BYU vs. LMU decapitations, etc

TL/DR: To win the conference, we must play team ball - Balance the minutes and spread the shots around.

Fair assessment.

Unfortunately, you might be right. 0-4 against st zags bites. Defendable but still. The Alabama loss is defendable but they’re 17-12 and 7th in SEC. UT Arlington is 18-12 and 4th in the sunbelt. Pacific and LMU have losing records. USD is 18-12 as well I think.

Best win is definitely Utah (18-10). Neutral site, too. But still, Utah isn’t exactly a phenom. Their best win is against ASU, who I believe is now 9th in the PAC12 and 19-9.

Eli, Yo, TJ, Shire, Cannon, Bergerson, Zach, Dastrup, Nixon, Luke. Some of these guys will get cut from a tourney lineup but yes they have depth.

Rose defaults to letting his guys play hero ball. I’d love to hear him talk about it because I want to understand why. Eli is a great player but if he shoots 18 times against heavy defense contesting the shot it’s a bad deal for us. Eli only needs a little space to put up a three but still, I’d rather move the ball and get nixon an easy lay up or put cannon in the corner with the catch.

To answer my own question from above, maybe rose just gets nervous with his bench and wants to put all his faith in his stars instead of on the system or the team. It would explain why he’s never protected his stars from excessive minutes often plays them to the last minute in a 20 point lead game. It would also explain why he is hesitant to make changes in tactics when the other team makes a run. The answer to Rose must always feel like handing Eli the ball and tell him to be Jimmer. And look at it from Rose’s perspective. He knows that he can recruit and practice well enough to be able to have a couple of those guys to play hero ball and he can get 22 to 25 wins that way. And I’m pretty sure that’s also his bet for how he’s going to win a tourney eventually.

I think the changes he made this year run counter to what I just laid out, but then when things got rough, he gave up on a lot of what they did and defaulted to his comfort zone. I hope he stays the course next year and finds tweaks to make it work. I’ve said before we might need some athletic 3 and D players to do it. I would give a lot to see a lineup with Eli, Bergerson, Haws, Dastrup and a Legit 3 and D guy at 6 6.

Totally agree with you. I agree with the rest of your post as well, but it is rare that I don’t agree with what you write.

Bingo

headed to a closed practice on Wed… My buddy, the coach, will be saying, “Bailey, keep your mouth shut, we are observers”. I will be saying, “Coach, if they ask your opinion, point out that our studs get too many minutes and what about Dastrup?”.

Rose did make a big change this year by letting Shroyer do most of the coaching. Turns out our big problem is 1 just plain getting out coached and 2 lack of bench development.

We will see

And here is some more :birthday:!!!

At this point, the line up will be Childs, Nixon, Haws, Bryant and Hardnett.
First off the bench will be Dastrup, Cannon and Seljass. Luke has slipped and the others aren’t ready for post season play. Now, Rose may put Luke in but it’s one and done.

LOL! good one hopper…

The only time Dastrup is “first” off the bench or even off the bench is when he stands up to swing a towel or cheer his teammates on.

Like I said, Rose will mix things up for the tournament. He might even start him.

Why? If the coach truly “wants to win” like you have been saying all year, why would he not go with what he has been doing all season “to win”? It is totally contradictory to what you said and what he has been doing all season. I don’t understand why he would do that now.

This is just my reading of the body language so take it with giant grains of salt…but I think Rose has felt exasperated and desperate lately. Grasping for an answer. Who knows…maybe he surprises us. He specifically said he would pull a few wrinkles. I have no idea what that means. Guesses (I’m not saying I agree or disagree with any of them):

  • Play up tempo
  • Bench zach in favor of X
  • Put Haws at the point…
  • Screen away to get Hardnet/haws flashing to the paint
  • Down screen for Nixon to pop up to the perimeter with yo then replacing in the paint and Eli cutting
  • Double screen for Haws to the wing
  • Post back screens for the bigs
  • Try to isolate Eli on a big have him give up the ball then make the big chase him or hand him off and pass the ball back in the weak spot.
  • Play a larger lineup with Eli, Tj (or berg), Yo, Nixon, dastrup (I can dream)

hahaha, now we are all dreaming. Rose is a creature of habit so don’t expect anything more than a tweak

His concern right now is getting Eli going. These past 2 game Eli could not get his mojo going. He had open looks in the SD game, they just did not fall.

I like Hardnett driving but he has this thing of stepping out of bounds before the pass out to the wing. Haws by far is the best drive and dish guy we have.

I would only put Seljaas in if we have a mismatch. As for Dastrup…FOGETABOUDIT…He is not going to be a bench warmer to big minutes this year. that thing sailed long after the UTAH game.

I think you are spot on. They already have these plays. I think the different lineup or putting players in different positions makes the most sense for the wrinkles. Hardnett showed he can shoot and at the 3 on offense he can drive quickly and create confusion for the defense. And Eli needs to post up the smaller guards more often.

I admit that starting Dastrup would be difficult for Rose to change at this point. But, at this point, what does he have to lose?
If Rose is searching for an answer and is reading our posts :no_mouth: a wrinkle might include a full court press to start the game and several times throughout the game.
If someone is not working hard, even at the beginning, he will pull them quickly. Watch for that.

I know and we’ve seen them, it’s just not as often. [quote=“fish, post:90, topic:7845”]

Hope is a good thing…maybe the best thing

Yeah you’re right. I’m guessing he’ll change how he gets Eli the ball.

What he has been losing throughout the season… games to inferior teams and wcc dregs.

That would be a disaster for BYU. I can just see Nixon, Seljaas and Haws trying to implement a full court press. :fearful:

Unless their name is Childs, Bryant or Haws, then it doesn’t matter.

I think BYU could press with a lineup of Haws, Hardnett, Cannon, Bryant, and Childs. Any other combination would be a disaster. Haws is quick enough to use on a press. Rose has never used a press to the best of my knowledge. It could work on a limited basis given the right match ups.

Sure would be nice to have Chatman. (5/10 from three by the way) This was right up his alley. Whatever

I could see running it occasionally and as a surprise, otherwise, we would get gassed.

Cannon stops Bergeson from getting time. My opinion.

Love Cannon but Bergeson is the future, that is all

Cannon is the Tanner Mangum of the basketball team. He came in and hit nothing but net on his first two 3 pointers and then faded from there…
