I think you’re mistaken. Bear Bachmaier, or Ryder Lyons, could beat any college team with their high school teams.
I can’t believe that men older than I am here still buy into hype. I expected to beat Stanford, but I didn’t think we would jack stomp them. Each game is a unique game and we play them for a reason and don’t just turn it over to ESPN to simulate. Teams prepare and try to win, and sometimes they play out of their heads or lay an egg.
We could beat East Carolina handily on the road, or we could lose to them next week. Neither outcome would surprise me.
Tough sledding tonight for Bachmaier is good experience for him, because he’s got NG to face tougher teams. Hopefully he stays for four years, but I doubt it.
Defense: A+ Forced three TO’s, gave up 3 points. Glasker and Kelly were awesome. Tanuvasa is looking really good at DT.
Offense: C. No TO’s, but we could have had a couple. Bear looked ok - I thought he had a couple nice second half passes where he had to read the defense. LJ and Moa ran well. People commented on our struggling O Line. Maybe that’s true. But I think our play calling was the real problem. Stanford put 8-9 guys in the box all game and we didn’t know how to make them pay.
Overall a frustrating but satisfying game at the same time. My older brother (not Tom) who graduated from Stanford and isn’t a member of the church called me at halftime and told me he was rooting for BYU.
I understand that Arod is not showing everything until Colorado but he will have to open it up against East Carolina. I haven’t looked at EC yet but if they have a decent QB, we could be in some trouble. I don’t think our DB are reacting quick enough. The good thing is that we have a week off and hopefully clean up mistakes and somehow get our receivers to leave the butter home.
BYU ran a plain vanilla offense. Understandable with a true freshman QB. I don’t think the o-line was that bad, not real good yet, but not that bad.
Bachmeier was only playing his 2nd college game and although Stanford is not good they were a huge upgrade over Portland St. The games get increasingly tougher and hopefully Bear shows a significant improvement as the season goes on. He still hasn’t committed a turnover so that is good. Right now I think he is being asked to be a game manager since we appear to have a lights out defense.
I don’t think our weakness on defense has been exposed because of terrible quarterbacks. Many really poor passes last night kept Stanford out of the end zone. We have 2 weeks to improve our pass defense and our play calling.
Any improvements or adjustments on the defensive side of the ball will happen because we have a defensive coordinator that knows how to coach. He will make the adjustments and the defense will improve over the course of the season. They have given up 3 points so far…
Any improvements or adjustments on the offensive side of the ball…. not sure what will happen there because I’m not sure there is ever a game plan or a strategy. The plan seems to be to call random plays, mixed in with some gadgetry nonsense, in an effort to keep the opponent guessing. I don’t think that is a plan at all and I still don’t think BYU has an offensive coordinator that can consistently call a good game and put the offense in a position to be effective. It is too disjointed and haphazard and it will cost BYU more than one win this season.
I hope I am wrong on that but it is very frustrating to watch the obvious, sure play call be tossed aside for some thoughtless, random gadget play that fails because it isn’t called at the right time or it makes no sense. Examples I can distinctly remember were the bizarre PAT after the first touchdown (why on earth?) and the shotgun lineup after LJ was stopped (he actually crossed the goal line but the clueless officials insisted on running up and marking it at the 1 foot line) that resulted in a false start penalty and subsequent field goal. BYU couldn’t score a touchdown twice from inside the 5 yard line! If you are at the 1 foot line and you have a 225 lb QB, put him behind center and ram it across the goal line! At least we have a great field goal kicker…
Every year it is the same old nonsense of stupid calls, at the worst time, that make no sense! I am frankly tired of watching it happen over and over. I think Sitake would be tired of it as well but he doesn’t seem to care as long as the team wins the game… I don’t like that perspective. BYU seems content to accept the inevitable because there is no accountability for the nonsense.
what I saw was the offence of 2023, 02-04. a s#i%* oline, an offense with no heart and no killer spirt. they were all meh. all I can say is get ready for a long year. I think we will get 6 wins but it isn’t going to be pretty
we’re all going to blame this on Arod but I want to go to the next level and say that Kalani is also the problem. after hearing what you all said he is like Witt and controls his OC. I can totally see it. I have a little more proof that this is the case. I have noticed that Arod looks and acts defeated after a big decision is made. I think he wants to do something different and Kalani won’t let him. I am not saying that Arod is a good OC, but maybe he would be a little better with out Kalani trying to control it.
the good news is that the new AD isn’t like the last one. I hear he isn’t some mr nice guy like holmoe. he wants to win make sure BYU is always at the top. I think we could see a change if we suck it up for the next 2 years even 1 year.

Relax, we don’t know anything after just two games. I think BYU wins 8 to 10 games this year before the bowl game. The Big 12 isn’t that good this year.. ASU, KSU, and West Virginia all lost games they were favored to win. The KSU and West Virginia losses were embarrassing. ASU allows a long bomb with about 40 seconds left. Not a real good day for the conference.
The only bright spots were Baylor’s big comeback against SMU and Iowa State’s close win over a middle of the pack Big Ten Iowa team. Everybody else bullied weak opponents.
Frankly BYU’s defense and specials teams gives a chance to win all their games if the offense improves.
I will take responsibility for lighting a fire and Fernk reacting to it, but if someone can give me a different perspective I am all ears. I think BYU can win 8 games and yes, maybe even 10. It will be up to the defense to do it because the offense looks the same as it always does, even with better athletes and more experience from the rest. Its like dejavu all over again… haha.
The players are different but the approach is the same and it will end up with the same results, if not worse, because the defense can’t do it all every game. I really wish I knew what the issue is, whether it is Kalani trying to control everything or Roderick not knowing how to call a game but it is one of those or something close to it. BYU has the talent and the players, they have the defense too. They just need an offense that utilizes the talents of the players and flows.
I think Fernk might be on to something with Roderick and Kalani. Maybe the former is simply a yes man. Time MAY tell but it also might not.
It’s possible I’ll be singing a different tune. Like I said we don’t know much yet. It generally takes 4-5 games to know how good a team is. Last year we didn’t know anything until after the 4th game against KSU. The wins over SIU and Wyoming weren’t very impressive and nobody knew SMU was good when BYU beat them.
I find guys on this board overreact to things. They either get too high after a good win or too gloom and doom if we don’t win or don’t win as impressively as people think they should.
ESPN had us favored to win every game but Iowa St. after last weeks games.
If we don’t know anything after two games, how do we know the Big 12 isn’t that good this year?
What we do know is that the offense looks disjointed and erratic, just like it has for the past few years and the defense looks very good (just like it has) and will have to carry the team to those 8 or 10 victories you speak of. Maybe Kalani thinks he can dance his way to job security but if BYU really wants to be special it will take more than a two step jitterbug before every game.
Had I not seen the same pattern, as the past few years, that we saw in the Stanford game I would not be writing anything. In fact I would be commenting on how it was nice to see some offensive flow and rational play calling… but I didn’t. We couldn’t score a touchdown from inside the 5 yard line (or one foot line) twice and if not for a very good field goal kicker, would have been looking at a 14-3 final against a very pedestrian team in Stanford, who will not likely win more than a game or two.
I just have to say we weren’t going to show much of the offense the first 2 or 3 games. We will have to in 2 weeks at EC. Their QB is much better than the first two games. And my take is our DB aren’t as quick as in the past. Not as fast either. We will have to put pressure on the QB. And we will have to throw down field a lot more. Open up the run game.
It isn’t about “showing the offense”. I don’t care if they run a vanilla playbook for the entire game. What I do care about is HOW they do it. Are the play calls helping enable a flow to the offense? Is there a gameplan to establish something? and force the defense to adjust? Is there a “little” or “very little” creativity to keep from showing too much offense?
All of that is possible without giving anything away but it didn’t happen and honestly it hasn’t happened the last several years now. So what is the common denominator? I don’t need to go into a diatribe again… I will just hope the defense can continue to create MULTIPLE opportunities for the offense to score because the offense can’t seem to create or manufacture their own opportunities. If the defense can just do enough to win games we can have a season like the last. I just hope KS realizes how lucky he is to have Jay Hill.
