BYU defense gives up an average of 80 yards rushing a game. That is a good defense.
Against CC they gave up over 300 yards rushing. That is a bad defense, especially when they saw it all in the first half and did NOTHING to counter it in the second half.
That is your ballgame right there. The biggest reason BYU lost was the defense giving up over 300 yards rushing. Everything else that contributed to the loss points back at that most glaring stat.
You too? So what about the 300 yards. They gave up only 85 yards through the air. But, that isnāt the debate. The debate is was the loss because of bad offense and defense EQUALLY. Or was the loss mainly on the offense or the defense. Both had problems. I have no problem with that. My opinion and the statistics I laid out say the offense did not produce more than the defense problems. 3 points in the 2nd half. Come on.
The line on the BYU-SDSU game started at -14, is now up to -18
A lot of unhappy cougs out there. BYU has out performed 7 of the 10 games.
BYU 31-17 SDSU
āThatās not what you want as a defense, especially as a defensive lineman,ā El-Bakri said. āWe want to stay on our side of the chains. We never made them uncomfortable. We never got them off schedule. Itās not a situation you want to be in and was definitely a little bit frustrating, especially from a defensive line standpoint.ā
Cougar senior linebacker Isaiah Kaufusi said itās tough to be on the field during those long possessions and that the defense is working to be more efficient.
āA lot of it has been because of the third downs,ā Kaufusi said. āWe get them to third-and-short or third-and-medium, and then we just have to execute better to get off the field. There have been times where we kind of bail them out with the penalty or something just really silly, one guy not doing his responsibility. Weāve got to get off the field on those third downs and I think thatās the key is to step up. Weāve kind of changed our attitude this week to address that.ā

Code word: Coaches did not call plays we as players need to put pressure on a FRESHMAN QB!!!
We did not do a D__M thing to challenge them.
We did not change up things,
did not load the line to force them to pass more,
did did not act on their tendencies,
Why would you view game film if you are just going to set there and let a bully hit you in the face for 4 hours.
SDSUās offense is nowhere compared with CC. Had we shifted the defense more against the run, they would have lit up the passing. Their QB is excellent. No comparison with SDSU.
SDSU is not an option team as far as I know but I assume they will try to run the football and control the clock. They average over 200 yards per game running so they are a good running team. They play solid defense and that has been their trademark for a number of years now. If you look at their passing stats they donāt scare you at all throwing the ball so BYU had better game plan to shut down the run and take their chances with the SDSU passing game. It looks like they have played 3 different quarterbacks this year and none of them have passing stats that would impress anybody. If BYU loses this one shame on them because SDSU looks like a team with a vanilla offense that will try to keep the game close and play solid defense.
Their return game is outstanding. They ran back a punt 90 yards and a kickoff 93 yards for touchdowns against Colorado St. Colorado St. is not very good and looking at the game stats against SDSU they actually outgained them 265-247 so San Diego St. is not going to scare anybody with their offense. They did control the clock for for 35 minutes and CSU had 2 turnovers and SDSU none. Take away the two special teams touchdowns and the turnovers and SDSU was played to a standstill by a weak CSU team on their home turf.
SDSU will try to control the clock, and play mistake free football and hope BYU turns the ball over. Just looking at their stats and the games they have played they appear to be a team that will be hard to blow out and probably wonāt beat itself but not a team whose offense is going to scare anybody.
If BYU loses it will probably be another snooze fest like the one last year where BYU turns the ball over, commits penalties and gives up just enough plays on defense to lose the game. I think offensively BYU has to be patient because I donāt think SDSU is going to give up a lot of big plays.
All gets back to the OL-protect and push SDSU defense off the line. Everything else is in place for the offense. The defense has always been the question mark. I donāt know how many times I watched opposing qbās complete passes against an 8 man drop-in this game the linebackers will be critical in chasing down the running backs and the short dump offs. Interesting game with no excuses about no game preparation and traveling
I remember sitting in a few games during a snowy day. My wife would always leave early. I also remember playing some intermeural games in some deep snow. That was fun
I never forgotten that one play near the end of the game (1980 or 81), RB Lakie Heimulie (so?) ran some 90 yards touchdown against Utah during heavy snowstorm was fun to watch where I sat north end zone behind those posts as he was heading South in the middle of the field
I would get in the free student ticket line early. The first tickets were in the lower level. Then Iād come back later when they were handing out the upper deck and trade the lower level tickets in. Weād always be between the 20-30 yard lines half way up. Perfect to see the entire game. The team would stand all game long in the way if sitting in the lower level.
So glad CC proved to everyone what a great team they are by thrashing Troy, the same team BYU beat 48-7. Yeah, that Troy team that also has a losing record. So glad that BYU didnāt show up against CC two weeks ago by sleepwalking through their most important game in the past 10+ yearsā¦
Feels so good to be a BYU fan and know that they will do something like that every time a great opportunity presents itself⦠every time.
Oh yeah, back to that thrashing that CC put on Troy today⦠final score was 42-38 on a td pass with 35 seconds left in the game. Wow, that Coastal Carolina team is so good, they put a beat down on Troy.
They are 10-0. Florida lost to LSU. I scan understand a letdown after their big win last week. I see BYUās defense hasnāt gotten any better. Oh, I have a an in-game thread going. Comment there
So Florida loses to LSU but what difference does it really make? None. They already had one loss. So for discussion sake letās say BYU was still undefeated. Would they have passed Florida in the rankings after this game? I say no because the CFP committee would use the excuse of them having lost a close game to last years national champion.
These are the arguments and justifications that will continue going forward. Just like many of the football experts and educated analysts have stated, no team from outside a P5 conference will ever be invited to the CFP for the national championship. It hasnāt happened yet and there is no evidence that it will change in the future. In fact, the evidence is compelling to the contrary.
