But answer this question Jim…
How many games have San Diego won this year with those freshman? They are 9-9 so far and 2-4 in conference…
Even Duke has been beaten by a lesser team that should not have beaten them…
My point is that any team can beat any other team on a given night… No way should UTEP have beaten BYU in football in 1985, because BYU was the better team… But they did, didn’t they?
I understand your frustration with “Excuses”, I also understand that SD freshman and sophomores have never had a period of 2 years where they are not playing… Especially if their mission are in a foreign country, that takes a toll on the body… Ask Dastrap… he gain 40-60 lbs on his mission, his stamina is not good right now (according to my friend who is a big Cougar Club donor and has inside info).
My question, is why is Rose losing his upper class man? is it because as you have mentioned “Favoritism”? or is it because of PT? not sure, but the number of kids leaving the program to go elsewhere, is a bit concerning to me.
Personally I think Rose has reach his limit, we need a coach that holds the players accountable for their shot selection and effort on defense. If Rose can do that… Great, if not, well I will let Holmoe determine the action.
Go watch the game again Scott, in his first 10 times that he got the ball inside, he tried to shoot the ball…
So, I am not sure if you are just trying to yank my chain, but Blaine Fowler also made the same comment during the game.
Uggg…Floyd, put on your glasses! Blind umpires need them on!
Yes, but watch him hesitate too long. He needs to make his moves when he catches the ball. The double team makes it more difficult to shoot.
Also, if he moves right away and the double team comes, he’s more likely to have an open shooter or cutter.
The number of kids leaving programs of all kinds is way up over the last few years nationwide. Do you happen to know if the BYU transfer numbers are more or less than the nationwide stats?
Or is your concern just the general concern?
Not sure, because I do not follow other schools… but if you compare the last couple of years to previous years… I think it is higher than normal… That is all I am saying…
Here is an outsider view of how the LP is doing this year.
Tony Ingle
has won two national championships since leaving BYU.
Division II and NAIA
still wonder how it would have worked out with him instead of Cleveland
Are you suggesting that Tony Ingle replace Rose? He has done well at Dalton State College but at age 64, he may not plan to coach much longer. What do you think about Mark Pope? Pope is LDS and has a great rapport with his players. He has good coaching experience and is a really smart guy. After his NBA career, he was admitted to the Columbia University medical program. He left to pursue coaching. What about Danny Ainge? Could he be enticed to leave his great job in Boston to coach at BYU? Unlikely. Here is a list of other potential candidates I found on another site:
-Heath Schroyer, ex-Wyoming head coach, former BYU assistant coach
-Mark Madsen, former-NBDL assistant coach (Working on his master’s degree at Stanford. A lot of people around Provo would like to see Madsen hired to coach the big men
-Walter Roese, Hawaii assistant coach
-Austin Ainge, former BYU player, son of Danny Ainge, currently coaching a small basketball team in Maine (the NBDL Red Claws)
-John Wardenberg, BYU-Hawai’i assistant coach
-Quincy Lewis, Lone Peak (Utah) high school head coach (a former player under Dave Rose)
-Gib Arnold, Hawaii coach
-Jarrin Akana, Denver Nuggets assistant coach
-Jared Barrett, Washington State assistant coach
-Mark Pope, Wake Forest assistant coach
-Nick Robinson, LSU assistant coach
-Damon Archibald, former assistant at Iowa State, USC, New Mexico State
-Kerry Rupp, Ex-Louisiana Tech coach
-Jon Judkins, Dixie State College coach
-Curtis Condie, Ex-Louisiana Tech assistant coach
-Bill Evans, Former SUU coach (now an assistant at Montana)
-■■■■ Hunsaker, Utah Valley University coach
-Michael Ostlund, Snow College head coach
-Steve Dixon, Snow College assistant coach
-Tommy Connor, Westminster coach
-Norm Parrish, Salt Lake Community College coach
-Ron Carling, Southern Utah assistant coach
-Adam Hiatt, Westminister assistant coach
-Brad Barton, College of Eastern Utah coach
-Eddy Trenkle, Northeastern Colorado coach
-Swede Trenkle, Hillboro College coach
-Russell Beck, Western Nebraska CC coach
-Brady Trenkle, Dodge City CC coach
-Steve Cleveland, Ex-Fresno State coach, current FSU admin (former BYU coach)
-Tony Ingle, Ex-Kennesaw State coach (former interim BYU coach)
-Ken Wagner, BYU-Hawai’i coach (in his later years, age-wise)
-Barrett Peery, Indian Hills (Iowa) CC coach (former Utah assistant)
-Alex Jensen, St. Louis assistant coach (under Rick Majerus)
-Kelly Graves, Gonzaga women’s coach
-Adam Barrett, SDSU women’s assistant coach
-Taylor Wagner, Otero Junior College (CO) women’s head coach
-Danny Ainge, former BYU great, currently in the Boston Celtics’ front office
-Jeff Judkins, BYU women’s coach
-Roger Reid, Southern Utah Univerisity coach (former BYU coach)
-Randy Rahe?
-Stew Morrill, Utah State head coach?
-Ray Giacoletti?
I wonder if Danny Ainge would come if his son Austin get the job Unlickely
fabulous list. It is relatively dated. Several have moved on from positions listed.
Comparing any of them to Coach Rose’s record is quite a step down.
Except for the Woman’s Coach at OSU Kelly Graves who outgrew the WCC after dominating it on the woman’s side.
Out of curiosity I went back and reviewed the season record every year BYU has been in the WCC. Their record against Gonzaga is 4-10, probably the best any WCC team has done with the possible exception of St. Marys. The record against St. Marys to date is 4-7 including this season’s loss. The record against Gonzaga isn’t bad considering what Gonzaga does to everybody else. The record against St Marys isn’t what it should be. It should be about 6-5 in my opinion. What really bothers me is the losses to the other conference teams. In my opinion a loss to any of the other conference teams should be a very rare occurrence but BYU has at least one a year and sometimes two. Losing to any WCC bottom feeder should never happen at home, but it has at least 3 times that I can remember. In fact losing to St. Marys at home shouldn’t happen more than about every 5-6 years at most but has happened twice since BYU joined the WCC. What really bothers me is losing to anybody in the WCC other than Gonzaga and St. Marys… You just have to beat the teams you are supposed to beat nearly every time you play them. If not you run the risk of being locked out of the NCAA tournament. A loss to one of the bottom feeders shouldn’t happen more than about once every 3 years and never at home. Rose almost never lost to anybody outside the top echelon of the MWC teams during the MWC years. I don’t have a clue what gives against these WCC teams.
Gonzaga is a consistent top 20 team and there is no shame in being 2nd fiddle to them but BYU shouldn’t be 2nd fiddle to any of the WCC teams including St. Marys.
I believe Floyd commented in the players that have transferred away from BYU in recent years. Neilson is one that maybe we should regret losing but I don’t see him as a player who would start ahead of Mika or Childs… Carlino we lost his senior year. Chatman could have been good off the bench but doubtful he would have been a starter. We lost Toolson and Calvert and I don’t think either would have been anything more than the 2nd or 3rd man off the bench even as upperclassmen. There was also the guy who went to Clemson. I forget his name. He could have been real good. He was a top recruit. He was supposed to go on a mission and his paperwork got messed up and he transferred. There was the guy I think named Frank Bartley. I believe he would fwould have been a guy who would have been good off the bench but not a starter. I can’t think of anybody else who would have made any difference in the success of the program who has left. On the other hand BYU has benefited from a number of transfers from other programs, Rose, Bryant, Carlino (we got him form UCLA and he played 3 years and then went to Marquette), Chase Fisher, Kyle Davis,Josh Sharp (not a major contributor but he had his moments), maybe I am forgetting somebody else. I think most of the guys who have transferred into the program are better than most of the ones who left it. We also got Keena Young from Texas Tech. I think Cleveland brought him in but he played two years under Rose.
The transfers in and out happen and are no cause for alarm in my opinion. I think BYU has benefited from it more than they have been hurt.
Pre cancer, post cancer? The MWC was BYU’s conference, created by BYU and others…The WCC a Catholic conference with a Mormon school…Just a couple of thoughts.
I also do not have a concrete answer either.
Here’s a thought…
BYU just won a game by 30 and there isn’t a single post about it.
That says a lot.
home conference average 24.5 point spread. Bodes very well for future.
Rose finally seems to have his regular rotation figured out, Bodes very well for future.
Now if home warriors can turn into road warriors…salvation in store. if not just another NIT season…
Sorry Jim, I have been dealing with my mother health issues and did not get to watch much of the game, I turned it on and they were up by 31… So I turned it off…
I did notice more active defense by the BYU players than normal at least with what little I did see of the game…
Here’s a thought
Byu was tied 14–14 with less than eight minutes to go in the first half and they ended up at 51–35 at the half
Why is that a thought?
