SPOTTED: No. 1 recruit AJ Dybantsa attends BYU vs. Arizona game as part of his official visit (sportskeeda.com)

Along with AJ, JJ Mandaquit, his roommate and point guard for Utah Prep academy and Team USA. BYU has also offered JJ.

KY, AJ, JJ ran onto the field along with the team. Steve Young is introducing BYU football, along with Nacua, Fred Warner.

What a time for a blowout!

go cougs

much of the talk is about AJ and his NIL pricetag…
so I have wondered about actual normal levels of NIL
Can BYU Afford to Bet Big on AJ Dybantsa’s Enormus NIL Demand?
This is the best answer I have come across…though given the breadth of sources necessary to answer the question and their need to remain anonymous who knows how accurate any of it is…

Though it does seem to show that all conference player in the top conferences should be able to pay off a house in most of their locations with a bit of planning and disciple, not a bad start with a decent education.

Robby McCombs on X: “AJ Dybantsa went on Paul George’s podcast for 40 minutes. Super interesting to hear from AJ. Shows the type of prospect he is — NBA guys aren’t out there interviewing high school players. AJ said he will commit “soon.”” / X

AJ committing soon…interesting news…dramatic change from earlier statements…

I can see him fitting in next year…but what does it mean for Brodie’s future?
Assuming JJ comes too…PG next year is crowded…Hall, Crawford, JJ…an embarrassment of riches…Assuming of course that Demin for some reason does not stay around…

There are 3 players on BYU’s team that could be termed “one and done”
Egor
Boscovic
Catchings

Catchings is a true Fr. both Egor and Boskovic have 3 years playing pro basketball, so they would be equivalent Sr.s this season. Boskovic has not been cleared due to Professional pay, and BYU is working on it. He may never suit up as he tried out for NBA Sac. last year and is eager to get to the NBA-hence the BYU route.

I see BYU as getting a freak year out of Egor-gone, ? on Boskovic. Catchings may stay one season or one more year, depending on if he can break the starting lineup and combust. he has all the skills the NBA wants but needs some meat on his bones and to work on D.

AJ is truely a generational player. He would be BYU’s 4 million $$ man and gone after one year.
K st is in the mix…Kansas opted out.
Kansas head coach Bill Self has a straightforward reason for passing up on AJ Dybantsa

I have seen or heard national pundits mention this about both Demin and Catchings…the Y guys did an interview of Mark Durrant. It was interesting in that each of the three participants had different views of the team and its possibilities, (though like the national punditry who bother to care about BYU), they agree the potential is far above BYU’s average as far as athleticism, the questions everybody has is how well the team will gel, the rotations, and a first time coach…

Having been to Young’s practices, I can say this:
Young focuses on two things: On D, he works everyone daily on the 3 man “Pic and slide” defense. everyone has to practice this for 30 minutes each practice, they can run it in their sleep.

On O, Young does the opposite, He will have the luxury of 5 shooters on the floor and 2 point guards at any time so when he runs a pic, BYU will focus on the other teams weakest player (it’s the NBA game) to “Drag” them out on the edge, the offense can a) blow by, b) step back for a 3, c) blow by and kick out to a wide open 3.

Young will do just fine with these athletes…BYU will win a lot of games.

Okay, what is the scoop on Hall? Is he out for the season? What’s with the foot-ankle?

Tom L: 1. Dallin was in a boot with a recent foot injury. I can’t say what I was told but doesn’t look like a long term problem.

BYU basketball: Chamberlain Burgess commits to the Cougars – Deseret News

Nephew of Coach Chris Burgess, Chamberlain plans on serving a mission 1st. good, he needs to fill out. has a great 3 point shot, good at cleanup around the boards. No mid range that I can see, would get pushed around underneath.

2nd major step in a solid long term plan…(Kozlowski, and the returning players being the first major step) lock up the best of the locals/church members nationwide for a firm foundation, and bring in the Demin, Catchings, Crawford types to put the spice on the top for strong records and deep runs.

At the practice I attended, Keba ran with the “1s” the entire time, paired with Richie, Catchings, Egor, and Baker. Egor ran the point the entire scrimmage. Baker was in for Hall who was watching with a boot. I’m told he’s “good to go when it matters.” All of the 1s were extremely impressive in their roles. Keba is otherworldly from a pure strength and athleticism standpoint. I remember meeting Karl Malone on the court and he’s the only guy I’ve ever met who looked like Keba. This offense was built for Keba and he clearly understands it. He was awesome. He and Egor made everything easy for the 3 wing shooter.

The 2s that day were:

  1. Elijah–SUPER athletic, great ballhandler, and has a beautiful mid range pull up jumper off the dribble. He looked really, REALLY good. I hope KY gets him minutes because I’ll cry like a baby if he can’t get time behind Dallin and Egor and transfers next year.
  2. Knell–made some nice 3s. I don’t see how he can possibly get big minutes but my guy in the program thinks he may be better in a more limited role and is a great teammate.
  3. Bosko-he’s AWESOME but also NOT eligible and I wouldn’t hold my breath despite all the rumors out there. Definitely looked like a 23 year old pro scrimmaging against kids.
  4. Koz-Very strong for a freshman. Not a beanpole. Tough rebounder. Couldn’t stay with Richie or Catchings or Baker, so hurt us at times on D when other guys had to rotate to help. Good 3 pt shooter. Another guy who looks like a really good player. With Bosko ineligible, I think Koz has a path to being a rotation player.
  5. Fouss-It was fun watching him and Keba brawl. We have two outstanding posts in those guys!
Agree with Fish–we will win a bunch of games.

Confused here. So, was Baker playing point or was Egor? Hall is a point guard.

Hall was in a boot watching.
Egor ran the point for the 1s. He is the Russian Magic Johnson with his size, ballhandling, vision, and passing.
Baker played off the ball–he, Catchings, and Richie were all interchangeable wings in the offense.

My guess is Egor and Hall both start with Baker coming off the bench. Baker is instant offense with the ball in his hands. He may hold it too long like Fouss sometimes does, but, like Fouss, Baker can get his shot off against almost anyone at any time. Super super skilled player.

Has Knell’s defense improved? If he can play defense and shoot 50% from 3’s he’s going to get playing time.
What little we say if Baker last year, he is as quick as anyone we have had before on the drive. I can see well rested players at the end of games with the depth we have.

Knell tried hard but struggled to stay with his guy (Richie, Catchings, or Baker). Knell won’t shoot 50% considering not a single qualifying D1 player shot 50% last year (only 2 shot over 45% and only 9 shot over 43%). Knell is a career 38% 3pt shooter and shot only shot 38% and 36% in his two previous seasons. Knell should get lots of open looks because of our upgrade in scorers on the court, so if he can’t shoot 38-40% I doubt he keeps getting minutes.

Baker is a scorer, plain and simple. He has tons of quickness with the ball in his hands and has all the moves to get his shot off. He has a hesitation dribble, step-back, fallaway, turnaround, etc; he has all the moves, even in the paint surrounded by big guys trying to stop him.

I have always said that you can “Hide” Knell on this team with all the rebounding height and defenders. He may even start as he did past years, but I really care who finishes games and Knell ain’t it

Bosko- we gotta find a way, he would make BYU final 4, just sayin

Well, BYUTV is cheap. Why aren’t they showing the game tonight? We get some info from the radio but they are often talking about other stuff and not the game. Sounds like Egor is pretty much a facilitator and has missed some open 3s. Catchings is scoring at will. Baker hasn’t done anything from what I’ve heard. Saunders started off great. Crawford is making plays. Knell is hitting 3s. Keba is swatting stuff. 42 - 12 at halftime.

Well, Knell played well, shot well. I was hoping that we would break 100 against this team. And, they scored way too much in the 2nd half. A lot to work on. Egor hardly scored as well. Lot’s of assists.
