What about the chances of a 2 bid Big 12???
We need to be 12-0 before the championship game for the Big12. So if we lose, we would most likely be in the coveted 12. There still would be a likelihood if 11-1 while everyone else had two losses.
Seven Things BYU Fans Should Watch For When the First CFP Rankings Come Out
BYU has the best wins between BYU, Indiana, and Miami. The Cougars have a road win over otherwise unbeaten SMU (more on the Mustangs in a moment), and a win over Kansas State who will likely be ranked.
Miami’s best win is over three-loss Louisville, while Indiana has not beaten a team that is receiving votes in the AP poll.
If the committee values quality wins, there is a case for BYU to be ranked ahead of Miami and Louisville. If the committee refers to advanced metrics like FPI and SP+, they will likely rank the Hoosiers and the Hurricanes in front of the Cougars.
Cougars have to keep winning. I expect the Utah game to be a dogfight. They may have lost their last 4 but they have a lot of talent, particularly on defense.
They will probably want an ugly low scoring game and then hope to steal a close one.
If we can stay aggressive and not get caught up in the high emotions, they will make mistakes that we can capitalize on. They are down but still are a Big12 team with talent. We have to not try to be hero ball and lose concentration. Stay in our lanes on defense.
BYU comes in a #9. But #4 in the bye bracket as the leader of the Big 12.
BYU Comes In at No. 9 in the First College Football Playoff Rankings

“ College football playoff committee shows big crush on big 10 while snubbing BYU ,. Big 12
The article says BYU would have to win the conference playoff game to qualify for the College football playoff. Meaning sound like only one big 12 team gets to go to the college playoff. I hope they are wrong
National Analysts Came to BYU’s Defense After CFP Rankings Were Unveiled
College Football Playoff Anger Index - B1G love, BYU disrespect and more outrage - ESPN
BYU will slide into the 3 spot very nicely, and it’s about time we replaced Miami.
Although, I think BYU has used up 2 of it’s nine lives
These are crazy times!!!
Bowl projections: Alabama moves to 3-seed in College Football Playoff field, Ohio State replaces Georgia - CBSSports.com
If BYU stays undefeated:
Ohio State moves up to the top seed in the wake of Georgia’s loss. BYU is projected to finish undefeated and get the No. 2 seed. I believe the two-loss difference between BYU and Alabama should be enough for the Cougars to finish ahead Alabama, which is how the committee placed them this week.
I had previously been projecting Iowa State to be the Big 12 champ, but the Cyclones lost their second game in a row on Saturday and will need help to get to the title game now. Colorado is in the driver’s seat to join BYU after a win at Texas Tech on Saturday.
The fourth No. 1 seed is still Miami despite the loss Saturday to Georgia Tech. Miami may have to go into the ACC title game as the lower seed against SMU, but I still like the Hurricanes to emerge victorious from that matchup.
In this projection, Miami also has to win a tiebreaker to get to the ACC title game. The Canes get the nod over Clemson because of a better record against common opponents. (how big is that SMU win now?)
Five Takeaways from BYU’s Ranking in the CFP Top 25
The committee showed BYU’s resume some respect by putting them ahead of Tennessee. The Volunteers beat Mississippi State over the weekend, but after re-evaluating the resumes and giving BYU some benefit for beating Utah in a hostile environment, the committee put undefeated BYU ahead of one-loss Tennessee.
Last week, the committee did BYU no favors. BYU was ranked behind big brands Texas, Tennessee, and Penn State who have fewer wins over Top 25 teams than BYU combined: one. That changed this week and BYU’s resume is starting to gain some respect.
Me: nothing matters until the Big 12 championship game is done and we have the final rankings for all teams.
This is important. BSU has only lost to #1 Oregon, BYU, if it loses one could either be passed and BSU gets that coveted #4 seat in the playoff or the committee keeps the Big 12 winner in the 4 spot…The Race in the ACC could get dicey as SMU is in the lead now (undefeated in ACC play). If they win and BYU has only one loss, I would think BYU retains the #3 spot.
Don’t hold your breathe. This is the SEC-Big 10 show, never forget
Dadadaaaa…This should not be a heading…refer to #2
also a waste of ink…Penn St has to play the big 10 champ. game.
Me: BYU is sitting pretty at #6 in rankings…they got it wrong the 1st week and many pointed out that BYU’s SOS was far better than Miami, Indiana, ND etc…Miami lost. Georgia lost and Indiana has to play OSU as well as the B10 game.
to see how BYU would be treated if we lost, refer to Miami, who lost to a 4 loss GT and only lost 3 seeds. BYU has got to stay ahead of a one lost BSU, we are now 6 spots ahead.
The SEC has a particular quandary. Al, Ga, Old Miss are all in the 10-12 seeds with 2 losses. Tenn, Tex A&M and Tex all have 1 loss.
Tenn, who is ahead of BYU has to play @ Georgia. Ga can’t get ahead of Bama.
Plan on Ga mauling Tenn. and while Ga has 2 losses (as does Al and OMiss) they will all have a say in the playoffs. Ga would jump 4 spots to # 8 but be an at large team that no one wants to play.
Tex is the SEC frontrunner but have to play @ Tx A&M. A loss would really jam up the SEC.
Tex vs. A&M, on a A&M win, Bama plays Tex A&M in the sec championship. (if Ga beats Tenn). Texas would fall all the way behind Ga. I say Texas plays Bama in the SEC game,
Big 10
Oregon, Indiana are 7-0, OSU and Penn have one loss. all are in the top 5 CFP, ahead of BYU.
Indiana plays @OSU. On a OSU win, OSU plays Oregon in the Big 10 Champ game.
ACC
has undefeated SMU. One loss Clemson and Miami. let’s say they all win out. I will throw ND in there as they play a ACC schedule.
ND should win out and be a 7 seed
SMU plays either Miami or Clemson in the ACC champ game…if SMU wins out, they help BYU in a big big way.
My question. How will the CFP reconcile with 6 sec teams and 4 big 10 teams.

Elon Musk on BYU
They will make sure SEC has least 4 teams in to match Big10 and even if B10 only gets three in.
SEC grousing hard that big 10 has 4 out of top 5. B10 is way more top heavy than SEC which = B10 has 2 undefeated and 2 one loss teams vs 2 one loss AnD A bunch of 2 loss for SEC. they should get at least 4 in, 5 if ND gets 2 losses.
I give it 5 % chance ACC and B12 get a combined 3 teams in
Wouldn’t it be great to have a Big12 team, hopefully BYU, to win the National Championship!
I think the Big 10 and the SEC will each get four teams in. Notre Dame, group of five champ, ACC champ, and Big 12 champ to finish it up. If Notre Dame loses, the question is do we get a fifth SEC team or another big 12 or ACC team. I’m guessing SEC.
It’s not a meritocracy. It’s what makes ESPN the most money. See last year and Florida state.
here’s a pretty good read…continue all the way down to Team A, B and C. Covers the Big 12 and all the scenarios.
