Well this is a good way to start the season

safety Faletau Satuala injured his right foot

‘Strengths everywhere’: Despite starting safety’s injury, Kelly Poppinga still high on BYU defense – Deseret News

In the article is says:
Satuala has been seen around campus with a [hard cast on his right foot and on crutches;

a BYU football spokesperson has said that because it is not a “long-term type of injury” the program will not be commenting on it.

From personal experience, foot injuries are not the easiest to come back from, although these guys have a lot more access to doctors, PT and equipment than I ever had.

Hope it is nothing that will cause him problems down the road.

On another front, I know recruiting is a longer process than most schools, but I have noticed in the Deseret News lately that Utah is getting more and more of the 3-4 star recruits for the 2027 season. They have had like 5-6 announcements compared to BYU 1 or 2.

Is this something to worry about, that maybe the “magic” of BYU recruiting is slowing down?

I am a bit puzzled at Utah’s success this recruiting cycle after losing Whittingham and over half their staff. Maybe Scalley is a super recruiter.

According to Jay Drew of the Dnews BYU currently ranks last in the Big 12 in recruiting and 80th nationally. It is still early so it is hard to tell at this point if we need to worry. The 2026 recruiting class was one of BYU’s best ever. We will see where things stand at the end of the 2027 cycle.

If BYU can have another great year this year I would imagine recruiting will pick up.

I read this article in DesNews and found it interesting about the effect of the new 5 for 5 NCAA rule.

This is part of what Jay Drew had to say:
Because of coming on board soon, redshirts will be gone, and greyshirts — having players enroll in school but not be a part of the team — will probably be gone as well.

That will affect BYU because the school asks a lot of returned missionaries to greyshirt while they get rid of mission rust and get their legs back. Those RMs will now take up scholarships immediately, so BYU simply does not have 25 or so scholarships available to high school players, as most schools do.

Will BYU ever be able to duplicate last year’s recruiting success? – Deseret News

I think the ever-changing landscape of the NCAA is making it harder for BYU, especially when it comes to managing the missions of players.

You are really in the dark about a lot of things…

Good post Floyd. The 5 in 5 rule will change a lot but will be fine for BYU in the long run. Sitting on the be bench for a year isn’t much different than a redshirt year, and the last 20 or 30 guys on the depth chart don’t play anyway.

Our total commit numbers are low because our returning RM numbers are now added in from the jump. And we have guys like Ryner Swanson and Ryder Lyons coming back who, if counted in the class, would put us right up there with almost any other school. I picked out those two, but we have a bunch of impact players joining the program next year after missions. The future is bright.

Well until the next change the NCAA decides to do…

Still not sure how that all works out, who is counted and who is not for a particular season. But it bugs me that Utah has gotten some very good state recruits over BYU.

Although, we did get a bit prize in Wolfgramm
Analysis: Getting Uhila Wolfgramm was a must-win for BYU coaches – Deseret News

Although I have to scratch my head about the decision of Moa Brown choosing Fresno State over BYU, Arizona and other big time schools.

Here is another one announced today:
3-star offensive tackle Kyle Nabrotzky commits to BYU – Deseret News

Too bad Fish is traveling the world (literally), with his buddies; I would like to know if he knows anymore about Lakepa “Gepa” Satuala (Faletau’s brother) through his connections.

BYU coaching staff is recruiting hard with him.

Wow, what a response… did you have to think long and hard to come with that?
