Doubtful Jackson tried to throw any games. He actually had a great World Series, however, he took money along with the rest of the Black Sox. He may have been illiterate but he was an adult and had to know what was going on. It’s unfortunate he got involved and prematurely ended his career but the commissioner ruled that anybody who was involved in gambling on games was banned and that anybody with knowledge about a conspiracy to throw games would be banished. The Hall has been very consistent about a no tolerance policy about gambling on games. The eight Black Sox were not the only ones banished in 1921. There were a number of others banned because fixing games for money had been going on for several years. Even Ty Cobb and Tris Speaker who were the biggest stars in the game, at the time, were under investigation.
Babe Ruth became the games’ biggest star by 1920 and took the public’s mind off the scandal Judge Landis got rid of all the known crooked players and baseball entered what was called its golden era.
I have no problem with them being banned from MLB corporation. The Hall is a different group is it not? It’s a group of sports writer, isn’t it? They can be recognized concerning their work on the field. Did baseball also throw out any of their records as well? I don’t think so.
How is that a problem. We are all betting on our teams to win, we are all trying to win.
100% agree, But other then the league banning gambling all together, betting on your team to win is not different to me then not betting at all. what am I missing?
Stop using logic. I’m not for gambling in any form. But, as it is used in this context, I agree. A little more motivation to work and try harder to win. Point shaving and gambling not to win is where the problem exists. Put Rose and Shoeless Joe in the HOF.
What if you bet on your team to lose? Then you didn’t try hard or purposely made errors or outs. Everything about gambling is shady. I hate to see it in sports, but when it comes to money it will be hard to get rid of
Yeh it’s too bad and a lot of athletes become victims of crime syndicates that make a lot of money and leave the athletes with little. Look how much Ohtani lost-close to 20 million if what we a hearing are the actual facts
Only if you are betting to lose, points shaving.
Betting to win, playing to win, is the same to me.
If Rose only bet to win, put him in the HOF, he has served his time
