Pre season rankings. BYU

How the forecasted ranking of top men’s college basketball teams for 2025-26 is changing

#6 is a bit rich for me. We will se when the transfer dust is settled.

BYU still needs another point. Wright and Baker are all we have at the moment. What I read about Crawford makes no sense to me, Duquesne? That to me would be like leaving BYU for UVU. This kid either is home sick (new Hampshire) or he just does not trust KY to play him. Personally, I think with Demin and Hall gone, Crawford should be looking at running the show at BYU where he knows the system and has great chemistry with teammates

Crawford wouldn’t be starting over Wilson, a 5 star and great freshman season with Baylor. But, he would be first off the bench as a great dual.

We say we need another big. Staton isn’t coming to BYU to be another Catchings. He’s coming to play and will back up Keba. Boskovic can play the five if needed. So can AJ for that matter.

Saunders is the key right now. Saunders comes back and we are a possible top 5 team. We will be deep again.

Makes no sense to me either. He would be a natural to back up Wright. Maybe he just doesn’t care for the culture. A lot of athletes over the years tried BYU for a year or two and then left. The Y isn’t for everybody.

The other problem could be he wants to be the guy. The direction BYU is headed he would always be a role player. Maybe a starter for a year or two but nevertheless a role player. At Duquesne he would be the starting point guard and maybe the star of the team. Four star recruits expect to step right in and start and eventually be the top dog. Crawford was never going to be that at BYU. Sometimes you find guys like Saunders who have some talent but constantly work to improve and become stars, but who start out as valuable role players and are happy to be role players.. A lot of high level recruits expect the red carpet treatment from day one. That may not be the case with Crawford but I think it may have been the case with Catchings.

Not sure about Catchings. Going to Georgia is going to see him have to compete at a high level too. He would have gotten playing time at BYU this year. He has to work harder at his strength and then be a better ball handler as well.

The name Elijah should give us a clue but I agree. don’t think the honor code is the issue, going to Stanford says to me that he has smart people pointing out the value of a degree from Stanford so he is no dummy . I understand Hall leaving because he can run a team but Crawford mathematically would be getting 20+ minutes a game on a team what will have everyone coming to see AJ. I have not been able to talk to my insiders so I am in the dark here

I’m hoping we can get a better player than Crawford. I really didn’t see all that much from him. We do need another point guard.

Then I see what Linardi has in his 1st 2026 projection:

He has BYU as a #2 seed.
A lot of expectations for BYU with a roster made of 3 new starters. AJ, Wright and Davis along with all star Richie Saunders and center Keiba means BYU has tons of Potential and offense but the big question will be, can these guys gel and play to each other’s strengths.

unlike Jim, I was sold on KY and his recruits from the get-go. I had the opportunity to watch several practices and see first hand how the new Transfers would fit in. Going back almost a year ago, I remember that BYU had a core of starters that remained after the dust settled of Mark Pope leaving and the hiring of KY.
The first thing KY did was secure starters Hall and Saunders. That was KEY!
I looked at the roster, we had coming back Knell, Hall, Baker, Saunders and Foos…
2023-24 BYU Cougars Men’s Roster and Stats | College Basketball at Sports-Reference.com

We had lost Waterman- easy to replace-he was a 3 pt specialist.
our biggest loss- Robinson followed Pope to Kentucky.
Spencer Johnson to graduation. our best defender
and lastly, Khalifa, great passer and 3pt specialist.

but the guys KY brought in:
Keba for Khalifa- huge upgrade, Khalifa had no lateral movement due to a bum.
Saunders took over where Robinson left and Mag completely changed the script with his defense. He was my MVP even before the season started I could see Mag as the reason why BYU would win more games. My big question was, We knew Mag’s lock down D but Catchings would be the starter at the 3 because of his reputation and that was a failure, once Mag got the nod, BYU beat Az and ISU at their place and had we played TTU, we would of beat them as well. all because of Mag.
Demin saved his best for last, in the Big 12 tourny as well as the Dance. So not only did BYU replace all of our scoring prowess, We added enough D to get Dance 2 wins. Think about it. Spencer Johnson and Saunders were our two D stoppers, We now had Mag, Saunders, Stewart and Keba. and towards the end, Boskovic was getting good minutes.
What is lost on me was how the media completely missed on how good BYU would be this last season. We had a core that got us to the dance in 2023…and added 2 NBA recruits, a defensive stopper and a true rim protecter and the media whiffed again.

Today:
How is this team different vs. last season?
We will miss Foos impossible to stop inside scoring and no one to fill that void. We will miss Knell’s 3 point frenzies. And we will miss Demin/Hall’s running the show. And Mag’s D.
Our core of Saunders, Keba, Boskovic and Baker. About 40% of last season’s output. Add 3 players that average close to 16ppg EACH, all stars on their past teams so in terms of experience, BYU may be a little ahead of last years team.
Why do I think BYU will make a jump over last year. Easy anwser:
KY was clear when he said, “I learned that college Defense is key in winning the Big 12 or going far into the Dance”. Paraphrasing.
BYU will not be hiding players like we did in the past. all of the new guys are quick, explosive and are going to get lots of open looks because teams will have to double AJ. Players like Boskovic will be big games this season. I predict that he will become the offensive threat that Mag worked into. Mag was not supposed to score and yet, he developed a 40% 3. Kboup could be his replacement on D

BYU has, I think, 2 more spots to fill. We need one more big and one more 3 point specialist.
This guy would be a great addition:

Dominick Harris from UCLA in interesting, 44% from 3 and 6’6.

You left out Dominic and Davis and Wilson. All three can shoot and at the point a huge improvement on D as well as shooting. Assists will come from everyone. And seems like people are underestimating Staton, a 7 footer. Can’t teach 7 feet. This will be a fun team to watch.

how dare you… haha.

I don’t remember saying anything about the recruits but I did comment about the KY learning curve. He did a lot of things early on that didn’t make sense and BYU lost some games they probably shouldn’t have but he got it figured out for the most part. The best part of this was that he acknowledged the same thing. Being humble and willing to learn from mistakes is the hallmark of a great coach. He is doing the job.

In the KSL interview aired at least twice last Saturday, which means things may have changed, KY said he is looking for more ball handling talent which I translated as PG, but given his love of having more than one competent ball handler on the floor at a given time may mean another shooting guard that like Baker can step into the point on occasion.
Not sure why he would use that phrasing if the intent is to sign a pure point.

I agree another big is needed for depth, but the KSL interview yesterday also skipped saying he is looking for a big…very curious to me…

besides being an assistant for the suns, KY was the head coach of the 3 different D league teams. What I saw from KY unlike mark Pope, KY would change things up when the other team had a run or BYU was in a shooting slump. Pope would just keep hucking up 3s and hope some would fall.
His words after the NCAA run shows that he is a exceptional learner. Coming from an NBA background and the way the NBA game is played with a 24 sec shot clock. It’s a “outscore” your opponent type of game and each team has 2 or more elite players that can create a shot anytime they need it. . College is 30 secs and few teams have elite scorers so D is as important as O…not so in the NBA so KY took note and is attempting to keep 0 (BYU was #6 nationally last year) but recruit speed and tough nose D.

KY a year ago was faced with Khalifa or Foos, he chose Foos and let Khalifa go..to get Keba (who is a athletic freak)
Same thing, Keep Waterman (who is a taller version of Knell) or get Mag, a lock down defender, takes their best player and neutralizes them.

100%
Baker is plenty good handling the ball but looks to score 1st, pass 2nd while Wright and Davis
