Ive got to see a few practices before I can say for sure.
KY comes from NBA, will play the NBA game of bringing the ball up, wipe (pic) off to the other team’s weakest defender, Drive to dish to a wide open shooter or to the hoop. I see a whole lotta zone defenses facing BYU…hahahahahhaaaaaaaa…You can’t hide everyone!

BYU will be a nightmare to defend.

BYU will be a nightmare to attack as well. Boskovic is also a rim protector as a big.
If Baker is healthy, under control, he’s a nightmare to defend.
You are putting Knell into the mix after all the negative things you and others have said about him?
Can Foos get some playing time? Hope he’s developed more of his game.

Yeah, knell was a little curious by fish
If knell gets more than 5 minutes a game should mean a lot of BYU blowouts

Oh you guys.
I have always said that knell could play as long as you can hide him on defense and now we have a team where you can hide him on defense we can put so much pressure at the rim that teams have to overload to protect which leaves a guy right knell wide open for three.

KY could also just choose to use him very little because he has so many better players

As the coach, what would you do?

I like your last sentence best.
If he could hit 44+% of open threes he would be worth hiding for a portion of the game

headed to a practice this week

Got in a practice. surprised with several players. Not at all surprised at the stars.

curious if you are free to tell us more?

I heard there are several players “dinged” up, including Pay, Martin, Moe and Taggert were all injured.

Did you see any of them practicing?

Seems unlikely they would be on the basketball court if they’re too injured to play football.

 I was going to be nice and not say anything for a change.

Sorry, Misread the topic…

Clearly…but both are legit questions.
Better than saying you’re friends with shooters!

You were “nice” but you couldn’t help saying something… that is ALWAYS the issue and most of the time it isn’t that nice.

talking BBall here. I too would be super excited to talk football after this start, hahahaaha,

Soooooo heres the BBall report:

Egor Demin had a sore hip so he just did strengthening drills and shooting by himself with trainers. Talking to Coach young, he is a game changer because of his ball handling at 6’8. As all of you know, he is a great kid, loves BYU and the fan base.

Hall, First thing out of NBA Coach Hecker’s mouth…“who’s that guy” looking at Hall. He is the undisputed leader of BYU basketball. He has been in the weight room, chiseled. complete confidence. He is to BYU what Alex Barcello was in 2020.

Kenon Catchings: Best shooter in the gym by far. rail thin, very young but he reminds me of NBA’s Brandon Ingram in every way. Looong, can’t block his shot, great basketball moves, can get his shot on a tight clock but a true Fr. and more apt to shoot then pass.

Richie Saunders: Explosive, Charlie hustle, but this year, he will blow by you and dunk on anyone. Like Hall, he has upped his game to another level.

Keba: This dude! Looks like a solid muscle, Stewart tried dunking on a breakaway, Keba about blew up the ball on a block…and Stewart was a foot above the rim on his dunk.

Foos: As good as Keba is going to be…Foos can get low and back you in for a 2’ hook, can’t be blocked. We are solid at Center. With these two 250 plus centers, Gonna be lot’s of Offensive boards. Keba is a dunk every time, Foos is money in close.

Brody Kozlowski: Big body, built like a Strong forward. has a good outside shot. going to be great at BYU but there’s no way he can get time with all these big shooters that have 3 year’s experience ahead of him.

Dawson Baker: Another rock solid player. can drive and get his shot. He will punish you with his elbow first jump shot right up your mug shot. great bball skills. Looks like a starter to me at the 3.

Mihailo Bacovic, the 6’10 Serbian has just signed at BYU, for some reason is not showing up on the roster but he was there, very athletic and a great outside shooter and at 22, just starting the college career. He had tested the NBA draft out of the Euro league. Along with Egor, he has 3 years of professional experience. at 6’10, he should be a lock at the 4.

Two of the guys that impressed me:
Elijah Crawford, Just as I mentioned Brody Koz, Crawford could be fighting for time in a loaded team and veteran guards but this kid breathes confidence and is fearless. As a true point guard, Crawford has a big time future.

Mawot Mag, the grad out of Rutgers. This is the lock down defender that had been rumored to be shot challenged. Welp, he has been working on shooting and was hitting everything in practice. Plays the 3 or 4.

About Kevin Young
He breaks the guys into groups of 3 on 3 and works on both Defense, especially his philosophy of the “Slide and cover” the next guy if pics are involved, rather than trying to fight through a pic.

2 same can be said about Offense, again, 3 on 3, they work on driving, using pics and kick outs (the Gonzaga offense). Coaches like Burgess and Lineham are running these units. Coach Lineham and Dunson from Stanford actually will play with the guys, Coach Will Voiyt and Tim Fanning are an extension of KY,

after about an hour of rotating 3 on 3s, they do half court 5 on 5 with referees. 1st team to 15 stays on the court and takes on the next 5, just like pick up games. Young will stop at any time to instruct where they messed up on either side of the ball.

Everyone is involved, a lot of smiles along with intensity.

Having gobs of talent and winning championships are two different things, just ask Kentucky.
Just remember that BYU’s core of Hall, Saunders, Foos, Knell, Baker. Stewart could place middle of the pack in the big 16 by themselves. and we added 3 NBA talents as well as veterans Keba and Mag.

My 5 later, who would you choose?

And you don’t?

Thanks for the information. It’s interesting how over time how on ball defense has changed when it comes to handling picks. Frank Arnold was a master at teaching the slide through. Danny Ainge was won of the best at it.

Basketball is a long season with games on Saturday then Tuesday. With a full talented roster, we should have a great group ready for Tuesdays prepping for the game after Saturday. Like Foos Starts on Saturday and Keba on Tuesday?Do you see a possibility of this?

Doesn’t work like that. You have your starters, then combos that work best together.
Keba will be the starter, Foos will start if Keba can’t. We have guys that have played with Foos for 2 years now, no brainer to have R Saunders, hill or stewart play with Foos.

KY: “You get a pretty clear subbing pattern and that’s what I was heavily involved with in the NBA world, so I felt really comfortable there. Obviously this is a totally different thing in terms of time outs, halves and so fourth. So we’re trying to map out what our substitution pattern will look like. Because for me, it’s not just about the starting five but it’s what combinations of guys are playing, who pairs well with who.”

Young said he and his coaching staff will eventually come up with a manageable plan.

“I’m not a fan of guys playing super short stints,” he said. “I think guys need to get longer stints to get in a rhythm. There’s only so many minutes to be had. It shows up in their competitiveness, which they’ve all been in camp. That stuff will, over time, iron itself out.”

Who would be your starting 5?
