Won their league and picked to win it again. The way they shoot 3s they can challenge good teams like BYU. And they did tonight.
We were up to the challenge and Fischer and KC stepped up their game. As well all everyone else. Seljass was matching their sharp shooters. Triple double by KC. Davis played well. Emery didn’t shoot great but played tough defense and rebounded well.
Kaufusi was taken out of the game because he didn’t match up well with this team. However, instead of Austin coming in for Davis, I’d rather see Kaufusi.
Team only had 6 turnovers. Shot 54.7% and great 3 point shooting. Free throw shooting can still be better.
I still don’t understand your love for Fischer… How did he “step up his game”? He is a volume scorer… needed a ton of shots to get his points. Unfortunately Rose is going to stick with him no matter what. The fact that he plays bad defense, rarely passes and forces his shot so he can fill up the scorebook is something that doesn’t seem to matter.
I will guarantee that he will be a major factor in several more losses this season, probably against a weak Gonzaga, Pepperdine and maybe another wcc team. The reason CMU was so good from 3 point area is because BYU plays poor perimeter defense. Also, BYU gave up way too many offensive rebounds (something else CF doesn’t do well is box out) in this game, even with a distinct height advantage. Corbin is regressing because he isn’t being utilized properly. How many shots at the basket did Davis get? Kaufusi can do the same thing but they don’t get him the ball.
BYU will go the rest of the way with Collinsworth trying to rack up more triple doubles (that was really poor watching him work to get that last assist) Fischer taking more shots than anybody else regardless of being on or not and BYU getting very little inside except for Davis in easy games.
The game was close until Seljaas got hot and KC/CF got jealous… once the freshman opened up the game it made it easy on the rest. CF and KC are in it for themselves and their stats… and if Seljaas lets it go to his head then he will end up just like CF and KC… thinking he has to carry the team and pad his stats… please stay humble and think team first Zac.
I think you have Fisher pegged just about right. He played better than he did against Colorado, and that is the only thing that can be said about him “stepping it up”. I can understand Rose starting him because anything less would likely be the complete end of Fisher, but as we saw last night, others are getting well deserved additional time and deserve every minute of it.
Someone stated that Seljaas won the game and certainly, his play helped a ton. But Emery along with a few others also played well. Rebounding was off, but the D we were forced to play because of the outside shooting left a lot of room in the paint for rebounds. Still, we could have done much better. The problem again was that penetration killed our D as we seem to have a real big issue with staying in front of anyone. Some of that is slow foot movement but I have to believe some of it is also bad mechanics as far as getting a bit lower to move better from side to side and and keeping weight balanced in order to be able to stay in front of dribbler better either direction. Our guys always appear a step late and behind when penetration starts and that leads to just a mess of shifts on defense that leads to open shots.
I give Kafusi somewhat of a pass on this game as the style of play just wasn’t for him. Too many smaller guys running around and bombing away from downtown, which isn’t the best for his skill set and the long rebounds from those bombs make him less valuable inside. Even so, he can do better and be more active inside. His positioning still needs work on both ends of the court. I think he can learn from Austin on D, who plays a lot more aggressive (particular on rebounding) when he gets a bit pissed when smaller guys jump all over him to get the ball.
This team right now is playing worse than Gonzaga, Pepperdine, and St. Mary’s–though Pepperdine might be close the other two teams will probably beat the Cougars twice.
This team just let a 5-5 CMU team score more than they have against all but one other team they’ve played this year. The defensive improvement that looked like was coming into being at the beginning of the year turned out to be a chimera because the opponents were simply so badly matched.
With the plethora of talented big men showing up in the next few years Coach Rose needs to get someone on staff who can develop the bigs…“Forced to go to a five guard lineup against CMU” makes me want to puke.
It is nice that when called on against a team as bad as CMU BYU can outscore the opponents. But this game was won because BYU was at home. On the road the tie score at half would have been a deficit and like Utah, Colorado, and LBSU outscoring the other guy probably wouldn’t have worked. CMU is 5-5 against an even weaker schedule than BYU. And BYU’s schedule is going to get harder when conference begins… 7-3 with the three losses against the 3 best teams they’ve played is not a good omen for anything but the NIT…
CMU is hardly a bad team. They are supposed to win the MAC this year…again. The only reason they are 5/5 is their allstar guard, Fowler was out with a high sprain.
Rose had to go to a small lineup as CMU were hitting their shots from further out.
I love Zaljass game. Rebounder and stone cold shooter.
Zeljaas was on fire once again but he still had fewer shots and fewer minutes than Fischer.
I don’t mean to be singling out CF, but he just isn’t the type of team player that will help BYU win the games against good teams that they need to win. I wish Rose would have given some of CF’s minutes to Chatman or Bryant earlier so they could have some experience. Not sure why Rose seems to want to rely on CF so much when he has proven to be unreliable so often.
Ugh-show me a good game on the road. Style may not have been made for Kaufusi, but he’s a better option than Austin. Bad perimeter defense-byu’s threes much better contested-good thing Seljass is 6’7". Is Ayres still injured? At least he fills up the middle. I don’t care what Central Michigan did last year-they are one game away from a losing record-bring on Harvard. Chatman got 20 Seconds of pt-Rose up to old tricks?
Bryant has to sit this year. Transfer rules. I am with you, Jim. Fischer is a one dimensional shooter who does nothing on defense, few rebounds and when you can bring in Zaljass, who does rebound and can defend both guards and forwards, it is a no brainer. I can’t say anything about Chatman but I would like to see more of Hartsock. He can score and at 6’8, we could use him.
I wrote a post that Central Michigan is not a good team. I figured that losses to Weber State, Milwaukee, and Grand Canyon were not the type that good teams suffer.
Put me in the “Why is Fisher instead of Chatman starting” camp. He is atrocious on defense, is not known for dishing assists, disappears at critical moments, and cannot be depended upon to be a go to guy.
Chatman plays better D but it’s difficult to get into the rhythm of the game if you only play one or two minutes.
I would be happy with Fischer coming in as a spark plug when the team is not playing particularly well… like a sixth man type thing. He could provide some scoring punch that teams need on occasion. You have to admit that the guy, when he is on, has a nice stroke. But far too often he makes bad decisions when it comes to “shoot of don’t shoot” situations and it can hurt the team more than it helps them.
It must be hard for Rose trying to decide what is the right thing to do and when to do it.
The only thing is who is any more consistant? Chatman doesn’t shoot much when he’s been in. Points have to come from somewhere. I just hope Rose doesn’t mess up Kaufusi
