Pete Rose dies at 83

Doubtful Jackson tried to throw any games. He actually had a great World Series, however, he took money along with the rest of the Black Sox. He may have been illiterate but he was an adult and had to know what was going on. It’s unfortunate he got involved and prematurely ended his career but the commissioner ruled that anybody who was involved in gambling on games was banned and that anybody with knowledge about a conspiracy to throw games would be banished. The Hall has been very consistent about a no tolerance policy about gambling on games. The eight Black Sox were not the only ones banished in 1921. There were a number of others banned because fixing games for money had been going on for several years. Even Ty Cobb and Tris Speaker who were the biggest stars in the game, at the time, were under investigation.

Babe Ruth became the games’ biggest star by 1920 and took the public’s mind off the scandal Judge Landis got rid of all the known crooked players and baseball entered what was called its golden era.

I have no problem with them being banned from MLB corporation. The Hall is a different group is it not? It’s a group of sports writer, isn’t it? They can be recognized concerning their work on the field. Did baseball also throw out any of their records as well? I don’t think so.

How is that a problem. We are all betting on our teams to win, we are all trying to win.

100% agree, But other then the league banning gambling all together, betting on your team to win is not different to me then not betting at all. what am I missing?

Stop using logic. I’m not for gambling in any form. But, as it is used in this context, I agree. A little more motivation to work and try harder to win. Point shaving and gambling not to win is where the problem exists. Put Rose and Shoeless Joe in the HOF.

What if you bet on your team to lose? Then you didn’t try hard or purposely made errors or outs. Everything about gambling is shady. I hate to see it in sports, but when it comes to money it will be hard to get rid of

The Black Sox took money to lose the series betting on your team to lose is just one step removed from that.

Yes, most did that were involved. But not Shoeless Joe. He did everything he could to win.

Yeh it’s too bad and a lot of athletes become victims of crime syndicates that make a lot of money and leave the athletes with little. Look how much Ohtani lost-close to 20 million if what we a hearing are the actual facts

The difference is the fact that he was a player and a manager who had a direct affect on the game while we are simply fans.

Big Difference!

Wouldn’t that mean the player and manager would manage and play harder, smarter and better? I guess that hurts the other team so it isn’t fair… :weary:

You liked riding the pine?

Only if you are betting to lose, points shaving.
Betting to win, playing to win, is the same to me.
If Rose only bet to win, put him in the HOF, he has served his time

Perfectly put. Nothing to argue on that. In fact, the death penalty for Shoeless and Pete have been carried out.

I realize this topic is dormant but it is my understanding that the Hall of Fame has now lifted the ban on Rose and Jackson. I won’t argue whether it is proper or not but I think it stinks that the Hall waited until Rose was dead to lift the ban so he can’t enjoy the honor if he is voted in. He is a no brainer based on his record as a player. I won’t argue one way or the other regarding the issues that may keep him out. I just thought it was a bit perverse to lift the ban after he was dead. I don’t know anything about his family. I suppose he has surviving family that will appreciate him being honored. Of course Jackson has been dead for over half a century and I have no idea if he has any remotely close surviving kin who would care.

We really do not know “how” Pete bet, do we? He was in a position to negatively or positively affect the outcome of a game. You may feel differently, that is okay, but for me, I think the ban was needed for Rose to not be around the game, I am not sure that he should have a lifetime ban on the HOF though.

We don’t put gamblers in prison for life. Why the HOF for life?

Messed up priorities about right and wrong in society. What do we expect? A guy bets on some games and is vilified for life. There are so many professional athletes that are morally corrupt, being with multiple women, having kids with some of them, doing all kinds of other stuff and nothing happens to them. It doesn’t make any sense.

Don’t be shocked at the things you will see going forward…

Your moral aprobium is reasonably well placed I think.
But the difference between betting on the game and the other kinds of stuff you mentioned are substantially different.
Being a rip-roaring drunkard while attempting to field balls in an outfield, if I remember correctly Babe claimed a few swigs helped him play better, does not affect the game: systemically to use a modern phrase. The others, while morally reprehensible, affect our view of the particular actors not the actual game we came to be entertained by.

We make a big deal of alcohol, tobacco, etc. in our religion and that is okay to have a “word of wisdom” that tells us those things are not good for our physical bodies. I think it is unfortunate that, because of their visible nature, they have become a focal point. Why is it unfortunate? because it has the effect of negating or downplaying less obvious things that are more easily hidden but can be more damaging to ourselves and those around us. Pornography is way more damaging to the physical and emotional psyche of members of the church in my opinion. Covetousness is way more damaging as well. Those are things that are not so easily seen but do have more damaging consequences. I think the brethren have tried to speak about these topics in the past and warn of their effects but I don’t think people want to hear it or listen because the truth cutteth the guilty to the very core.

My two cents.

I used to explain on my mission that the WOW is more than abstinence from alcohol, tobacco, drugs, etc. it includes more, by eating healthy, with more grains and fruits and less processed foods. It is a “health style” so to speak.

I always loved it when members would get on me for drinking diet coke, when they were overweight and could not walk up the stairs to church. FYI, being overweight is not in accordance with the WOW either. But no one talks about that, do they?

But the bottom line to the WOW is that “ANYTHING” (video games, TV, Pornography, lust for wealth, etc.) that becomes can become an addiction is wrong and not in accordance with the WOW.

As for Pete Rose, I view that his ban in baseball was just, because it is just like those that cheat in Business to get ahead, Pete took advantage of inside knowledge. Which put baseball in a bad position in view of the public.
