32 Utah Free Throws to 10 by BYU

What’s wrong with this picture? Even with that, we should have won. Missing 3 front ends did us in, Knell. We didn’t have something better at the end after the missed free throw? So many missed opportunities and bad defense at critical points.

Although the game went into overtime, I would consider this another bad loss for BYU. How can a team with so much talent blow so many chances ? This team just has no chemistry and they don’t play well together at all. They kept doing the same things over and over… too predictable, too many missed free throws, too many choke jobs to win a very winnable game.

Is Knell a freshman?

What is Knells 3 pt percentage for the year and just for big12 games? I bet not 44+%!
How does keep fooling coaches? First Pope now Young. Did he go on a mission to Haiti or Louisiana and pick up some boo-doo skills?

I am beginning to wonder if Young can coach. He can recruit like nobody’s business but no road wins and losses in all the close games. Not good. He has a team that just can’t make plays to close out games.

I know they are college level players but when it comes down to winning a game they play like high school players. So many missed opportunities. Knell could have put BYU in a good spot to win the game and his free throw attempt was not even close. Erickson shot an air ball free throw but he made the other three attempts in critical times. Demin’s 3 shot didn’t even hit the rim. They let the guy for Utah score layups and dunks all night.

I am wondering about Young’s ability to get this team on the same page. This isn’t the NBA and BYU has nobody who can isolate and get a good shot and more importantly, hit that shot most of the time. Too much of the same thing. The offense is boring and watching the team play is boring as well. Lucky if Dybantsa keeps his commitment. I guess he is one and done anyway so it probably doesn’t matter. Is Demin really a lottery pick? If so then I am not understanding what it takes because he just isn’t there yet IMO. The guy from Duke is WAY ahead in that department.

Well, I’m not really seeing the idea he can’t coach or the team isn’t playing together. The reason for the loss is poor shooting and especially free throw shooting. Oh, and 32 free throw attempts by Utah. Usually you would have some big conspiracy going

This is not a cohesive unit.

32 free throw attempts vs 10 is ridiculous. I am done trying to argue that BYU does go to the basket and draws contact that could warrant a whistle and simply does not get that call. It happened a few times vs Utah but I don’t talk about it anymore because you say otherwise. So if you don’t like the free throw disparity, don’t just point it out, come up with some ideas or reasons why you think it happened.

I will go so far as to say in some instances the officials are trying to prove that they can make calls against a professional level coach who is bringing in big recruits and not give him any calls. I see Young trying to talk to officials about stuff but I don’t see the officials responding to a thing he says… as if to say “yeah, you think you’re all mr. basketball expert. We’ll show you”.

There I said it. Can you come up with something better to explain it?

I have plenty of times. How a player attacks the basket makes the difference. If a player attempts to avoid the contact it is viewed as weak by the officials and not called as much as when a player doesn’t avoid it. Even jumps into the contact is viewed as a strong move and called more often. A big reason for the discrepancy against Utah. Do I agree? Not all the time. I don’t think the way our players approach this should be called. Should every time Utah stayed strong or moved towards the contact be called? No. I think unless the contact is too much and we are simple sliding with the player, stop always calling that. I don’t agree with that call most of the time.

That was about as clear as mud…

Thanks?

Sorry you aren’t as astute of a basketball expert as I was thinking. It was perfectly clear and we both know it. I commented in the games before.

for the year 42% which obviously puts him among the best in the nation.
for B12 36% still far from bad.
He hasn’t shot enough in conference to rank but would be ranked near the top if he was.

Saunders is ranked as the number 1 three point shooter in conference season.

I can see of difference in attempts simply based on the fact that BYU likes to launch the 3 pointers at a high rate. They currently rank 2nd in the nation for three-pointers made per game

That big of a difference of FT’s (22 attempts) is still suspect to me. I could see maybe 10 or so, but not 22.

BYU shot 30 and Utah shot 23, not a huge difference. They were both at 26% for the game. BYU was only 4-10 ft and Utah was 17-32. Neither very impressive. BYU had 50% more fouls called against them, 26-17 for Utah. Home court advantage I guess. The free throw disparity is the officials letting KY know he isn’t going to get any special treatment.

Not as bad as I thought - but given his skill liabilities it needs to improve.
I will say this, this year his mediocre is right there with the rest of the players on the team so can’t dog on him specifically so much. Last year? Big liability

BYU shot 30 what? They shot 32 free throws and BYU shot 10. Where did you get 30 and 23 from?

Use some reasonable deduction. I was talking about three pointers. That might be a conclusion you could draw, especially since I mentioned the number of free throws in that same post. Ugghh… it doesn’t have to be spelled out in simple terms does it? I was responding to Floyd and he mentioned that BYU typically shoots three popinters at a high rate, second in the nation.

It’s just some simple reading comprehension. I then went on to show the free throw comparison where BYU shot less than 50% and Utah was barely over 50%. However, because of the high number of free throws Utah was given, they outscored BYU from the line by 13 points. That was a significant difference maker in the final score of the game.

Why are you talking about 3 pointers in a thread about free throws? Changing the subject. Try to keep on topic.

How about this explanation for the FT discrepancy (despite BYU out scoring Utah in the paint, meaning BYU was at least equal in aggressively drawing contact on shot attempts): : Tony Padilla was the official. Padilla is a terrible official, known in the basketball world as a ref who simply makes up calls, and loves being the big man on campus, and thus pretty much is universally hated, because nobody wants the refs to suck. I could point out 4 key calls late in the game that were blown—all EASY and OBVIOUS to any official—and all went against BYU.

But BYU didn’t lose because of Tony Padilla, although he did his best to make sure of it.

BYU lost because our offense SUCKS and our supposed “shot doctor” choked, and our supposed lottery pick had over 5 seconds to create a game winning shot yet didn’t even LOOK to pass and instead threw up a hopeless 3 that wasn’t even close. Saunders looks like an all conference player but overall this offense is just cringeworthy to watch.

I heard others say Demin should have been able to get to the basket in 5.3 seconds. He isn’t quick enough to do that with defenders on him. I agree a play should have been run to pass it up faster. My preference would to get it to Baker rather than Hall or Saunders. Baker has a really nice floater in the lane. Hall has made some game winners.

Your last statement is weird. An all conference player is cringeworthy? Please explain. Right now, I can see Ainge looking at him as someone who could play for the Jazz.

Ignore h that he can’t read. His uncontrollable desire to argue overrides his reading skills.
