I loved Bronco for many reasons:
His “Band of Brothers” mentality.
His integrity
His ability to choose a plan and stick to it
His ability to navigate around a revolving missionary program is amazing.
but there were things I did not like:
He was a DC in reality turning too many things over to his OC and when he made HC decisions (like choosing to freeze an extra point kicker 3 times) there were some real dozzies that I still wonder about.
He showed little interest in connecting with BYU alumni. That in my book is fatal.
He spoke in a language that made smile and squirm at the same time. Think general authority/football coach all rolled into one.
Our next coach has to be an expert in one area above all. Recruiting LDS talent.
He has to tap into BYU alumni. He has to continue to farm the rich Poly pool. He has to do this or BYU will languish. Harmon says it best:
Secondly, he needs to continue the BYU legacy as QB central…I would love to see Niuimotalomo or Satake so long as they brought in a pro style OC. BYU has to continue to be the QB factory. Detmer, Young and Mac, we need you more then ever. I am confident that Holmoe will find the right guys.
I am alieved and fairly sure that Anae was never offered the HC because of his personality.
One last thing…I don’t understand how Bronco will recruit Poly talent to Virginia? Here and Cal, no problem, Poly’s have family here…but Virginia? It makes little sense to me. Anae, Atuaia and others? I doubt that Bronco will make that big of an impact at Virginia unless he recruits the talent around him in the East.
