BYU vs. San Diego round 3

No he doesn’t. He gets burned regularly. He doesn’t help that much. He just runs around and gets lucky when he happens to be in position. Stop saying he plays good defense to compensate for his lack of offense. He is a robot… no understanding of the game, does the same moves over and over on offense and defense and is predictable.

I think it depends on what we’re talking about. I’ve never been a huge fan of him defending on the ball. He fouls a lot. But what he excels at is controlling position before the ball gets to him. He does a good job of not letting someone push him around and keeping an eye on his guy to avoid a cut. There are other aspects I like about his defense. He seems to be the best defensive talker and captain and coordinates well. He usually boxes out very well unlike many other players who stand and look for the ball.

That said, I’m not sure it makes up for his lack of offensive punch, his admittedly bad on ball defense and fouling, and what he does to the geometry of the court.

Let Luke waive the towel on the bench for a while.

LOL!!! No, he’s in the right place to grab rebounds and doing other things because he understands the defense. Something apparently you don’t understand. “Lucky”
:joy::joy::joy:

LOL! yourself. If he is in the right place to grab rebounds why doesn’t he get many during the time he is in there? Serious question there. Worthington doesn’t get squat rebounds. Also, what other “things” is he doing? He understands what defense? That is another serious question. You need to rethink your position, which you try to use to justify his playing time.

I look at the BIG picture.

So, just for fun can you, without looking it up, explain to the rest of us what a plus/minus ratio is for a player? Serious question because I don’t think you know.

The problem here is that you are still trying to see the game like it was played 30 years ago when the only stats they kept were points, rebounds and assists. There is so much more going on out there and I just don’t think you see it.

I saw Tilly drive the lane last night and Haws reached his hand in there and knocked the ball away. Worthington was right there to get it but he froze and then let Tilly go right past him for a layup. That is what I would expect from a robot who “knows the defense” but doesn’t know how to play basketball. So while he is “in position”, he doesn’t really know what to do about it. No instincts, no feel for the game and no upside… but he tries really hard and that is what Rose rewards.

On the other hand Dastrup actually does something when he gets in the game. The team is better overall, things pick up, the other team has to defend him, etc.

Absolutely the biggest mistake of Rose’s illustrious career at BYU was to sit Dastrup and give all the minutes to Luke. I’m not sure why our coaches think their job is a church calling or they are mission presidents that reward effort instead of developing talent. It is a major reason why BYU never gets to where they could be.

Oh wow! One play from Worthington. What about the other 10 good plays I saw him do? You only pick the one and the fact is Tilley was just better.

No, the above 1 to 10 ratio proves you look at the small picture

Here we go with well, 30 years ago…blah, blah, blah… coaching hasn’t changed. Creative shots haven’t really changed. The lob shot is just a version of Gail Goodrich alley oop shot. Cousey did it. Man to man and zone hasn’t changed. Plays really haven’t changed. The only real change is bigs stepping out shooting long balls because of the 3 point shot. Chamberlain used to beat West and Goodrich in horse with 3 point distant shots. Read their books and others.
Are players over all more athletic? When it comes to jumping and quickness, players who are black seem to show this and there are more in the league. But, what about Magic’s time? Come on. Stop with the I used to walk a mile to school in the snow stuff. Come to think of it, first grade I did walk to school in the snow.

You spent too much time outside in the snow and cold… it did something to you when you were little. The game is way different than it was 30 years ago. The players are way more athletic overall but I don’t think they are any more talented and skilled.

It is a lot different than it used to be, even though I loved watching the Lakers of the 80’s. Showtime with Magic was the best.

Not really. There were plenty of athletic players. Dr. J. And many others…
