Hogwash
If byu can’t beat them by 30. We are in trouble
They were number 1 in defense in their division last year. We’ve seen so-called weak teams upend great teams. Nevada should have beaten SMU. We hope that our offense is ready to start playing tough and angry at the start of the this game.
Their division would be equal to big sky talent. Run em over
We really shouldn’t be discussing the possibility that this is a competitive game but here we are… doing it.
For decades BYU rolled teams like this. These are tune up games for the regular season. If BYU doesn’t win by at least 3 or 4 touchdowns then I don’t anticipate a great season. They should be ready to roll and put this game away early.
I’m not confident that will happen given the unsurety of the QB position and the OC making the play calls.
I’m sure. Don’t worry. Be happy.
LOL I haven’t seen a BYU team act like that sense Kalani became the head coach.
Since you like to always tell us to watch Sports Nation, didn’t you watch SN Season Preview?
specifically, the segment with Hans Olsen that said, and I quote “SIU lost a lot of talent on the defensive side” (around the 28-minute mark).
You are right, we should never underestimate a team regardless of what level they play, but the fact of the matter and the issue being discussed is that ARod and company will need to improve the offense tremendously to get the fans to forget about the late season meltdown last year.
Dennis Pitta was on BYUSN today and says keeping who starts isn’t important. The players know and that’s the only thing important.
Care to clarify? Are you saying that it is not important who starts?
I understand keeping the QB quiet, (see the article I posted about this), but to have “OR’s” on 1st string means that they cannot make up their minds. No decision can be as bad as making the wrong decision.
But what does that have to do with my point that “YOU” did not watch SN season preview, because if you had, you would have known that SIU lost a lot of defensive starters.
It’s not important for the armchair QBs to know. He’s correct on this. The team knows and that’s what is important. It’s not important to anyone that Floyd knows, right!
Well, there is the transport portal to fill the gaps. Vegas had BYU by 19.5 a few days ago. Today, 14.5. What do they know?
That comment is clearer than what you originally posted.
I’m even less confident now.
Do you know anything about betting lines?
Too many people are putting money on SIU at 19.5 underdogs so the odds swing in hopes that people will put money on BYU. It’s a numbers game and Vegas always ends up on top.
I seem to recall hearing EXACTLY the same stuff last year from ARod and Kalani leading up to week one. About how we shouldn’t underestimate Sam Houston State. Well, we all remember BARELY being able to beat SHSU and then SHSU winding up being one of the worst teams in all of D1.
Jim scores with his point that if we don’t win the FCS warmup/practice game by 3 or 4 TDs we should all worry.
Also good point about the line: bettors are laying money on S Illinois because the whole world knows BYU has chronically underachieved under KS, and they are betting accordingly (Jaren Hall’s 10-3 season was solid, beating a bunch of the bad P12 teams but at least they were real programs, unlike 2020 which I didn’t take seriously at the time and can’t take seriously now. But Kalani’s overall tenure is just pathetically—nothing. Definitely not great. Not even awful. Just nothing—totally unmemorable).
Blah, blah, blah…
Kalani holds onto friends too long. Tui should of been let go year one. ARod, year 3. With Big 12 $$$, we should be QB factory again and playing for real prominence rather than hoping for a bowl game.
I will hold my breath until the SMU game. a home game vs. a FCS team tells me nothing, hence, We should beat them by 30 comment. in reality, BYU will play vanilla and try not to show SMU anything. BTW, SMU tried the same thing vs. Nevada and nearly lost. SMU had O run game, had to really sling it at the end to avoid the loss. BYU should be encouraged when we play them.
Before the season I think ESPN had them as the 2nd toughest game on our schedule. That will all change this week. It all depends on our Oline and QB play starting Saturday
Much of last year’s woes can be attributed to the offensive and defensive lines. BYU couldn’t run and they couldn’t stop the run. They couldn’t protect their quarterback or put pressure on the opponent’s quarterback. As a result, they didn’t convert on third down and the defense struggled to get off the field. The combination of broken bodies and broken spirits led to five straight defeats to end the season. BYU football: Why Cougars’ QB1 battle isn’t the biggest issue – Deseret News
Your last paragraph reminds all that we lost our starting QB. Had he been healthy, certain plays called would not have happened. This year, I think we go 3 or 4 deep at QB.
did anyone see how snippy Kalani was this week with the media when they asked about the QB situation? To me it looks like there are a lot of problems and the cool headed Kalani is finally showing his frustration with it. I see no benefit to hold back who the QB is for SIU, you would only do this to gain some kind of advantage. If we are trying to gain an advantage with a team we should beat handily then we must be in a bad place with this offense and he knows it.
That is a direct quote from McCann and the D News. Last year we also had 5 deep QBs. Means nothing.
wait and see, right?
Me: Hill was very aggressive in the portal, I think he is always looking for an upgrade. Hurts that we lost Ben Bywater but Hill thinks our Linebackers are up to the task. (the real reason why BYU could not stop the run.)
We have 3 QBs that I think can get the job done. Retziaff worked with John Beck, so i am excited to see the results. Bohanan can regain his glory, we will see plenty of both. My Man, McCae Hillstead, may be small but is agile and pin point on his short passes.
