Ryder Burton is hitting the portal

it appears Ryder has had his fill of ARod recruiting QB’s through the portal and not developing the QB that he has.

This is one of the reason why I don’t think much will change on offense until ARod is shown the door.

go ahead hopper, try to spin it differently.

Another Utah bread QB that can’t handle the competition. I remember Steve Young was at one time 7th on the depth chart. He didn’t say anything about what his reason is. That’s you stating a reason for him.

Nice try… but as usual a total bust on spinning.

ARod has recruit 4-Star QB’s only to sit on the bench and not teach them, because AROD is lazy and does not want to put the work into developing his QB’s it is easier to recruit from the portal for guys “SOMEONE ELSE” taught.

And before you say anything, Both Jaren Hall and Zack Wilson were taught by John Beck, not AROD.

Jacob Conover - 4 star was recruited by Alabama and Ole Miss, came to BYU and never used. When they did need a backup, they choose Billups and Sol-Jay Maiava-Peters. The next year, ARod brought in Slovis and Retzlaff who became 1-2, so he left.

Burton is a 4 Star QB - You do not get that ranking by not wanting competition. His dream school was BYU, so he came over other bigger schools offer. What does he find in the past two years that he was at BYU? ARod brought in Slovis, Ratzlaff, Bohanon and now USU Hillstead. Again, He is benched in favor of transferred QB’s

You cannot say he is afraid of competition when the QB coach says right at the beginning of Spring practice that the Starting position is between Ratzlaff and Bohanon.

Your right, Burton is a class type guy.

But AROD has a proven track record that he does not know how to develop QB’s. He has recruited and lost 4 Star QB three times Romney, Conover, and not Burton.

AROD Recruits:
Romney - Transferred - played a few games.
Critchlow - Transferred - played a few games.
Conover - Transferred - played a few games.
Sol-Jay - Transferred - played a few games.
Burton - in Transfer portal
Hall - played four years, spent most summers with John Beck
Wilson - played four years, spent most summers with John Beck
Neither Wilson nor Hall says ARod improved their skills, they always say it was John Beck program.

AROD Transfers
Ratzlaff - backup last year, contention for starting.
Bohanon - transferred in contention for starting.
Slovis - Transferred in and was anointed the starter.
Finnegan - Transferred in.
Hilstead - just transferred in.
Billups - transferred in, didn’t do much, transferred out.

Do you see a trend here? None of AROD recruits have ever been truly in contention for the starter position. Wilson and Hall were selected, mostly because Grimes was the OC at the time.

As long as AROD is OC, BYU will struggle in the BIG 12. He has proven that he is willing to throw the players under the bus for his poor coaching decisions. He is out coached in most of his games last year and if it were not for some luck and hard work by the players, I could of seen BYU go winless in conference.

You are forgetting one major thing. The changes in transferring rules and the NIL. Two major changes where building a starting QB from scratch has changed. It’s you who doesn’t want to change. I get that. Change is hard for many.
The QB transfer ins you want to trash were 4 and possibly 5 star players. I also want you to hopefully understand Wilson and Hall were instructed how to better throw the football. But, they didn’t work with Beck on actually performing in games with 11 players on offense and a defense that wants to hurt you. We’ve had 5 star QBs that could throw the ball but not so well in games. Remember?

Not forgetting a thing…
The fact that AROD recruits have all transferred is a direct reflection on his ability to develop QB’s. Using NIL or the portal is just an excuse for letting ARod off the hook for his incompetence.

Both Wilson and Hall stated that after games, they would talk to Beck. later in the week, Beck would send his analyst of the game that was just played. This is all documented.

Please name this 5-star QB that BYU had under ARod time?

Jake Heaps. 5 Starr QB.
There are a lot of top 4 and 5 star QBs that went to BYU over the past 40 years that never made it. Some transferred as well before Arod. Long before Arod. This isn’t new. It’s just the numbers of transfers is higher as well because of the portal rules and the NIL.

Let me also help you with another fallacy of yours. John Beck does not try to run over Arod. He compliments what Arod is doing. Beck works on mechanics within Arod’s system. Beck also helps other QBs from all over the country.

There are great potential athletes who are even successful under other schools and their great coaches who transfer out as well. That’s how we get some top QBs, running backs and receivers. Are you saying Puka’s former coach at Washington was terrible? Your myopic look on what’s going on in college sports is astounding.

Jake Heaps was under Bronco Mendenhall, the OC at the time was Doman!
BTW, Heaps was a 4-star recruit per 247 sports

Jake Heaps, Seattle, Quarterback (247sports.com)

Name some of the 4- and 5-star QB’s who has left? The only one that I know of was Heaps and the other was Ben Olsen both of whom were a 4-star players.

Heaps left because of the issues between Mendenhall and Doman (Mendenhall wanted Nielson, Doman wanted Heaps), Doman was not “retained” as QB and OC coach the following year.

Olsen left because Crowton promised both Ben and his dad that he was going to be the starter before the Utah State game. Crowton went back on his word, and while Ben was serving his mission, his dad convinced him to transfer to UCLA.

The fact about both Olsen and Heaps, on the field they weren’t very good. They had their chances. Even Olsen at UCLA wasn’t all that good either. This is a problem with trying to say players are great at the high school level will be great in college. If Burton was so great, he should have. Even able to stand out this spring ball. He didn’t.

Stop deflecting from the original post.

No deflection. It’s pertinent to the conversation. It’s the truth about those so called 5 start QBs. When they came out of high school, they were 5 start QBs. Don’t know why they would now be listed as 4 stars.

Where in the world do you get this notion from? And what exactly is “Arod’s system”?

I don’t understand why you keep defending Roderick? What has he actually done to deserve the defense of his coaching abilities and game planning?

BYU blew so many golden and honestly easy, opportunities to win games and become bowl eligible last season. How can you defend the obvious gross errors in judgement on the offensive side of the ball the entire season?

Stop doing it and start dealing with reality. If it happens again this season… I mean if the QB throws a pick 6 on the goal line in an obvious running situation where scoring easily was a no brainer… if that happens or anything like it happens multiple times this season, things need to change.

It’s ridiculous at this level to have that kind of stuff going on. We are supposedly a big time program now and BYU is coaching like they still belong in the mid major discussion.

You keep showing you know very little of what Beck does. Fortune, some of us watch BYUSN and hear them talking about their roles. Beck helps with the mechanics within the system the QB is playing in.

The rest of your post is nonsense. But nice try.

Funny, Beck does not talk about “what he does” on BYU SN, he talks about the QB abilities that are at BYU. Please provide one link from BYUSN to verify what you said.

Beck does not work within ANYONE’s System, he can’t for the simple reason there are too many “Systems” out there to try to work on. What Beck does do, is teach the QB the 4 legs of the performance that will create an efficient Quarterback for any system. For a lack of a better term, call it teaching fundamentals of being a great QB.

I know you will argue about this, but there is a different meaning between what is “Working within a system” and what will “Work for any system”.

The 4 legs of performance are:

  1. Functional Strength and Conditioning
  2. Mechanics and Motion analysis
  3. Nutrition
  4. Motion

And before you try to spin this, I took this information directly off of John Beck company website.

So “NO” John Beck has never said what he does is work within ARod’s system on BYUSN. He simply states what fundamentals he has worked with on the QB in question.

They did not change the star rating, I went back and looked at articles about both of these players during the time frame they were to BYU and guess what? they referred to them as 4-star QB’s.

I think your age is affecting your memory.

Hopper got owned.

Floyd with the facts, Hopper with the nonsense.

End of this story.

Jake Heaps was a 5 Star Recruit.
Ben Olsen was a 5 Star.

Jun 28, 2018 — NFL Draft 2024: Every 5star recruit selected in the first round · 1. Caleb Williams | QB | Jr. | USC · 2. Drake Maye | QB | R-Soph. | North …

The website didn’t talk about whether or not they also may help QB’s withing the offense they are or will be running. So, you can’t say for sure, can you?

Yea, Cougar board is always a good source of “truth”… LOL
Since BYU uses 247Sports ranking to evaluate players:

Jake Heaps 4-Star:
Jake Heaps, Seattle, Quarterback (247sports.com)

Ben Olsen:
You were right, he was 5 Star

But the point remains Hopper, both these guys played for BYU before AROD. My point was that of all the QB ARod recruited, they have all transferred out because he has not developed any of them. Because he relies on the portal to find the quick fix.

Yes, I can because that is what John Beck puts on his website… They teach fundamental basics to improve the QB abilities that can be used in multiple of systems.

They may do more as well. You don’t know that. The rating said Heaps was a 5 star. I know the old timers have a problem with the transfer portal. It’s here to stay. Money is taking over and college sports will look way different soon after that lawsuit is done.

I don’t have the dates but I’m nearly certain that Wilson signed in 2017 and Hall committed 2016. That was before Arod even showed up. Those two guys were gifted to him. Both recruited by Detmer and coached by Beck.

But Kalani is perfectly fine with it so we need to accept it. I lost a lot of respect for Kalani when his team FACEPLANTED last year and his solution was to send Arod to fire the TE coach who was one of the best recruiters and most popular coaches on the staff. Kalani has hitched his Ride or Die wagon to Arod, for better or worse. I’ll be very impressed if we can win 5 games again.

You are correct,
Jaren Hall committed to BYU in 2014 and signs his LOI in 2016. “BUT” he did not enroll at BYU 2018 because he served a mission and Zac Wilson Signed his LOI in 2017.

This is all documented by 247 Sports which is the recruiting service BYU uses.

ARod came back to BYU in 2017 as a “consultant”. then moved to Passing Game Coordinator/QB coach in 2018 and finally OC/QB coach in 2021

As you can see neither Arod couldn’t have recruited Zac or Jaren because he was not a position to do so.

My feeling is the firing of Clark had nothing to do with Kalani wanting him gone. I believe the issue was between Clark and ARod.

If you remember, Clark was a very good OC before coming to BYU. I believe the “face plant” you speak of, is what caused the riff between Clark and ARod. So, ARod went to Kalani whining and Kalani said the offense is yours, deal with it. Thus, Clark was let go.

ARod was “FIRED TWICE” from Utah by Kyle, that should have sent RED FLAGS all up and down Kalani spine about hiring him.

Thanks for the backstory. Didn’t know about Arod getting canned twice by Benedict Arnold, but not surprising. And I appreciate the confirmation of what I thought: that Arod had nothing to do with recruiting either NFL QB, and has in fact not recruited a single HS QB to BYU who has had ANY impact on the field.

BYU has never been and cannot be great in football with a great QB. If the OC can’t recruit and develop great QBs, I don’t care about ANY other seemingly good qualities he may have. None. It’s a mystery to me why ANY high school QB would sign with BYU right now.
