Each player is given a grade of -2 to +2 in 0.5 increments on a given play with 0 generally being the average or “expected” grade. There are a few exceptions as each position group has different rules, but those are the basics. The zero grade is important as most plays feature many players doing their job at a reasonable, or expected, level, so not every player on every play needs to earn a positive or a negative.
At 78.6, Retzaiff is not only the highest rated player on BYU’s roster, but as a QB, he “IS” the reason why BYU is 6-0 and ranked 13
I‘ll give credit where credit is due. I admit to not believing Retzlaff could adjust his game for the better. I…… was…… wrong. (See, admitting you were wrong on this board is not hard to do. That is Not pointed at you fish).
Retzlaff has been pretty good and especially reining in the dumb plays leading to loss on downs and especially TOs. So your enthusiasm for Retzlaff is duly noted and warranted. I do not agree he IS the reason for BYUs success but playing sound, pretty mistake free quarterback is part of the reason. He even had some very catchable dropped balls that would have made his numbers look even better. His table was spread by the defense but his due credit is that he did a very good job of getting the offensive points.
My fear is when the defense has a subpar game then the offense won’t make up the difference and Retzlaff will forget his limitations
I agree he looks a lot better now then he did in the beginning of the year. to paraphrase Steve Young when he was on Fox sports last Saturday. The defense is so good it’s allowing him to grow into a better QB. I completely agree with him, Jake isn’t the best, but he gets better every week. so to answer the question that is the title of this topic. It’s time for me to eat crow and give Jake some love . He is a much better QB that I thought and he is only getting better.
but my question to all of you dose this mean that Roderick is a better OC then we thought? because if we win a few more game he will definitely be sticking around for a few more years.
It’s easier to coach with better players. I found that when I was coaching high school basketball. You can do so much more with better players. We were wanting so much more out of Arod with a depleted line and other injuries in past years than he could ever do.
If there is crow left to pass around, I will eat my share…AROD is doing much better than I gave him credit for. We will see as BYU faces some high scoring offenses starting with OSU.
Is he better, because the defense has given him short field advantage in all six games? or is he doing better with his calls as an OC?
That is a tricky question to answer.
The way I judge if he is better, is when they have produced on their own. How is the play calling when they go 70-80 yards?
Let me ask you this, how many times have we had to go for it on 4th down? is that “good” play calling for the first three down or is because they don’t trust the punter?
I think the short field advantage that the offense has helped ARod look better, but I am not in his camp as being “better”.
here is the current stats for BYU offense vs BYU Defense
Offense:
Yds/Game 381.3 (70th FBS, 13th BIG 12)
Rush Yds/Game 140.5 (85th FBS, 12th BIG 12)
Pass Yds/Game 240.8 (47th FBS, 8th BIG 12)
Pts/Game 34.3 (30th FBS, 3rd BIG 12
Defense
Yds/Game 291.2 (23rd FBS, 4th BIG 12)
Rush Yds/Game 120.3 (44th FBS, 5th BIG 12)
Pass Yds/Game 170.8 (31st FBS, 6th BIG 12)
Pts/Game 16.3 (15th FBS, 2nd BIG 12)
So, I ask you this question: Is ARod really better, or is the defense the ones that are winning the games?
Hard to tell based on your statistics because of the defense being better than expected. But not so much in the areas you listed. You forgot one big reason, turnover plus margin and special teams. So, your opinion has no opinion based on the criteria you used.
As I posted, I would put defense and special teams as the primary reason for winning because of scoring and short fields. I would give Arod a B+ - A- for taking advantage of this. And Retzlaff the same grade. I would also give the defense the same rating which means both can improve. Special teams get an A - A+ rating so far.
6-0 baby. BYU up until the Arizona game was 100% in the red zone. O is doing something right.
I’m not going to dump on AROD while we were dealing with a bevy of injured running backs. How did we do in the Arizona game? that was a pretty good defense, and we finally had Martin and Ropati back.
Baylor game, 3rd down conversion 3-13
Arizona, 3rd down 4-11
So I think we will see more extended drives as well as game control as our RBs stay healthy.
I said early on I was not a buyer of BYU’s record until we had a capable running game.
Utah hangs it’s hat on ball control and running the ball, they got 84 total running yds in the Zona game…BYU got 141. To me, spells trouble for future teams, they will have to respect our run game.
People keep bringing up 3rd efficiency and how poor it is. What they don’t include is 11-14, 79% 4th down efficiency this year. Have to keep that in mind too.
I was at the Arizona game. Didn’t plan on going but went last minute. Had perfect seats right near the 50. Perfect view of almost every play.
I doubted Jake. I doubted his foot speed, but MOSTLY his poise. He had proven me wrong so far. There were at least 3 plays Saturday where he felt pressure and threw the ball OOB, when last year he tried to run (fumble) or throws into coverage (pick)—which is why he led ALL QBs in TOs between the first game he started last year and second game this year. But the poise to feel pressure and throw it away has been the key.
My beef with ARod remains 1) in 8 years has never recruited a single solitary HS QB who has ever played a meaningful role for BYU, and 2) thinks he’s too cute. When we drive the entire field with conventional plays, we DO NOT NEED an inside TE fly sweep for negative yardage on first down. He called that Saturday and I was just shaking my head, and 3) going for it on 4th instead of taking 3 easy points in the first quarter of what is expected to be a close game is INSANE. Is ARod doing better? Yes. Has he fixed 1 and 2? No.
was also at the game. about 30 rows up in the Arizona section. Most importantly, ALSO got the free ice cream from the BYU creamery! Mine was cookies and cream.
Agree - a great drive to open the game and come away with zero points. Disappointing.
Great game though. The game plan for Fafita and McMillian (?) was near perfect. Arizona is a good team and we smoked them! Glasker pick 6 was fun way to end it.
My favorite player is Glasker. Stud, stud, stud. When I saw him basically out run Kingston during… hold on a sec…Back. I just had to watched the punt return again - actually 4 times in a row. It is one of my favorite plays of all time in any sport that I seen in person. Right up there seeing Jordan hit 6 - 3 pointers in a row, in the first half, in the old Chicago Stadium and seeing Butler having two chances to beat Duke in Indianapolis. Both those were so loud. The punt return was same level. The crowd was so loud! Frenzied might be a good word too. I love especially watching the BYU bench going crazy as Kingston following Glasker fly by. I’ll probably watch it 50 more times.
Bring on OSU. I do have some worries - mostly that there will be a game or two or three where the defense doesn’t get all the bounces/makes some major mistakes and it will be on the offense to win the game. Retzlaff could shine. ARod could shine. We’ll see.
I pointed out that BYU finally got on track when they “quit” doubling and tripling McMillian and single covered, freeing DBs to cover the run as well as receivers that killed us on that 1st drive. Kelly was all over the field, including covering TEs coming out of the back field.
McMillian getting his yds had little to do with Arizona winning in past games, someone must of pointed that out to Hill after that 1st Aona TD. Game over.
As in, OSU had a bye week to prep for BYU. BYU has a short week. I’m so nervous before each of these games…Go Cougs
