Why BYU DOMINATED Colo in the Alamo

1 BYU came to play! Colo came be announced, show their many trophies and dance to a Alamo win…BYU did not get the memo.

2 ESPN announcers under fire for one-sided coverage For all the years BYU kept ESPN afloat, ESPN has fired all the talent that traveled this journey with BYU, They have zero clues about OUR journey or how we got here

3 BYU D: the real reason why Colo looked lost out there. Never seen such a lob sided win in a bowl game!. 104 total yds for the entire game. Take away Hunter’s two big plays and Colo was negative yards for the entire game. Jay Hill for President

4 The Entire D backfield locked down Colo’s high flying passing game to rubble. Kind of had a feeling this would happen but was too chicken to say it outright, But BYU led the league in passing defense+ Colo’s lack of a rushing attack= Complete domination.

5 BYU left 3 TDs on the table in the 1st half…if somehow we could get Retzlaff to understand the value of possessions, BYU would easily be undefeated and playing for a Big piece of the NTitle. How good will BYU be in 2025? Duuuuuuude

6 Martin wins O MVP. 2 TDs and 93 rushing 33 receiving.

7 Glasker wins the D MVP, 8 tackles, one for a big loss and a interception complete with the Prime Dance.

8 Roberts out with right arm injuries, enter Lassiter in the 2nd, never miss a beat! Did not need big passing numbers because Colo could NOT stop BYU running game or LJ Martin and his 2 TDs!

9 It was awesome to see Bohanan being used so much in his last game…Maybe he’s back or did they burn his “4” game min???IDK but it should be mentioned that the endzone pass was a sitting duck and BYU has had the right QB running the show all season.

10 Parker Kingston gets one more highlight reel and did he solute on his way into the endzone?

11 Repeat after me…Will Ferrin for president!

12 AROD thinks he’s sooooo cute…cut out all the trick crap and just score in the red zone. Talk about making simplicity into head scratching stupidity. Ask LJ Martin…he knows!

13 2025 BYU Football Schedule | FBSchedules.com With all of BYU’s talent back…looks like 8-0 to start 2025 and a BYU ranking top 20 to start next year…consider that BYU started as the Big 12 basement dweller and ESPN having us somewhere in the 80 slot with that 9-0 start and a 6 ranking, we lost one and fell to 14, the ASU loss, dropped out of the CFP completely…fast forward to 2025 and start with a top 20 ranking, you do the math!

DEBATABLE…

I pretty much agree with everything you posted except that one. We will never know, Bohanon never really got an opportunity and I don’t fault him for the pick because it was a stupid play call in the first place. Just on decision making alone I don’t know how Bohanon could be any worse than Retzlaff. All we needed was an average offensive team and BYU would be underfeated with some dominating wins instead of 2 losses with most of the wins being nail biters.

I wanted, so badly, to watch a game where the offense controlled tempo, drove the length of the field and scored in dominating fashion… but never really saw it. Even in this game there were so many opportunities to show that domination but it was the defense and special teams that once again did the dominating. Yes, LJ had a nice game but Retzlaff looked average again and made several poor decisions leading to turnovers. Like you said, if he could just understand how to value a possession…

Anyhow, overall a very good season and I won’t complain anymore. I also thought Arod called a decent game with only a couple of head scratchers so he is off the hook again.

You won’t complain anymore

Look, Bohanan got the opportunity and didn’t show it when the competition happened. I would have liked to see him play more too. But Jake won the starting job, period.

whatever… his play all season long was barely good enough to keep it apparently.

He better be MUCH improved next season because he wasn’t that impressive, overall, this season. He had his moments but the consistency and decision making left a lot to be desired.

Apparently he and his teammates were happy with Retzlaff and his play. His runs helped last night as well. Maybe Bohanan should have played against Kansas or Arizona since Retzlaff was hurt. But, QBs often play hurt. We actually had a QB play every game. How often has that happened?

Another thing, playing in JC simply isn’t the same as in a P4 D1 league. He’s now technically a Sophomore and could play two more years. Knowing the offense well as well as the players for next year, I’ll take this year and be ready for a great 2025. That’s what is called a half full glass outlook.

As I remember in August - either fish or Tom Said Retzlaff won the starting position because he looked better the last week of Fall ball because HE COMMITTED VERY FEW TURNOVERS.
Well, the season was different- a turnover machine at times.
He can dazzle and then tank with mental mistakes and just be woefully off target at critical moments
I hope he can be great next year. Not holding my breath as his improvement over the season is - well- slight. Given his bowl game I would say he regressed.
If a can’t miss qb or anything close is available in portal I would grab him in a heartbeat!

Seems to me that Retzlaff is like a lightning bolt, people either liked him or didn’t (as a QB).
My main issue with the Kansas/ASU games is the coaches knowing Retzlaff was hurt played him anyways. Bronco did this with Nelson as well, which cost us games.

I am NOT SAYING if Bohanan had played, we would have won, but the percentage of success goes up versus when someone is injured.

I understand the competitive spirit Retzlaff has, that is all good, but that does not excuse ARod letting him play.

It took Sarkisian (a Juco transfer) a year to get the flow of playing in a better conference to really shine (think 1995 and then 1996).

Just some interesting stats I found between BYU and Colorado’s QB stats:
Retzlaff
Passing Rating 136.6
QB Rating 61.5

Sanders
Passing Rating 149.6
QB Ranking 76.0

And yet, Retzlaff is ranked 42nd and Saunders #1 (according to Bleacher Report)

Personally, I don’t think Retzlaff is as bad as Jim believes, nor as good as Hopper thinks.

Nice post. Agree with you. I have said clearly he has room to improve between his now sophomore year and junior year. JC and D1 are night and day.
It’s weird about Saunders in that he was like 74% completion this year but didn’t look that sharp in the bowl game. I think he will play defense in the NFL. He couldn’t even get away from our DLs.

I’ve been on board with Retzlaff since they signed him. What drives me crazy is his AD D and just bone headed passes at the worse possible times. Clean that up to get to the next level. He certainly has the option down. Some of those Colo plays, he faked or held the ball til the defense committed and just killed Colo all night long.

At this point, Retzlaff has started enough times to know better and clean things up and yet he still does the freak out when the pressure hits, and it may be on a 1st down, just eat the ball from time to time…geeeez

Can anyone name a game this year that the offense won for us? Jake is an average QB! A good QB makes solid on field decisions most of the time. He doesn’t turn the ball over much. A good QB is also an accurate passer. Jake doesn’t possess any of these attributes. His TD/interception ratio is bad. His QB rating is bad and he is consistently bailed out by our defense and special teams.

The Utah game… It was the final drive (with some questionable calls according to Utah fans) of over 80 yards that allowed the Field Goal.

Outside of that, NO! I think Special teams and the defense won most of our games.

I think there were 2 games that we needed a winning drive.
Utah
OSt.U
Jake won both those games with heroics.

I would say Jake is a good QB with bad AD D brain farts. I’m hoping he matures. Could be really good!

Didn’t get to see that game, so being old, I forgot about it! :open_mouth:

Agree - he really could be good. That’s why I said he can really dazzle - looks as good as anyone, then gets rattled/ loses his head.
I hope can show great improvement next year.

You could also argue that the ineptitude of the offense put BYU in those situations because of turnovers and total failure to sustain anything in those games. The fact that they put together a drive and score at the end is great but a little misleading. In fact I sometimes got the feeling that they purposefully played terribly just to put themselves into position to have to make some late game heroics happen. Sounds strange but no stranger than what we witnessed all season long.

He’s getting better. He’s made some great throws. He still has a lot to learn. According to the judge, he’s technically now only a sophomore. So, he’s got a lot of time to learn and get better.

No, that is strange. More conspiracy nonsense. Your mind wonders off like that. We get it. It’s amazing to still think that you believe we are playing Mountain West defenses with 2 and 3 star players. We aren’t. The players on defenses in the Big12 are much better skilled and it’s not like we’ve been a P4 team for many years. As we get more 4 and 5 star players, we will see a difference and less mistakes.

Floyd - I would say that our offense kept Utah in the game. If the offense would have performed at just an average level we wouldn’t have had to make that final drive against Utah with those questionable calls to help us.

You have a point; the Defense was not really up to par that game either (thus the close score).

you do realize that the majority of the current players on BYU team are 3-star, right?

Kalani has said multiple times on SN and other outlets that they are not going to recruit the high star players; they want to focus on the ones that A) want to come to BYU and B) develop them into great players. Much like Lavell did in his day.
