l was thinking about this. Assuming that Retzlaff isn’t going to get better. When should the coaches play Bohanon? Because once you put him in the likely hood of you going back to Retzlaff is almost non existent. I think they have to do it either with Wyoming or Baylor.
why do I say this?
You don’t want to wait to long when the team is completely demoralized.
After Baylor we have some hard games coming up. At this point we will have hopefully only lost one game after Baylor we have UA and OSU, but if you don’t bring him in then we could be 3 and 4 on the season with a broken team.
I wouldn’t start him with a ranked team.
you don’t want to put him behind the 8ball and have him come out with a loss, you want him start off with a win. This is important, because the team may at this point be questioning its self and that can be really hard to over come when you have a slate of good teams you are going to play
BIG16 (or what ever they are going to call themselves) will be starting.
if you don’t start him with Wyoming then we will only be one game into the regular season.
I really think Roderick made a honorable call going with Retzlaff. I don’t think the team is behind him, if they were they would have made him one of the captains, but they didn’t they made Bohanon one. That says a lot about what they think of him (Bohanon). I would stop messing around with the inevitable and just pull the trigger now. you know Retzlaff’s weaknesses, he has one more year, so don’t work with him as the year progresses and as our schedule gets harder. bench him now and train him to be ready next year.
Everyone talks about Retzlaff having 6 games under his belt, but people don’t talk the fact that he has had a year and half in the system. In my opinion, he should not be making the same mistakes he made last year, especially against teams that has lesser talent than those in the BIG12. Although, SMU did have 5 former Miami players on the defense.
People like Matich says that he gets in panic mode when rushed, which is the reason for making some of his boneheaded throws or fumbling trying to make a big play.
I am not sure he can overcome his jitters; I am pretty sure that TCU, Utah, Kansas, OKC have a lot tougher defenses than SMU. What is going to do against them.
Add to the fact that we really do not have a good QB coach (sorry, ARod was a receiver, not a QB, can you name one good player he ever coached up?)
No Zach and Jaren were not products of ARod, Every QB recruit before this year has transferred (I think they call that a sign).
I would not go with Bohanan for the simple reason he is “One and Done”, I would go with Hillstead instead because he has a couple of year left.
Excellent response. Floyd is simply thinking about the future years. Rebuilding I think is the term used. Well, we have done rebuilding for this year. Only 3 sacks of Retzlaff in 2 games is a great improvement. The types of run plays called are often sniffed out by defenses. The runs in the gaps are often missed by the RBs. See what the backups can do.
Here is a little statistical food for thought on our QB situation:
Career QB Rating per ESPN:
Bohanon 133.8
Hillstead 128.8
Retzlaff 115.7
Granted the ESPN QB rating system is bonkers, but it can be a general tool to see who is getting the job done without screwing up too much. Only 1 of the 16 B12 teams has a QB with a career rating under 130 (TTU), and only a couple more are under 135. For example, at UCF in 2021 GB was 146 but also added 9 rushing TDs. 150+ is great. 140ish is decent. Sub 130 is bad UNLESS the QB also provides SIGNIFICANT rushing value (in 2016, Taysom was 116 but also ran for 600 yards and 8 TDs; that team also had a pretty modest group of WR).
For comparison (these guys are all potential 1st round draft picks):
Jackson Dart 154.2
Dillon Gabriel 160.5
Quinn Ewers 148.9
and as a bonus for those who think Hillstead is “too small”:
Noah Fifita (listed at 5’10"/188) (UofA) 165.0
115 is REALLY bad. The stats are the stats and they don’t look good for BYU. Last year Slovis was 122 and JR was 97 (not sure I’ve ever seen one that low).
Finally, you cannot discount terrible play calling as a factor in QB rating. Does this look familiar:
Run zone dive on first.
Run counter on second.
On 3rd down, throw behind the chains.
Punt.
