What Happened Tonight?

Yes, Alabama shot and made half of their 50
3 point shots. But we only hit 6 of 30, 20%. Had we made 6 or 7 more the game would have been a nail brighter at the end. That’s pretty much the difference. Was it our defensive scheme?

BYU didn’t play a bad game. They were very good in the paint and took it to the rim and inside a lot. Alabama was a buzzsaw. They won’t come close to replicating that the rest of the way.

Alabama just played a great game. They were the better team tonight.

They were only the better 3 point shooting team. Our play was as good as their’s. They were hitting 35 foot threes and some with good defense on them. 6-30 threes for BYU was the difference. Many weren’t even close to going in.

Yeah BYU missed a lot of threes but the thing you are missing is that BYU made a lot of close, easy shots. It is nearly impossible to beat a team that scores 75 points from three’s and 76 percent of Alabama’s shots were from outside the arc. It was crazy. Less than 40 percent of BYU’s shots were from outside the arc. As far as the rest of the stats go it was pretty even. Even if BYU had made half their 3’s like Alabama did they still lose by double digits.

BYU actually didn’t play that bad of a game.

BYU was 6-30. We took plenty of 3’s. Let’s see, 15 out of 30 would be 9 more 3 point shots. 9 x 3 =27
We lost by 25. We would have won.

Doesn’t really work exactly like that. There were plenty of made shots after missed threes and other factors that play into the final equation. I was giving BYU the benefit of the doubt… made threes also include less two’s. Too many unknowns to simplify it like you did.

But that is how you usually look at things, with a simplistic mindset and missing lots of details.

Make the 3’s and it’s a different ball game. Especially at the end. Like many games this year. Just the facts…

Doesn’t matter if, ands or buts. Sometimes you just have to admit the team that won, was the better team that night. Congrats Alabama-a historic night. Congrats BYU and coach Young-a great season and a good tournament. I expect Demin, Catchings, Saunders, Keba to be back for an even better year next year. It’s great to be a BYU fan

There’s no doubt Alabama shot a crazy percentage above what they had been shooting. My point is that we did just the opposite with 3’s. Making 6-8 more three’s would have changed the pressure on Alabama and possibly make them press a bit and miss more three’s. 20% was pathetic for us. The rest of our play was good.

Yeh I understand your point and don’t have a problem with it. Overall, my opinion is that Alabama was, as a group more athletic, and a better shooting team than BYU. But on a given night BYU is capable of beating just about anyone. We as fans tend to grieve when our team loses and go back to “if we had done this”. I would rather give the opposition credit and move on and leave it behind and correct my own deficiencies. In BYU’s case the area I see as the area that needs more work is “team defense”. Keita was a good defender, but Foos was exploited because he was really undersized. Next year I expect BYU to be great again offensively, but substantially better at team defense.

Especially if they all come back that can. Demin, Catchings, Saunders, Keba, Hall. Add AJ and Staton and we should have some shot blockers and more.

Demin and Saunders will be key in returning. Catchings played “young” imo, not sure why. No reason for Saunders to return except for love of playing at BYU. Demin loves BYU, and imo another year fine tunes him for the NBA. Keba needs work on his offensive game so he should come back. BYU could use a 6’4” good shooting guard out of the portal. Dawson Baket should return. It will be interesting to see who goes NBA and the portal
