young man…

I am still DISGUSTED that Rose allowed Emery back on the team. That wasn’t some one time mistake–the DN and SLT reported he took money, a car, and free vacations, including an all expense paid trip to Europe, for pete’s sake. How brazen or stupid could he be to think he wasn’t going to get caught?? Ok, maybe some guy lets him play golf for free. Dumb, but I get it. But trips? Cars? Geez already…Then Rose welcomes him back, but runs off kids like Jordan Chatman, PD, and Hardnett–all super athletic for their size, and NONE of them TOOK MONEY TO PLAY and got BYU SANCTIONED. I’m sick of it.

Yeah, just more nonsense and the program is in disarray.

Just like grasshoppers resonse to news like this, it is predictable and expected now.

Does anything this coach does make sense anymore?

It is really unbelievable what is going on. Watching this team is like watching a train wreck. I don’t want to look but I can’t take my eyes off it because it is truly incredible to watch.

Yep, he did that. Other coaches in other programs also took back kids after stupid and illegal acts. It’s called repentance and forgiveness. Sorry for Rose giving a kid a second chance. And , sorry for Hardnett having to prove himself by competing for playing time. It’s not like almost every time Hardnett stepped on the floor he dazzled people. His game was spotty. One game he would look all world and the next game all nothing.
Let me write it again. Every team we play drives and makes 99% of their layups and short drop in shots. Hardnett about 50% of his drives. He may be quick and a good defensive player but he’s not all that great.
What is the real problem? We are guard heavy. And, as far as I’m concerned, Harding is as good as Hardnett is right now. And he’s not a problem attitude. Burgleson can now play more and get that experience you talk about. Our problem is with the bigs. Yolie is the only real good player at this point. Baxter is raw and hopefully continues to improve. Lee is raw but can develop.
Rose gave Hardnett , an undersized guard and raw a chance at D1 ball. No one else gave him a scholarship. And this is how he behaves? Good riddance if it’s all true. Carlino left with nothing but respectful behavior to Rose and BYU. Same with the others. Ya, Emery did some wrong things. But his attitude wasn’t to bad mouth Rose or BYU. He did the right things with a great family helping him through a tough situation. In my line of business, I’ve been in the middle of some very nasty divorces. I’ve been in the middle of the most nasty ones in the Church with child molesting and spousal abuses. My daughter included. So, for Emery to get back to a good place in the best place for support, BYU, kudos to him.
Is it time for Rose to go? Maybe. Sometimes you simply need a change at leadership. Just like with bishops

So the only way Emery was going to get the “support” he needed to get back on track was to be readmitted on to the basketball team?

Totally disagree. There are so many ways he could have done it differently… it’s not even worthy of discussion.

You mentioned the real problem with the team and then went on to mention many problems… guard heavy, problem with the bigs, problems with player development, etc. but you never really talk about the root of all those problems.

This is on Rose. He is the one that recruited all the guards, the one that doesn’t develop bigs or players in general. He is the one that decides who plays and who doesn’t. He is the one that creates an environment where players want to leave the program.

Lastly, I’m not sure what “line of work” you are talking about but it has nothing to do with the basketball program at BYU. Not sure why you mentioned it.

You messaged me this about Hardnett a week ago, long before there was any news to it. Rose is toast. He can sink with the Emery ship.

That shows me you don’t know much about Emery’s past and reasons for his bazaar behavior. Emery is where he should be. Hardnett is where he needs to be because of his lack of desire to compete for a position. Like life should be fair. It’s his turn. He’s the good “son” so why give a party for the return of the prodigal son! Didn’t anyone in here learn from that lesson? Doesn’t seem so.

You are assuming that it is an open, fair, objective competition to “compete for a position.”

On what grounds do you assume that?

Scott, you are increasingly “Baghdad Bob” about Rose and the basketball program. Rose can never, ever do any wrong (not ever), and he always, always, does just the thing the program and the players need. The rest of us need to disbelieve what our lying eyes tell us.

Anyone think that Rose can be prevailed upon to retire? I don’t see him recovering from this year, even if got “good” recruits. He doesn’t know how to coach. He is exactly like an adult watching a middle school pickup game at the park. He never makes adjustments, pre-game, in-game, or in preparation for the next time, against opponents. His teams play no defense, so it’s clearly not something they address or work on.

You are assuming the team doesn’t work on defense. People keep saying we have not talent on the team. That we have average players. So, why do you except anything different but average defense? This is then just a statement of hypocrisy.

To Hardnett, everyone is still saying Rose told Hardnett his time would be less with Emery’s return. If it were me I would say to Rose Emery will have to fight for that time because I’m stepping up my game. Not start bad mouthing the coach even on the bench. Remember, Hardnett knows playing time depends on what players show in practice. So, I’m sure something happened in practice is why he only played 5 minutes and did nothing while he was in the game.
