Here is info to back up Jim’s assertion. GU has 11 players who are averaging 8 or more minutes a game. BYU has 8 players in the same boat. However, 2 of BYU’s players are Bryant and Davis, who haven’t played in Lots of games. So, GU has 5 more players getting 8 min a game (or more) than does BYU. That is a lot of game experience to rely on and give confidence to players and their coaches when the game is on the line. Duke, Kent, UCLA, Xavier, UNC, UVA, and the list goes on…All have decided to spread the minutes around more than Dave Rose. Do you think if Frank Jackson was in BYU blue this year he would average 25- 30 min a game? Who would you put on the bench if Frank was at BYU?

You are proving my point hopper. Davis and Bryant are 2 of those players averaging 8 minutes or more. They aren’t playing and haven’t been for awhile. So you are correct, other players should be getting their time… Instead of having more players average more time… We still have less than GU… And others. It is already apparent that you don’t see the value of a deep bench and neither does Rose. You are in good company. We will watch the close games against good teams the remainder of the year to see which philosophy is correct.

We are deep: Center: Mika, Ayers, Shaw, Kafusi
Forwards: Childs, (Did have Davis), Shaw and Mika can play 4 man.

Agreed. Shaw sometimes does well. But they would be better as 4’s. With Kaufusi back, he may be able to spot Mika a lot better. Dastrup lately when he’s in looks slow. My point is we are much deeper than last year at all positions. Losing Davis has hurt. He was scoring much better and he can play defense. So, we have 8 players that will get 25-30 minutes a game. A couple others may get 10 minutes or more.

Only in what we observe and understand. Like I’ve said a few times, it is nice to have someone else around who gets it. I really hope BYU comes around and does well the rest of the way, but I’m not holding my breath.
I am troubled by how sure so many BYU fans are that the Cougars will beat Santa Clara easily. I would say odds are that they do and they win the game handily, but the Broncos just beat Valpo on their home floor, something BYU couldn’t do on a neutral court… and it’s like nobody thinks anything of it. Where is the respect for ones’ opponent? Where is the humility?
Apparently those are hard to come by for BYU and their fans… how quick they are to forget the UVU thing. A couple quick fouls on Mika or a cold shooting night from Haws or Emery and it could mean trouble as nobody else is prepared to fill in the gaps at this point.
We should never take an opponent lightly. I think that it looks like our guards are shooting better and the defense is much better since Valpo. Also, Childs is much better too. Hopefully coach is ready to coach great!
It was the guys who do the BYU sports nation and the other football analysts like Fowler, Wrubell and the recent younger guys.

I just think it is a dangerous position to put yourself in and I hope Rose has the team ready for every game because anyone in the wcc could surprise BYU… just like last year.
Herb Sendek is a quality coach who will raise the quality of WCC coaching. Especially given the extra money they are putting into their athletic program.
That said; he has his team improving impressively and they don’t play BYU’s game the way the past coach did. I’d be surprised if it isn’t a single digit game most of the way.
You make some good points as usual, Jim, as does THawk. I don’t agree with his assessment of Beo’s talent, but he his young and may prove to be a future star. I was a big fan of FB4, which apparently Rose wasn’t, but he is probably in a better situation for himself now. Santa Clara will give us some insight as to where BYU is right now and how they will fare in league play. I expect BYU to win, but the real test for a young team will be on the road. I don’t expect anything to be easy for this team, this year and predict 9 losses on the year and an NIT berth. Typically BYU fans are optimistic so a little pessimism might bring them back to reality. Rose won’t being going anywhere else unless he chooses to, so the face of BYU basketball is unlikely to change much.
So any prediction other than BYU going undefeated is being pessimistic?

Looks a bit optimistic to me: I’d say 2 others for a total of 6. And I just checked KenPom and he predicts 6, which is the worst Rose’s teams have ever done in WCC play. They had 6 in 2013 too and finished 3rd and played NIT.
At this point matching the 2013 team seems reasonable up to the post season. Their talent level combined with experience may get them to an NIT title game though…

Yes in the scope of BYU Fandom. But we don’t live our lives like they will be exterminated by a nuclear disaster-so optimism is OK just as is reality or “pessimism.” I’m saying 5 conference losses, excluding the tourney. Put your money where your mouth is:).
