ESPN FPI predicts BYU to have a sub 500 season

ESPN FPI Predicts Every Game on the 2024 BYU Football Schedule (msn.com)

It is sooooooo dismal that BYU is predicted to win, wait for it, exactly 3 games this season.
So Georgia
@ Wy
Houston

This is crazy talk!! ESPN has ranked SMU as our toughest game of the season with a 19.7% BYU chance to win, higher than @ Utah at (24%). I call BS!

BYU does not lose many in Lavel Stadium so let me see…
So Ill, win, 90% per ESPN, BYU win
Sept 21, K St, I’m gonna say, holy smokes, K St has a freakin Oline!..Loss
Oct 12, Arizona, 2 week bye, BYU for the win.
Oct 18 Ok St, short prep week, loss
Nov 16, Kansas, call me crazy, BYU win
Nov 30, Houston, BYU win
4 home wins

Road games, ESPN has BYU losing every game but @ Wy
Sept 14, @ Wy, Win
Sept 6, @ SMU, BYU loss
Sept 28, @ Baylor, lose
Oct 26, @ UCF, BYU gets killed
Nov 9, @ Utah, Killed again
Nov 23, @ Az St, BYU win

2 road wins, 4 home wins= Bowl game

What say you

I can’t say much because honestly I have no idea how they will do this season. If I base this season on what I saw at the end of last season I don’t hold out much hope. I’m trying to forget what happened but we have the basic same offensive coaching staff in place, minus a couple of good coaches who were scapegoated or something, and not much looks like it will change.

I want to be optimistic but it’s really tough to do after last year’s end of season disaster.

The players are better and healthy. According to the players, the coaches are doing a much better job. We are deeper as well in case of injury. So, the question I have is how have the other teams changed? If they are just as good, that helps us.

Honestly trying to decide whether I care. I would LOVE it if BYU defies expectations this season, goes 10-2 and beats Utah. However, I won’t be surprised if BYU wins 3-5 games, gets drilled by Utah, and KS keeps telling me he has to watch film to know what went wrong. KS has bludgeoned me into submission. It’s not fun to be one of the worst teams in the league (see 2023). It’s not fun to try to convince ourselves that once great BYU MIGHT BARELY squeak out 6 wins to play in the worst bowl game in front of a half empty stadium. It’s not fun to have the national media believe that BYU is Vanderbilt—a nice school full of smart kids but not a threat in football. KS has redefined mediocrity and it’s not fun.

Counting the days until basketball season.

I can’t put much stock in what they say because they are going to say everything is fine even if it isn’t, because they have to sell tickets. this is still a business after all.

so what do we have to go on? short clips, articles about practice and reading between the lines when coaches and players speak. none of these gives us a true picture. So all I have is what happened in the past.

from what I saw last year I say we win 5.

Conner Pay has been open since last year. What are you talking about? That’s right, you don’t watch BYUSN.

No way Connor Pay has been speaking and you can only hear him on BYUSN. Wow I should only watch BYUSN from now, because where else am I going to get my BYU sports info.

your the best thanks Grasshopper

ESPN BPI says 3 wins…everyone else says 4.2 wins

YOu would be amazed at how many BYU fans are saying the very same things

If we are poor at Oline/QB play, not even that, sad

feels like Hill and a new OC in our near future

Looks like ESPN is wrong unless BYU loses the rest of their games including their bowl game.

yup, I’ve watched a lot of games, BYU’s Defense is top 10 nationally. We were perfect in the red zone until that first 4 and out today…I’d say BYU is a contender

Big 12 Week Eight Winners: Conference Chaos Ahead? (msn.com)

AP Top 25: 3 teams ranked way too high, 3 teams ranked way too low entering Week 9

No. 11 is way too high for the BYU Cougars

I hope this does not come across as mean, but I am not ready to live in a world where BYU is a top-10 team. That could happen after this weekend, and I am doing my best to get ready for it. Their wins are getting more and more impressive by the week, but nearly getting upset at home vs. a bad Oklahoma State team does not land well with me. It may be Mike Gundy off a bye, but that was way too close…

BYU may be good enough to win the Big 12. I would be shocked at this point if the Big 12 title bout did not feature either BYU or Iowa State. While I think the Cougars eventually get there, they do have a slew of tough road games coming up, ones where they could get got. The Cougars keep winning and keep proving me wrong. I am okay with that. I would have three teams ranked behind BYU over them.

They are not one spot worse than Iowa State, maybe not on Notre Dame, Indiana or Texas A&M’s level.

I question a couple above them. I also think 7-0 in a P-5 conference should be over 6-1 teams. Also, BYU and Georgia are the only teams in the top 20 that have wins over 2 other teams in the top 25. ISU should be tied with BYU at #10.

Rankings don’t really matter at this point. They will matter at the end of the regular season. The only focus should be the next game and being totally focused on it.

yes technically it only matters at the end, but like in a race you would rather be up with the rest of the leaders in the final stretch then in the back. If BYU wins out its better for them to keep moving up so they have a chance to make it to the playoffs. Unless you’re saying play the team not the raking I would agree with that.

I think we are on the same page on this. If we are undefeated I think we are a lock for the playoff unless we really get torched in the conference championship game. If we lose a close one and finish 12-1 I think we are in.

Being ranked high is good as long as the players don’t pay any attention to it and only focus on the opponent.

it’s not a guarantee that we will make the playoffs if we win out. ESPN and others have started to talk about how the BIG12 may be left out of the playoffs. that is why I say we need to keep moving up because if we don’t then there is a chance we don’t make it.

The reason we want to be ranked much higher now is because if we lose a gam along the way, we won’t drop down so far. If we were ranked 6th with just non-losers of a game, we lose and fall to 11 or 12. If we lose now, we drop to 17 or 18. At this point, except for Notre Dame, not one team with one loss should be ahead of a P-5 conference team with no losses. The 5 major conferences are the big boys now so treat each league as such with the same respect. That would help eliminate politics of the game.

It matters. 2 avenues:
BYU plays in the Big 12 championship with one or two loses and wins, they will be the fourth seed

BYU has zero or 2 losses, they will have to rely on how many SEC has teams ahead of BYU or any combo of the ACC getting a Clemson/Miami, Big 10 with Penn/OSU/Oregon. then there is ND and how many SEC teams sneak back in ahead of BYU. There are bunch of combos that would keep BYU out.

A zero loss or champion of the big 12, BYU would get the 4th seed

YES, but then a BSU could sneak in and take our spot if BYU were to lose the big 12 championship
