I’m agreeing with Twawk.
I like your analysis Fish! I enjoy your knowledgeable comments. We will probably not see eye to eye on the BYU offense with the play calling and the irrational QB play of Jake. I just look at the B12 and don’t see a strong league over all in FB. I might change my mind if ASU wins. I don’t think they will. BYU has a good defense and good special teams but against top teams the offense is a killer. We have super high turnover numbers …. Unacceptably high by our offense and specifically Jake. They are mitigated by a high turnover margin from our defense and scoring from our special teams. With an 11-2 record against a marginal conference I know ARod and Jake will stay around. I don’t think either of them will get any better and I hope BYU can make the CFP next season but if we do - an elite defense will kill us. Jake will be a turnover machine and ARod’s play calling will be exposed. My biggest concern with Jake …. Bigger than the TO’s is his awful accuracy issue. He will never never ever go pro. They will not tolerate his type of inaccuracy at all. His average QB rating as a starter is about 110. That is way below a decent level.
On many levels I am embarrassed by our offense but we’ve got some good running backs and we didn’t run that awful jet sweep as much this year. Although ARod still tried it …. But the running attack is much better than last year mainly because we got a legit OL coach - finally!
You really only got that from his many comments? Cherry picking. No, he said he wants to recruit more 4 and 5 stars and said he will. Of course, ESPN will drop 4 stars to 3 stars.
so you bring up a good point…Why then, when Hill is soooo good as a DC did we play such vanilla defense on Utah? They were even more one dimensional than Colo. That game should of been the 1st in 20 years where we just walk all over them, instead we let them hang around. Retzlaff coughed up the ball twice
Kind words my friend.
We are all kind of trying to digest the season, We all see the stupid turnovers and just plain dumb interceptions (especially in the redzone) and it drives us nuts.
Amen. but as you point out, 11-2 in a power league will never get anyone fired and we were 8 points from being undefeated. That will get people promoted, not fired. We gotta put the fan hat down and enjoy this crazy predicament. Somehow, we have to find a way to replace Robinson on D, that dude is a NFL lock Jakob Robinson #0 | Defensive Back - Wide Receiver | BYU Football
Kalani emphasizes fit over flash, meaning he’s looking for players who align with BYU’s program values both on and off the field. He also mentioned that they are excited about the recruits’ families and backgrounds, as they believe these young men will be great ambassadors for the program.
BYU signs 18 recruits as football’s early signing period begins – Deseret News
Please show me where actually said he wanted to recruit 4- and 5-star players.
I provided “Evidence” of what I said, Now how about you do the same…
There’s a basketball game on. A league game.
BYU would have beat the former byu qb’s team!!
Bi12 proved got huge disrespect.
Agreed. Although, Arizona was one play from winning and stole defeat out of the jaws of victory by blitzing on 4th down in the first overtime.
When I saw ASU blitz on 4th down and get no pressure on the QB and Ewers could sit back in the pocket and find a receiver it looked bad for ASU unless Ewers made a bad throw. If you are going to do that you at least better make the QB rush the throw. They never got a finger on Ewers and he was completely comfortable making the throw. A good QB will kill you every time when thy throw with no pressure on them and the receivers have man to man coverage.
The Texas kicker could have ended the game in regulation and missed a 38 yard FG. He also missed a 48 yarder with about a 1:40 left. ASU couldn’t get in FG range with plenty of time to do so.
This game was a lot closer than I thought it would be. Frankly, ASU was totally robbed on the no targeting call. That was awful officiating and will probably cost the review official a demotion. ASU would have won the game right there and they deserved it.
Completely agree. How could they not call targeting.
Conspiracy
It’s always on your mind…
JR First half of season: 14td/5int
2nd half: 6td/7int
Last 5 games: 2td/5int
That, folks, is trash when the chips were down.
Nice kid, tries his best, but 1) very inaccurate and 2) literally loses his mind under pressure and forgets to respect the football.
Stats don’t lie.
They don’t lie but they also don’t tell the whole story. The problem with those turnovers is that they came in key parts of the game. If you’re up 3 TD’s late in a game and throw a pick it’s not that big a deal. If you’re down a field goal and throw a pick in the end zone, that is a big deal.
Well JR threw a bunch of he picks in clutch situations and more than half in scoring distance. I’m sick of Arod saying how great he is. He is a very average QB who has big issues with accuracy (58% completions) and dumb decision making (12 picks, most in scoring range), without enough big numbers in yards or scores to make up for it. He is Mr Average. He’s not bad. It’s just that if we listen to ARod he is one of the BYU great ones.
This was a light bulb moment comment for me. I was reading the entire post and thinking to myself, yep that is right, yep Tom is on point, yep he is accurate with his comments and then you said that last line and I thought, there is a key to the big picture issue.
I can look back on last season and this one and it seems to me that the offense wastes way too much time trying to come up with that highlight play, that sports center top ten play, that “BYU’s greatest moments” play that makes Arod and JR part of the great ones that we have witnessed over the past 50 years… the miracle bowl, the Nielsen, Young, Bosco, McMahon, Detmer comebacks that we will always remember. The difference is that those were never forced or scripted, they just happened. I feel like this offense is trying to script those memorable BYU moments by utiliziing way too many trick plays, way too many bad timing pass plays, way too many “unexpected” gadget plays that tend to create situations where the defense has had to bail the offense out or a special teams play has had to make up the scoring deficit created by an offense that is too busy trying to create highlight reel plays instead of just winning games and letting the highlight plays happen within the flow of the game.
I hope that makes sense to the rest of you. I am clear on what I am trying to explain, I’m just not sure I got my point across.
Just play to win the game and do what is working. Follow a game plan, manage the clock and stop trying to do highlight reel, unexpected, fantastic comeback type things. Those will happen on their own, you don’t need to script it.
This is true. Stats don’t lie because it takes humans to manipulate them into a lie. Jake was hurt for several games. BYU has always played hurt but not out QBs even during the Bronco era. 20 TD to 12 interceptions in 13 games. Look back at our past great QBs during their sophomore and junior years. Check those stats out. Ask Floyd to do it as he’s retired with nothing to do.
I am lightly pumping the brakes here. Yes, JR is guilty of all the above but any coach will tell you that as a season goes on, it gets tougher to fool the opposition. They know every move players make, they know the OC’s game plan, That is why Oregon was undefeated and crowned NC by viewers then looks pathetic in the OSU game.
And that is also why a Coach that can make play to play changes on the fly vs. what the defense is doing is extremely valuable. Arod in NOT a great in game coach. 11-2 says he’s good but not great. The same can be said about RJ. Good but not great. Pope was not a good road game coach, that is following him at Kentucky.
Hopping that with the team’s cohesiveness (we don’t have that many holes to fill) and the talent returning, that we eliminate TOs. 2025 gonna be amazing
